Dave Brower way....

Dave Brower has been an avid harness racing fan since age 10 and has worked in just about every aspect of the sport in the 24 years since. A 1991 journalism graduate of St. John's University, Brower has groomed and trained horses, operated the race teletimer, been a public relations intern, morning line oddsmaker and track handicapper. He continues to provide the chartcalling for Sports Eye and currently serves as a featured host, and co-host of the nightly "Racing from the Meadowlands" television program on Fox Sports Net, including in-house duties of analysis and handicapping.

1st

David Brower's picks: 8-3-4-1

1 Lookinforasign(L) Wasn't Sears' choice tonight after the scratch and step up in class. His last effort was good, but that seems like long time ago.
2 Double R N(L) Has raced here before, but with just limited stamina. In a new barn now and last at Freehold didn't show much. A longshot for me.
3 All Hall(L) Finished up his last mile strongly. Proved the win was no fluke and might be able to handle this level. I'd still want square price to bet him.
4 Beau Willee(L) Had more pace than you think last time. Likely to be overbet a notch in this spot, but I'd still include him on the ticket. Must use.
5 Answer Me This(L) This was Sears' choice and I don't know what to do with this fella. The 50's were too much. I guess this is where he belongs.
6 Bolero Loupet(L) Loomed boldly last time, only to flatten out a touch. It's all about pace and trip with this gelding. He needs more to win this.
7 Big Production(L) Saw his win streak come to an end at the $30K level. Now, he's in for $40K after missing a few weeks. That's tough to take now.
8 Lucky Jo(L) Has disappointed a few times, but when hard used early. Might be time to take a different approach. The price should be better.
9 Hawaiian Hunk(L) One of the longshots from a brutal post. Not for me.
10 Sea Dragon(L) Might be key to the race. Post 10 gave him no shot last time. Timmy T will have to get him into the race somehow. He likely will.

2nd

David Brower's picks: 8-6-5-1

1 Dynamite Express(L) Shows an awful lot of seconds, doesn't he? With that said, maybe we should back wheel him in exacta underneath. I like it.
2 Slippery Phil(L) Jumped up and shocked us right off the claim for Mr. Longshot, Goodell. Hikes up again and this may be too much. Was it fluke?
3 Stock Market Wiz(L) Came bursting home to one of his many upset wins. Tends to do that at times, but we all have to guess. Dube off now.
4 Ithinki'msomebody(L) Dube sticks here over #3 and this gelding is more than capable with the right kind of trip. All the faves are outside. A chance.
5 Definitely Maybe(L) Won two of last three, but loses Sears tonight. Should still offer the same nice price from ideal post. Why not take back?
6 Kentucky Rebel(L) A fresh claim from Johnnie Mac here. He's done well in that category. Horse hasn't been able to win lately, but I do give chance.
7 Lombo Powershot A(L) This looks a little too tough right now. I'll pass.
8 Western Mac(L) Sears' choice over #5,9 was absolutely superb in last win. When this horse gets hot, he tends to stay hot. Clearly the one to beat.
9 D'Artagnan(L) When Sears opts off a Silva-trainee, that's not usually a good sign. This one even won for this tag two back. Has to get close enuf.
10 Kathryn Dancer A(L) Guaranteed speed coming again. Very game right now, but in battle with #8, I've got to prefer the latter right now. Tuf post.

3rd

David Brower's picks: 7-2-5-3

1 Four Starz Magic(L) Paying off nicely on that claim last month. Taking another big hike up in price, but he does have pole to keep close. Maybe.
2 Mr Romantic(L) Immediately reclaimed by Johnson and that's always a good sign. Gets Tetrick back and starts from a cozy, inside post. Usable.
3 Blissed Out(L) Can't really fault this guy right now, as every start has been a hard-fought one. Only one recent win, but hard to leave out here.
4 CR Gunsmoke(L) This is one of the longshots, but gets post relief now.
5 Raven Rocket(L) Andy's choice of three. Trying to find the right level with this guy and I do like the post and potential for smooth, rallying trip. Maybe.
6 Speed Professor(L) Drops a tick and appears to need the class relief after a good, earlier run. Let's see if he can bounce back with more now.
7 So Lucky Hanover Absolutely raging right now and very hard to go against, even in this wide open field. Beat these with something to spare.
8 Sam's Illusion(L) Not in a good spot out here, so let's rate a longshot.
9 Premier Prestige(L) Stuck with yet another tough post in this handicap. Deceptively sharp right now, but he faces tall order against likes of #7.
10 Durango Kid N(L) Where's he going from post 10? Perhaps not very far.

