someone please talk me out of making a pretty heavy play on iona tonight.

i dont consider the maac to be one of my stronger conferences by any stretch, but think theres a significant underlay here. id probably be willing to lay up to 3.5 or 4.0 with these guys. saw olympic opened at pick and its gone to -1, but still think it looks almost too good to be true.

almost feel like manhattan and east tennessee are both incredibly overvalued this year. i know etsu has fallen much more in one year than manhattan has (and i know its a cross-conference comparison), but i just dont think manhattan is anything special whatsoever and theyre living off the reputation of the last few years.

iona or pass?

My computer has the line dead on so no advantage for either team. Its hard enought winning with an advantage.

i would take into consideration manhattan's mindset after losing to lowly siena last game...jaspers just mailed it in @ the pepsi, following a nice W v fairfield...hc gonzalez isn't the type to allow that twice & i really like mulligan & anderson, think i like manhattan here but will wait 'til 6:30 to wager...gl, caper

Personally I made a small play on Manhattan...they'll be up for game after loss to Siena and Iona is a Jeckyl/Hyde team...never know which one will show up...coach Ruland is on his way out for good reason...I'd play Manhattan or pass on this one...

they won IN manhattan already, why not at home as well. oh wait, the revenge angle..har-har..nah, iona for me.

this is another home-dominated series.. 9/10 home-town winners.

from the game on the 15th

NEW YORK (AP) -- Steve Burtt made two free throws on a technical foul with 36 seconds left after Manhattan called a timeout it didn't have and Iona held on for a 69-67 victory that snapped a four-game losing streak.

Greg Jenkins had 30 points for the Gaels (5-10, 1-5 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), who overcame a 13-point deficit with a 22-7 run over the final 8:19.

with all bullshit choke jobs ive endured lately, maybe passing this game would be wise. looks like iona is a team that can turn a sure loss into a win, and vice versa.

coming back from DD in manahttan late is tough to do. that shows resolve.

but then im looking at their last game vs canisius (with iona playing for a 4 gm winning streak) and the gaels pissed away a 15 point lead at home with 8:00? turned a 52-37 game into an overtime affair. then iona led by 5 with 2:30 left in the first OT....blew that.... then led by 6 in the 2nd OT with 2:20 left and blew that..... then lost in the 3rd OT. to let canisius come back on you like that 3 times in the same game is a little alarming.

like iona still, but might just pass.

for what it's worth, G, from the last game vs canisius you speak of:

Downey (canisius) hit a disputed 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds in the first overtime to tie the game at 72. Videotape, not available at courtside, clearly showed the player with both feet inside the arc.

hmm.

GMAN,
You always offer good analysis and I have enjoyed reading your posts. As to why ETSU sucks so bad this year:

They have no post presence, lost Wadud and Fields from 1 yr ago and injury to Knuckles has caused them to get manhandled on the boards all year by teams with any size at all.

beebs:

youre right about that. their inside/outside game was awesome last year. now its just tim smith trying to make everything happen. his assists to turnover ratio for the season is terrible for a PG. not sure what kind of coach bartow is either. think the players last yr made him a good coach. this year, theyre certainly hurting by losing those inside guys, esp. wadood. but they shouldnt be as bad as they are, especially in a mediocre southern conf. this yr.

going with the 1st half over 66.

kind of a play from left field, since the point of my thread was about the side in the game. but im gonna wait until halftime to see how iona is faring. the D is what scares me after a triple OT game, even if it was almost a week ago.
