Mets unload Alomar to White Sox for three prospects
July 1, 2003

New York Mets second baseman Roberto Alomar has been traded to the Chicago White Sox for three minor league prospects, SportsLine.com has confirmed.

The Mets received minor league pitchers Royce Ring and Edwin Almonte and infielder Andrew Salvo.

Alomar came to the Mets from Cleveland in an eight-player deal on Dec. 11, 2001. He had been selected for 12 consecutive All-Star games and won 10 Gold Gloves. He batted .336 with 20 home runs and 100 RBI in his final season with the Indians.

With the Mets last season, he hit just .266 as the team finished last in the NL East. He was hitting .262 with two home runs when the trade was made.

The trade returns Alomar to the American League where he batted .313 in 11 seasons with Toronto, Baltimore and Cleveland and 168 of his 203 career home runs. He spent his first three major league seasons with the San Diego Padres.

In Chicago, Alomar also will be reunited with his brother. Catcher Sandy Alomar signed as a free agent with the White Sox before the season.

Alomar is in the final year of his contract which pays him $8 million this season. The Mets will pay the remainder of his contract, about $3.9 million. He had asked the team for a contract extension during spring training but the team preferred to wait.

Almonte, 26, is 2-6 with 14 saves and a 6.88 ERA in 30 games at Triple-A Charlotte. The right-hander is 21-29 with 83 saves and a 3.12 ERA in six minor league seasons.

Ring, 22, is 1-4 with 19 saves and a 2.52 ERA in 36 games at Double-A Birmingham. The left-hander was the club's first-round pick in the 2002 draft.

Salvo, 23, has split the season between Class A Kannapolis and Class A Winston-Salem, hitting .223 with one home run and six RBI in 42 games. The second baseman is a career .273 hitter in three seasons.

Mets fans loved it too a year and a half ago... Whether he plays well or not, this guy showed his true colors here in NY.. I'd be extremely suprised if your still happy with this trade by seasons end.

Will be interesting to see how he does. Haven't see a lot of Mets games the last couple of seasons, but of the ones I've watched, I was amazed at how downhill this guy has gone. Also, it's probably not fair for me to comment on him defensively as I haven't seen him day in and day out, but of the games I've watched, it seems like he's lost some range also.

As much as I hate to say it, the fact is that Minny has a chance to open up some space in the division. They haven't even played one game vs the Tribe yet. 19 Games vs the Indians coming up and I believe 13 left with Detroit yet.

TV...the Jays lost to the team with the highest payroll in the Central divsion...whoops, forgot that doesn't make a team good......heard that the other day and just had to laugh...Tigers are in bad shape for at least a few more years...too bad they can't get rid of any of those high priced guys.

mets being the mets, basically paid a few million for one long range " might be prospect"(ring) and two other long range "fillers".

white sox had nothing to lose doing this deal...

Don't care for Alomar, much, but the fact that they made this trade to win now is going to be a huge boost for the clubhouse. This is a hitting team that has had no bats for the entire season and are definitely turning it around now.

There's alot of reasons to start liking the Sox right now.

I THINK ALOMAR WILL TURN HIS CAREER AROUND BEING BACK IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE WHERE THE PITCHING IS HORRID. SOME PEOPLE ARE BETTER IN ONE LEAGUE THAN ANOTHER LEAGUE.

PLUS I THINK HE WAS DISSATISFIED AT NY.....WHEN U R HAPPY, U PLAY ALOT BETTER.

I THINK HE WILL BE CLOSER TO HIS FORM FROM YRS PAST, JUST MY OPINION.

PROBABLY GOOD TRADE FOR BOTH TEAMS BUT CWS WILL GET THE IMMEDIATE BENEFITS.

MY TAKE.

IM Storming,

Lefty Ring from sd state is potential closer at best going into next spring training for mets...94 mph fastball..former first round pick in 02....
was ranked by Baseball America as the 10th best prospect in the White Sox organization.

in almonte vision setup man at best or middle innings eater when mets are 2-3 runs down...poor man's matt ginter...at best.

It's a good deal for The Sox and The Muts

Alomar batted 260 something here in New York. Shea Stadium destoys hitters, so I suspect he will be somewhat better off in Chi-Town.

His fielding range has deteriorated somewhat.
Also there is a reason this guy has made the rounds.

Well the mets got rid of a piece of cancer today for basically nothing in return except 1 potential lefthanded closer, but we shall see. As for Alomar, he will probably go on to hit 350 the rest of year since he is finally out of NY and playing with his brother.
Hopefully now they can get rid of Benitez another head case who needs to move on. Guy can not even save regular season games anymore, let alone big games with a lot on the line. With another blown save tonight, his stock continues to plummet and maybe they can salvage a top ball boy for him

Others on the "To Go" wish list:

Cedeno - Mr. I forgot how to steal a base and have no idea how to play the outfield

Vaugn - Although I would not wish an injury on anyone, he already has it, but hopefully he does not recover in time and the Mets will recover the rest of his contract which includes this year and next - roughly 13 million a seaon, OUCH!

I like the youth they are finally injecting into the lineup especially Pitchers Seo and Heilman and the likes of Reyes, Wilson, Phillips and Wiggington. Hopefully, idiot Met management have finally realized that you can not win by continuing to bring in OVERPAID/OVER THE HILL players!

:thefinger

Lets hope they are finally on the right path and this past several years of pathetic baseball is behind them for all Mets fans sake

Looks like they added Everett too. Another 'great' guy for the clubhouse.