4th

David Brower's picks: 4-7-1

1 Noble Falcon(L) Awfully consistent of late, considering on the board finishes. With that said, don't even think of leaving him off a super ticket.
3 Boo Yah(L) Back for another go around in '08. This veteran just shows up every season and gets hot for a while. I'm going to wait a week or two.
4 Umoja N(L) I think this fella is sitting on an improved effort, but I would want a big price to try. Should get plenty of pace to rally into tonight.
5 Life Is A Cabaret(L) A mixed bag of efforts lately and Sears off again.
6 Universal Dream N(L) Taking a class drop here and he retains Sears, but this is one I might steer away from. Needs big improvement to win this.
7 Lag Putt(L) Like #4, this guy is just about ready to pop. I don't know if it's tonight, but he will race well, whatever the trip. Hopefully, a smoother one.
8 Fly Fly Buckeye(L) Tough to like a lot, considering that scratch of last month. Not the most consistent horse, but more than capable at times.
9 Armbro Acquire(L) It's all about pace and trip for this fella. He's ready now, after several starts under his belt, but Dube has to get him closer.
10 Arizona Liar(L) Moves from pole to post 10 and nothing derails a streak faster than that. Huge hike up in class too. That's too many knocks.

5th

David Brower's picks: 1-7-2-3

1 Special Report(L) As expected, took all the tote action last week and showed his true heart and grit. Has the pole here and will be forcing action.
2 Load The Dice(L) Back for another go here in '08. Back in the Rucker barn and his recent form is solid. Can't completely eliminate from cozy post.
3 Jilliby Generator(L) Didn't have any excuses against #1 last time. Regardless, this horse remains sharp and this is post relief. Sears still on.
4 Fox Valley Tribal I still remember that mile on 12/15 when he should have won. With that said, he can be used underneath, but not on top now.
5 Up Front Jerry(L) Has never shown to be a true Open caliber horse here, so I'm going to let Jerry beat me if he can. I rate him a longshot here.
6 Mypanmar(L) Not the most consistent performer, is he? Jumps up with huge miles on occasion and then has clunkers too! Hard to gauge now.
7 Casimir Camotion(L) In the midst of a nice comeback here. Raced very well last week, loaded with pace. GB aboard, so we might see some speed.
8 Rare Jewel Not in a good spot out here and he's coming off another tiring effort. I don't envision him blasting, so I will simply pass for tonight.

6th

David Brower's picks: 6-1-10-8

1 Irak Attack N(L) One-run kind of closer gets the pole here and as long as he can avoid a shuffle, he does have a square upset chance. Usable.
2 Murphy's Best(L) Not sure he's usable, especially after that scratch.
3 Clear Atomic Day N(L) This was Yannick's choice over #7. Hard to rate the 50's over at Yonkers against the 50's here. I guess we'll find out now.
4 Miracle Believer(L) Drops a tick and appears to need the relief. Should still offer a big price to all those longshot lovers. Maybe he can hit the ticket.
5 Kennans Josh(L) Found this level too much two back. I love the midpack post, but would need to see more from Josh before I could endorse in here.
6 Candy's Pool(L) Don't even think of leaving this guy out. Very consistent of late and he just grinds into the mile every time. That's a nice asset.
7 Doggone Incredible(L) Moves away from the Burke barn via claim, so I'm anxious to see if he can hold his form. Big test and a loss of Yannick.
8 Isle of Patmos(L) Banca barn got him to go and now Kesmodel takes over after the claim. His barn has been solid of late, so let's take extra look.
9 Soul Chaser(L) Absolutely flew home last week, but with that said, if you didn't have him at 8-1, why try him now at lesser odds. Too far back?
10 Florida Boy(L) Seems overdue for a lucky kind of effort. I know it rarely comes from post 10, but the Boy has overcome this before. Lots to like.

7th

David Brower's picks: 7-8-10-4

1 Extender N(L) Big test here. Extender has always done well at the 50/60K level, but he tends to run out of steam for 75. We'll find out now.
2 Grin Some More Also in one notch too high for this tag. I like the inside post, but it didn't help him last out. Will need more to get closer.
3 Village Ace N(L) Endured the brutal trip last time. He should get to the lead this week and any smooth trip gives him solid check chances.
4 Royal Man(L) Back at the Big M for Rucker. He's done very well here before and I mean both horse and trainer. No reason he can't threaten.
5 E Shopper(L) Very sharp right now and a fresh claim for Kevin Mac. It's the big bump up to the $75K level and Tetrick did opt to #1. Your call?
6 Poker Dice(L) Squandered good opportunity last out. I will pass here.
7 Hop Sing(L) You can't ever eliminate this game, old campaigner. Found renewed confidence over at Yonkers and that will help again. Must use.
8 Aboycalledsu N(L) Rallying strongly in every recent race. I guess it's all about the pace up front and his trip from behind. Must be close enough.
9 Mata Harry(L) Not exactly rewarded with this post, despite his two solid efforts. I just don't see how he can overcome this spot. We'll find out.
10 Allstar Blue Jean Yes, the Open was too high, but he was also very dull. Which Blue Jean shows up tonight? I wish I could answer that.

