of note for Marquette game. I'm guessing this is responsible for line move.

Wesley Matthews and Jerel McNeal continue to recover after bumping heads during practice Monday. Wesley Matthews (23) and Jerel McNeal were taken to a local hospital Monday after bumping heads in practice.

But whether they'll be in the starting lineup - or available to play at all - in the Marquette Golden Eagles' Big East opener at Providence won't be clear until the teams take the court at the Dunkin' Donuts Center at 6:30 tonight.

"It's still in a situation where they're going through the process of recovery from the mishap in practice," Crean said Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the team landed in Providence, R.I. "It's not really upgraded anymore from unknown. Possibly day-to-day but still an unknown situation at this point."

Crean would not detail the injuries to either player or the possible severity, but did shed some light on what happened during the New Year's Day workout at the Al McGuire Center.

"It was one of our progression rebounding drills," he said. "It was a 2-on-2 rebounding drill, they were on the same team and they just collided. Just a freak mishap. But it happened and we're just trying to deal with it and move forward."

Matthews and McNeal were taken to a local hospital for precautionary measures after the collision. Neither practiced Tuesday, and 15th-ranked MU (13-2) wasn't scheduled to practice again until Wednesday evening in Providence.

Crean didn't say if either player would take part.

He added that he and the rest of the Golden Eagles are prepared to play tonight without one or both players if need be.

"Absolutely. You have to do that," he said. "At the same time, when you mix teams up in practice and things of that nature throughout the year, hopefully that comes back if that is the case."

Even so, having to play without Matthews, McNeal or both would be a huge blow for the Golden Eagles.

The 6-foot-5 Matthews is third on the team in scoring at 11.5 points per game and the second-leading rebounder at 5.5. He's coming off his best game of the season, when he scored a personal-high 22 points and tied a season high with nine rebounds in MU's 69-51 victory over Savannah State on Saturday.

The 6-1 McNeal is the second-leading scorer at 14.5 points per game, second in assists (3.7) and third in rebounds (4.5). He's also the Golden Eagles' best defender, ranking second in the nation in steals with 51.

He's coming off his worst game of the season - a six-point, six-turnover performance - but still remains arguably the Golden Eagles' most indispensable player.

Crean has several options if Matthews and McNeal are unable to go.

A likely scenario could see him shifting junior Dan Fitzgerald to Matthews' spot at small forward and inserting Jamil Lott at power forward, considering the Friars' strength lies in its frontcourt with forwards Geoff McDermott and Herbert Hill, and using a backcourt of Dominic James and freshman David Cubillan.

Curry out.

providence board...

Star Guard is Out
Yes Friar fans. Sharaud Curry is expected to miss tonight's Big East opener against Marquette. But this blog item is really about the opposition. The Journal has learned that Marquette starter Jerel McNeal will also not play tonight.
Is this an even trade? No. Take Dominic James out and Curry's loss is nullified. But McNeal is a very good player, an excellent defender and perhaps Marquette's best all-round player. Will it be enough for the Friars to grab a mild upset over the nationally-ranked Golden Eagles (c'mon. It's the Warriors)? We'll see.
