Two plays I like in tonight's game...
Total Number of Different Players to Throw a Pitch in Game 1
10/07/03 110 Total Pitchers (Marlins/Cubs) OFF OFF Over 7.5 (-125)
20:05 ET Total Pitchers (Marlins/Cubs) OFF OFF Under 7.5 (-105)
3 units on the Over
The over is the way to go here. Both teams averaged more than 4 pitchers per game in the divisional series, and in general, situational pitching comes into play more often in the postseason. Beckett and Zambrano will work into the 6th or 7th innings, assuming both are throwing decent games. In the later innings, Baker and McKeon will hit for their pitchers and start going to the bullpen. Once the starters are out, don't expect anyone out of the pen to throw for more than one inning, instead more like 1/3 or 2/3 of an inning as the managers will bring in lefties to face righties, etc...
Josh Beckett - Total Number of Pitches Thrown - Must Start
10/07/03 120 Total Pitches OFF OFF Over 107 (-115)
20:05 ET Total Pitches OFF OFF Under 107 (-115)
3 units on the Under
Again, in the NL, the pitcher batting comes into play here. I'd look for Beckett to throw 7 innings, maybe 8 at the most. In 7 innings against San Fran last week, he threw 112 pitches (including 8 on walking Bonds)....with 32 coming in an error-filled 4th inning. In the other six innings, his pitch totals were 16, 11, 12, 13, 11, and 17. Against a free swinging team like Chicago, chances are, he will not have to work deep into the count very often, which makes the under a very nice play.