8th

David Brower's picks: 1-6-5-2

1 With Anticipation Gets a touch of much needed class relief. Makes second start back in Varty barn and I will remind he paced in 1:47 for him.
2 Armbro Cayenne(L) Gets much needed post relief and I would consider this one tonight, even if Tetrick opts to #4. This horse is sitting on big one.
3 Idealist(L) Hiking way up with no recent wins. This is probably too tough.
4 Pacific Playboy(L) I must admit, this is not one of my favorites. Always a tad overbet and he doesn't seem to win all that often. Not quite my type.
5 Y Knot(L) Want a live longshot? This could be it. Tends to jump up when least expected. This is perfect post and bunch. Had a few starts to tune up.
6 Natural Talent(L) This is one of my favorites and he comes off another solid try in chase of uncatchable winner. Looms one of the faves, however.
7 Eyes On Kassa(L) Never know what you're going to get from him. Moves back outside, so that limits options. I'll let him beat me if he can.
8 Bay Sign(L) As expected, he was overbet last week and couldn't overcome the trip. From this starting slot, it will be off the pace. That might work better.
9 Winfall Nasty He's coming from last and in this situation, I'm going to leave him out. Hoping for very hot pace and some seriously live cover.
10 Golden Mattjesty(L) Not exactly loaded with speed, is he? Been favored in three straight and trip didn't help in last two. Needs more luck.

9th

David Brower's picks: 4-7-2-3

1 Talbot Redneck Makes Big M debut tonight and gets pole, but not Pierce. I still give him a chance, since he likes to win. Sharp form now.
2 Sharp Attack Jet This was Pierce's pick and his first try here showed promise. Several of these are moving up in class. Who will handle it best?
3 Lessman(L) Struggled in that one try at this level, but then bounced back smartly. He's a one move type that loses Sears, but I like spot for a trip.
4 Bullvillelightning One of these nights, this guy is going to shock us. He will need a few things his way, but it's not out of question in here.
5 Oh Poncho(L) Still not sharp and still unbettable until he wakes back up.
6 Yokozuna Bo(L) Failed to fire in first start, so I cannot endorse until he proves he belongs here. We haven't seen it yet.
7 Dontakeyourguns This was Sears' choice, so let's respect that. A couple of those starts were good. I wouldn't want short price, but usable.
8 Fine-Tuner Doesn't get any post relief, that's for sure. Has offered some sneaky finishing kick, but might need to get lucky from out here.
9 Here Comes Therain Still a longshot, especially with the move even further outside. Not a whole lot to recommend.
10 Herzon(L) No shot in first try here. No shot in tough spot over at Yonkers. Is it no shot from post 10 now? That might be true. We must be patient.

10th

David Brower's picks: 3-8-2-4

1 Psilvuheartbreaker(L) Has shocked fields like this before and I do believe it came from pole position. Will hit cones, sit in and try get lucky late.
2 Palone Ranger Finished with all kinds of good late pace last week. The ideal prep for this, but with that said, I wouldn't want any short price.
3 Gold Dust Beach(L) Same boat as #2. Loaded late. It was exactly what barn probably wanted. He's in mixed sale on 21st. This is chance to shine.
4 Mr Feelgood The Jug winner flashed just enough sneaky late foot to warrant an extra look. Play this race by price and bet who offers value.
5 Manhardt(L) No recent wins. A very tough spot to make Big M return. I don't think I could like him, until he proves he belongs in here.
6 Scapa N(L) Was on a roll here in the summer. Worked his way all way to top level. However, this is asking a lot. How far can his speed go?
7 Holborn Hanover(L) After a great holiday meet, his lustre has faded a touch. He still has plenty of back class and only needs the right setup.
8 Tarver Hanover(L) His best weapon is pure speed, so don't be shocked if Yannick just sends him. I would. It's his only way into this event. Blast.
9 Fake Denario N(L) Another that's doing very well in the care of Josh Green, but they appear hopelessly buried with post nine. Must get lucky.

11th

David Brower's picks: 5-2-8-7

1 Micheles Dream Guy In line for a nice, inside trip tonight. Every once in a while that pays off. I could consider for an underneath spot in gimmicks.
2 Flak Jacket N(L) Had some pace last time in traffic. Wasn't Goodell's choice, but we do get Sears instead. I'd take a long look here if I were you.
3 Spirited Scoot(L) Out of claimers now, but he's threatening to turn things around. Will need a trip to do best damage, but not out of question.
4 Chevie Dooley This could be a little too tough for him. I will pass.
5 Most Happy Keene(L) Obviously the one to catch. Did a nice job of chasing Panaramic Art and will be pointed to lead tonight. Will they catch?
6 Sony Hanover Not a lot of luck here. Just one win last season and already a few tough trips. Not quite my type. For the longshot players only.
7 CC Make A Buck These outside posts are killing him. No chance to catch last time. Might be same situation here against #5. I wish him luck.
8 Lesters Wester(L) This horse is just loaded right now. Finishing each race with tons of pace. Hoping somebody softens up #5 and he can catch.
9 Isaac Newton(L) Needs a few things to set up for him and I don't anticipate that happening for tonight. Watch for later consideration, though.
10 Perfect Magic This was Goodell's choice. Won with him back at Chester, but this is brutal spot. They'll have to get lucky to win this.

