Columbus- Maurice Clarett might have played his last down with the Buckeyes.

Ohio State will not reinstate the sophomore running back to the football team, WJW Channel 8 reported last night.

From Our Advertiser

Reached at his home by The Plain Dealer last night, OSU Di rector of Ath letics Andy Geiger did not contradict the report.

"Anything they have is premature," said Geiger. Asked to clarify, he said: "We're not going to comment on any aspect of what we are into at this point."

Channel 8 reported that in formulating a response to NCAA allegations against Clarett, the university learned the sophomore "received extra benefits worth thousands of dollars."

OSU's response to the NCAA will say that "the university will not seek reinstatement to the football program for Clarett," WJW Columbus bureau chief John Damschroder reported.

Clarett has not played for OSU this season and is not practicing with the team pending results of investigations by the university.

In April, Clarett reported $800 cash and items worth more than $9,500 stolen from the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo he was driving.

The car and the amount of money involved caught the attention of the NCAA, which asked OSU to investigate

This is good news for Buckeye fans. This kid is nothing but a cancer to the entire University. He will not play this year due to accepting "extra benefits". The investigation into his eligibilty is still ongoing. If they find him guilty of walking out of that exam, then the possibility of bogus grades comes into play, which in turn could uncover that he was ineligible last season.

Jim Brown is trying to get him to transfer to Grambling. I see this idiot going to Youngstown myself. He's homesick and admits that he hates to fly and YSU is in his backyard. He won't be half the back at either of these schools.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Maurice Clarett was charged Tuesday with lying about items stolen from him out of a car.

Clarett

Clarett was charged with misdemeanor falsification, city attorney spokesman Scott Varner said. If convicted, Clarett would face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday that the school is ready to cut ties with the star running back.

Tressel said he does not expect Clarett to return this season to the defending national champion Buckeyes. He would recommend that Clarett be released from his scholarship if the request was made, the coach said.

Clarett has already been suspended indefinitely from the team, and in all likelihood will not play for the third-ranked Buckeyes this season. He is also being investigated by the NCAA.

Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger said Tuesday he wasn't surprised Clarett was charged.

"We expected it, not necessarily today, but we were expecting that it was going to happen," he said.

Clarett acknowledged earlier this summer that he filed an exaggerated theft report after his car was broken into in April. The car was borrowed from a local car dealer.

The NCAA started looking into the report after Clarett stated he had lost more than $10,000 in items in the theft.

Clarett set Ohio State freshman records last season with 1,237 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, including the winning score in the Buckeyes' double-overtime victory over Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.

Attorneys for Clarett did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment on the plan to file charges.
