mercer +11: regular readers will recall last Wednesday when I faded the auburn tigers against former visiting coach cliff ellis and his coastal carolina chanticleers with two starters suspended right before the game for weed possession. auburn was off a 1 pt loss in nyc to acc bottom dweller boston college, and with the suspensions were looking to just get by the lesser visitors as 11- pt favorites, right? not exactly, as what ensued was a 45 pt ass whuppin highlighted by the tigers tossing in a school and sec record 21 3 pointers on 56% shooting, and holding coastal to 32% from the field. to say I was stunned is an understatement.
fast forward 3 days and its de'ja' vu, groundhog day, instant replay all over again with the mercer bears coming to auburn. similarly ranked visitor, same line, same two starters suspended, expect similar results, right? is it really that easy? my skeptical nature says not, sees this as a trap line, ands looks for reasons to play the visitor again. and I see plenty of tiger distractions to urge me on. today auburn 5* breaks out recruit and double legacy Austin wiley, who just cleared with the ncaa and will play his first game as a tiger against mercer. the hype for this kid in auburn is enormous. his presence will further shake up the tiger rotation already missing brown and spencer. bruce the pearl and the tigers have to be looking forward as next week they play @ Oklahoma and @ UConn before starting their conference @ Georgia.
meanwhile, mercer took a 43 point pasting at Clemson last Friday, where they shot 30% from the field, immediately before breaking for a week for exams. and I repeat, the 11- point line is the same as it was for coastal last week. the play is as ugly as it gets, and playing the bears is like looking for a pickup at last call, but sometimes that's how we roll.