12th

David Brower's picks: 1-2-4-3

1 Yankee Galaxy Like I said last week, if you've watched this horse race recently, you have to bet on him. Ultra-sharp right now and best.
2 Notorious Bigslick(L) Finally gets a little post relief and better use it to advantage. #1 doesn't leave, so expect JC to be aggressive one more time.
3 Dontgetintheway(L) Gearing up off a mini-layoff. Showed stakes quality speed last season. That qualifier was okay, but he might need one.
4 Art's Image Had no chance against #1 last time, but with that race under his belt, he should be tighter and stronger now. Consider that, use.
5 H Hall Appears to have tailed off a touch and has now missed a few weeks. With that said, let's look for any signs of more stamina. Maybe.
6 Heart Broker(L) Proved that first win was no fluke, however, this is the biggest step up in class at track. The move from NW2 to NW3 is big.
7 Mugsy McGraw(L) A fresh claim here. Stormed home twice against lowly claimers and now faces a real field. He's got something to prove tonight.
8 Topgun Raider(L) Got cooked in first start for new barn. Moves to much tougher post and there's lots of other speed in here. Not an easy spot.
9 Johnny Midnight He's got speed too, but comes off brutal trip. It might actually be time to take him back and let him rally for once.
10 Can't Slay Me(L) Very sharp of late, but it's yet another post 10. Pass.

13th

David Brower's picks: 8-3-7-5

1 Pick A Trail(L) Can keep up with these at times. Worth including in gimmicks, if the price is right from the pole. No shuffles allowed tonight.
2 The Fraternity Pan(L) Coming out of Chester and hasn't raced in almost a month. With that said, I'd like to watch one first. Your call?
3 Jovial Joker N(L) Not bad last time. Had no chance at catching Napoleon last week. This race could have a lot of pace in it. That works.
4 Bullvilleintherain(L) Still a longshot in my book and I will pass again.
5 Yukon Cornelius(L) Overbet last time, as expected and he wasn't overly sharp. This post is better and will give the Bomber options. Use.
6 Mr Thirty Two First one back off the mini-layoff. Qualifier was good, but I must note that Dave Miller opted to #9. That tells us something.
7 Cam's Fool(L) Plenty of back class here, but you never know what you're going to get. If price were short, I wouldn't exactly rush to the windows.
8 Sand Gogh(L) Hasn't had an easy trip yet and it will probably continue here. Slides back down in class and I'll take a shot that he's overdue.
9 My Fella This was Miller's choice over #6. Best known as a one run closer. Has post nine and drops a tick. Hard to leave out, but it's your call.
10 Whitesand Mirage(L) Where's he going from post 10? Not very far.

14th

David Brower's picks: 3-8-1-2

1 Crazy For Ever(L) Gets post relief. Gets Tetrick and finds a nice, cozy spot here. I don't expect that he'll offer big price, but he can win this w/ trip.
2 Three Quarter Cam(L) Parlayed the perfect trip into a nice, easy win over weaker. We know he's got back class, but I must note Yannick took 3.
3 Super Eighty Eight(L) This was Yannick's choice over #2, so that has to tell us something. Plenty of back class in this corner as well. Your call?
4 Wattie N(L) Goodell off now to #6. Must be considered a longshot. Pass.
5 Mandala Quest Had some good moments here last year. This is first start back off a mini-layoff and I suspect he might need a start or two.
6 Ideal Shuttle(L) Always right there, but he rarely wins. With that said, use underneath in superfectas, but I won't put on top. Not my type.
7 Barolo Hanover(L) A fresh face up from Rosecroft. Those were some decent fields he faced down there. I give him small chance to threaten.
8 Dudinkas Cullen N(L) Loved his qualifiers, but he appears to lack any early speed. It's post eight. How far back will he be, and how low the price?
9 Redstone Ruckus(L) Never one of my favorites and he's stuck with another bad post. It killed him last week and it might hurt him again.
10 Dragon Smoke(L) Moves from pole to post 10. Early speed does not appear to be his best weapon, so he might need some luck to reach.

Have Fun

Im either going up to Carbondale tomorrow or down your way with my brother Tomorrow? I'll wear my Al Capone Hat. How about the corruption charges with Louie! Amazing with a priest lying!
