Twenty points, 21 rebounds.
In the Marist College men?s basketball?s team?s first meeting this season with Siena at McCann Arena, a 79-75 late-January loss, Saints senior big man O.D. Anosike posted those gaudy numbers. As a team, Siena outscored Marist 38-28 in the paint.
In preparing for tonight?s rematch at the Times Union Center, rebounding has clearly been on Marist coach Chuck Martin?s mind.
?That?s the key. That?s as important as anything else,? Martin said. ?Rebound the ball on the defensive end and also creating our own second and third opportunities on the offensive end.?
Marist (8-20, 4-12 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) was without starting forward Jay Bowie for that first game; the junior sat out for more than a month after a late-December head injury. While Martin said his return is not the only change needed to quell Anosike, Bowie?s 8.7 points and 4.7 rebounds will lighten the defensive load on center Adam Kemp.
Siena (7-21), which, at 4-12, is tied with Marist for eighth place in the MAAC, had lost five in a row before defeating Radford 65-57 in its own BracketBusters game on Sunday.
In addition to Anosike (12.7 points, 11.6 rebounds per game), Siena boasts three others scoring at least 11 points per game ? Rakeem Brookins (11.9), Rob Poole (11.4) and Evan Hymes (11.0).
Martin said Marist is ?a different team? since the first time it met Siena. For instance, sophomore guard T.J. Curry has flourished since stepping into the starting lineup in place of senior Devin Price, who missed time with an ankle injury. Now that Price is once again healthy, Martin said he?s sticking with the sophomore.
?There?s a good chemistry going right now with T.J. in the lineup,? Martin said. ?One of the things I learned from the VMI game was it?s really nice to have Devin Price come off the bench and give you 20 points.?
In beating Virginia Military Institute 112-74 on Saturday in an ESPN BracketBusters game, Price scored 20 in 19 minutes, shooting 7 of 8 from the field. Chavaughn Lewis posted career highs of 30 points and 16 rebounds in the game, Isaiah Morton recorded 11 points and 13 assists, and Curry scored 16.
?My kids are feeling good,? Martin said. ?They played well against VMI, obviously scored the ball really well. The energy was great. A lot of enthusiasm.?
