Fantasy Football math exchange question....

1.) League Rule - QB receives 0.1 points for every passing yard over 200. "0.1 points for 201, and then 0.1 point for every 1 thereafter"


Conversion...

If all you can use is, "X points for each passing yard," which starts at yard 1,

then, what's the best value for X in this league..??? :shrug:

Not sure I understand what you're asking.

If your QB throws for under 200 yds, then I assume you get 0 points. If yds = passing yards, and X is your QB's passing points, then

X = 0.1 (yds - 200) if yds > 200
X = 0 if yds < 200

Not sure what you mean by best value for X. It's a linear function, so X gets bigger as yds increases. There is no max value.

Let me try again....

This is the rule in the league....

X = 0.1 (yds - 200) if yds > 200
X = 0 if yds < 200


...but this is the only formula that I can use to approximate the above rule....

X = Y (yds - infinity and beyond) if yds > 1



So, how do I estimate Y???

I don't know if there is a "right" answer, I'm just looking for a best guess if "X" and "Y" are the guesstimates in my ff projections when X is the league rule and Y is my only manner of "guessing" at X....

I'd have to see the problem but here is what I can tell from what you've said.

You have two functions: f1 is the real function and f2 is the one you can use.

For various values of yardage (think summation) you want to minimize the error where the error is the difference between f1 and f2 (f2 -f1). But you really want to minimize the square of the differences to be more precise.

The algebra gets pretty messy so I suggest you start to drink heavily.
