Falcons' Hall signs contract with Raiders

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 03/20/08

Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall has signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders, which, in turn, will facilitate a trade in which the Falcons will receive a second-round pick this year and possibly an additional pick.

Hall agreed to a seven-year contract that will total $67 million. The NFL Network is reporting $24.5 million of the contract is guaranteed.

Besides receiving the two draft picks,
Oaklands 2nd round this year and fifth next year.

The Falcons will clear almost $3 million in room under the salary cap by moving Hall.

The trading of Hall follows him repeatedly expressing concerns about the direction of the team, even under newly hired general manager Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith. Hall said he was tired of losing, even though he is headed to a team with a far more dubious situation of late than Atlanta's.

Hall's desire for a new contract factored into the decision, but the Falcons also are reconstructing an aged, broken-down roster after suffering through quarterback Michael Vick's dogfighting indictment and other struggles over the past three seasons. Owner Arthur Blank is trying to re-cast a more positive image, and Hall's discontent and outspokenness didn't fit the mold.

The trade with Oakland gives the Falcons fairly ample means to rebuild, even though the process could take longer than a season. They will possess 10 draft picks after the trade, four in the top 48 selections ? including the No. 3 overall choice.

The Falcons, who were roughly $12 million under the $116 salary cap before the trade, could find Hall's replacement in the draft or go outside their roster.

Chris Houston, who is entering his second season, is expected to start at one corner. Von Hutchins, a free-agent acquisition for Houston, has started at cornerback and safety. Neophytes Brent Grimes and David Irons are the other two cornerbacks on the team.

Man I was holding my breath waiting for this to happen. I cannot believe that Oakland gave up any thing for Hall. What a fawking loser.

The guy cannot tackle anyone. He hates tackling or hitting hard. :142smilie

Hall returning kicks. he will run out of bounds more than Vick ever did :142smilie

Halls attitude alone is a cancer and he is either stupid or just does not have any character about him at all.

I am thrilled Hall is gone.

Two second round picks for a Pro Bowl player :142smilie and the Falcons got the best out of that deal.

Wait and see how Hall covers this year. He is a joke of a cornerback. And when he does let a touchdown get by him, he does not care much anyway. And will point fingers at other players.

See ya Hall . That was a close one. I thought for sure Oakland would come to their senses. Al Davis is pretty much Tom Foolery .

Falcons sign veteran kicker Elam

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 03/21/08

Free-agent placekicker Jason Elam has agreed to a four-year, $9 million deal with the Falcons, according to his Atlanta-based agent Jack Reale.

The acquisition of Elam, 38, means that reliable veteran kicker Morten Andersen, 47, will not return to the Falcons, where he has been nearly automatic from 43 yards in for a team that has had trouble scoring the past two seasons.

Elam, a graduate of Brookwood High School, has spent all of his 15 previous NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos.

Another hole plugged by the Falcons.

Finally Arthur Blank is keeping his nose out of
the football deals. :00hour :00hour

In looking at Halls statistics I find he has never had a QB sack and 17 overall interceptions.

Maybe he will fit into Oaklands plans as they already have a excellant defensive secondary.

really hard to forget this as Hall could have directly slapped Blank, coachs , et all right in the mug.
Talk about poor decision making.

The AFC West just got a little tougher or a little easier for receivers, depending on who you believe.

That's how mixed the reviews are from league insiders on the Raiders' recent acquisition of DeAngelo Hall, a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback who has 17 career interceptions.

"He's a talented guy who gives them some plays, but he doesn't play smart at times," one NFC personnel exec said. "He gives up some plays to guys who shouldn't beat him." Others echoed that sentiment, saying the former first-round pick is an "overrated" cover corner who fails to play at an elite level consistently.

However, given Hall's age (24) and potential, the deal should be considered a bargain under the terms of the agreement. In exchange for a second- and sixth-round pick, the Raiders get a corner who is suited to Rob Ryan's man-heavy scheme. Hall can handle press coverage, and his outstanding speed allows him to challenge elite receivers at the line without fear.

"The move is a very aggressive play by the Raiders, but it gives them two top notch players at the corner in the prime of their careers," said an AFC scout. "Despite Hall's flaws, I love the way he competes against top receivers, and pairing him with Nmandi Asomugha makes life difficult for receivers in the AFC West."

Not everyone is on board with Hall as a so-called lockdown corner. It isn?t difficult to find a Falcons fan who can point to dozens of times he was victimized for every sensational play he makes, making him little more than a glorified Phillip Buchanon. The Houston Texans took a look at Buchanon?s occasional interceptions and multiple touchdowns, gave up two draft picks for him and discovered that, as Tim Brown said, ?Phillip giveth and Phillip taketh away.?

Hall will be on an island as never before with the Raiders, who play predominantly man coverage. Oakland?s pass rush, to be kind, was spotty. End Derrick Burgess has seen his sack totals dwindle form 16 to 11 to 8 over the three years, and last year?s count was padded by a few cheap ones which came when a quarterback lost a yard on a scramble.

Getting rid of Hall just makes another huge hole and the 38 year old kicker who kicked in high altitude might end up having a weaker leg then Anderson. I think it would be a very good idea to start planning what you are gonna do with next years number one pick in the draft. Unless Detroit makes another brilliant move to steal your spot.

Yeh the Falcons have a 3 year program.

no rush to get better as long as they dont make the stupid drafts and free agents McKay made over and over.

I like what Dimitroff and Smith have done so far. They are keeping Blank at bay and that was the biggest obstacle right there.

Its like Jerry Jones in Dallas who is not qualified to make draft picks but will sit in the war room and make all the decisions himself.:SIB

GIMME 5: Tressel says take Gholston

Published on: 03/25/08

Quite a guy, that Buckeye

And with the No. 3 pick in the 2008 NFL draft, the Falcons select ... Ohio State defensive lineman Vernon Gholston? Could happen. Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel gives us five things NFL executives and draftnik fans should know about the top prospect:

1. His humility and unselfishness are tremendous, and impressive when you see that attitude in such a physically imposing man.

2. Vernon is an athlete among athletes ? a modern-day Hercules in every physical component. His workouts have been the stuff of legend.

3. He can tell a story and hold an audience spellbound. Get him started on Bible school stories some time and young and old people are equally captivated.

4. He is one of the most consistent players I've ever coached, and he has maintained that even keel throughout his pro preparation.

5. His big-play ability did a lot of great things for the Buckeyes, and we all thank him.

Falcons get extra third-round pick

NFL grants pick due to team's loss of free agents

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 03/31/08

Palm Beach, Fla. ? The Falcons acquired an additional third-round pick Monday, giving them 11 selections for the April 26-27 draft. The picks put the team in a position to stockpile talent on a roster in need of an upgrade.

The NFL awarded the Falcons the 35th pick in the third round through its compensatory process. Teams are given additional picks to offset the loss of high-caliber free agents and the acquisition of less productive free agents the year before. The losses of Patrick Kerney (Seattle), Justin Griffith (Oakland) and Ashley Lelie (San Francisco) and the addition of Ovie Mughelli and Lewis Sanders caused the league to provide the Falcons with the third-highest compensatory pick doled out.

The Falcons now hold six picks in the first three rounds: No. 3 overall in the first round, three in the second round ? a total of four in the top 48 selections ? and two in the third round.

This is the second consecutive year the Falcons will have 11 draft picks.

Lets hope they keep McKay and Arthur out of the selection proecess.
