Anyone know the mileage at which to change the timing belt for a 2001 Honda Passport? Or maybe direct me to a site with the manufacture's maintainance schedule.

A week ago, the engine made a grunting, rumbling noise as it goes from 15 to 30 miles per hour and made the same rumbling noise going back down from 30 to 0 miles an hour. My first thought was a slip in the transmission. But I have been driving it for another 200 miles without any noise from the engine. Question now is it safe for me to drive from Arlington, Texas to Los Angeles, California...and back? Should I have the transmission inspected by a mechanic?

You had better hope that you don't snap the belt.
I had a MBZ 380 SL that broke the timing belt. Luckily I was at a signal and only idling at the time, but the damage was extensive. The engine kept turning and bent several valves and ruined a piston. The mechanic told me it could have been worse......(how, I don't know)
End result: $4,500.

Yes, it did have a timing chain. After it broke, and at the urging of my mechanic, I installed a DOUBLE timing chain. My odometer was over 150M at the time and I didn't take any precautions prior to it breaking.
I was lulled into complacency by the fact I owned a 1982 sedan that I had worked on. When the engine was taken apart, the valves were in perfect shape after 300,000 miles. Mercedes engines seemingly last forever.
The timing chain problem was cured a couple of years later when they went to a double chain as standard equipment.
