FROM AP:

Denver bottled up Marshall Faulk, slowed Garrison Hearst and took LaDainian Tomlinson out of the game plan.

The Broncos have stopped three of the league's best running backs, but they still haven't faced their biggest challenge. That comes Sunday night against Ricky Williams and the Miami Dolphins.

``They're better than in years past because of Ricky Williams,'' Denver tight end Shannon Sharpe said. ``And I think the biggest thing with him is you've got a guy that's hungry and he wants to prove something. He wants to prove that New Orleans gave up on him and they didn't give him a fair shake.''

Williams, acquired in an offseason trade, has been a key reason Miami (4-1) is leading the AFC East. He has eclipsed 100 yards in each of the Dolphins' victories -- one short of the team record for 100-yard games in a season -- and is second in the league with 565 yards.

Perhaps just as important to the Dolphins, Williams has proven he can have a lot of carries and still run hard at the end of games, something Miami has lacked in the past.

Williams has at least 24 carries in three games this season, including a team-record 36 last week in a victory over New England, and is averaging 4.8 yards per carry.

``He's a talented running back,'' Miami coach Dave Wannstedt said. ``We want to run the football and you have to have players to do those things. Coaches can draw that stuff on the board and it all looks good in clinics, but you have to have players to win games and to do things.''

It should be a challenge the other way, as well.

Denver (4-1) has the league's second-best rushing defense at 61 yards per game and is holding teams to a league-low 3.2 yards per carry.

The Broncos held St. Louis' Faulk and San Francisco's Hearst to a combined 24 yards on 15 carries. Last week, Denver limited Tomlinson, the league's leading rusher at the time, to 38 yards on 13 carries in the first half. San Diego passed on 33 of its final 34 plays.

``They've always been a blitz team and a pressure team, but I see these guys just sitting in there and being able to stop the run and do things without blitzing,'' Wannstedt said. ``That's usually a pretty good indication of how good you are.''

Both teams enter the game after bouncing back from embarrassing losses.

Two weeks ago, Miami allowed 450 yards in a 48-30 loss to Kansas City, but responded by holding the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots to 245 yards in a 26-13 victory.

Against Baltimore two weeks ago, Denver lost its composure in the second quarter and fell apart on special teams in a 34-23 loss.

Last week, Denver beat the Chargers 26-9 to tie for second in the AFC West behind 4-0 Oakland.

The Broncos completely altered San Diego's game plan by taking away Tomlinson, and Brian Griese had perhaps his best game as a pro, throwing for 316 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-35 passing.

``After two weeks ago, being embarrassed on national TV, we have fortunately another opportunity very quickly to show that we weren't that kind of a team,'' said Griese, who's second in the AFC with a 67.9 completion percentage.

``Despite the fact that we had a nice win last week, not everybody saw it. This week there is the mentality of we have something to show everybody and prove that last week was a fluke.''

The game resumes a series that has taken some odd twists.

The teams played just once between 1975-98 -- in the snow in September 1985 -- but then they played twice in four weeks.

The Dolphins, led by Dan Marino, beat Denver 31-21 in the 1998 regular season, but John Elway and the Broncos beat Miami 38-3 in the second round of the playoffs en route to their second straight Super Bowl victory.

Miami battered Griese, who grew up in Miami while his father, Bob, played quarterback for the Dolphins in the 1970s, when the teams met again early in 1999. Griese, in his second game as Denver's starter, had a broken finger, a torn labrum, a thigh bruise and a cut on his hand in the 38-21 loss.

The Dolphins won 21-10 in December, when two turnovers in 15 seconds by Denver led to 21 fourth-quarter points.

Griese, trying to avoid a sack, had an interception returned for a 56-yard touchdown by defensive lineman Kenny Mixon. Chris Cole fumbled the ensuing kickoff to set up another Dolphins score.

``I'm looking forward to getting back on the field against these guys,'' Griese said.

Revenge: That last line by Griese is what I am going on in making a wager on this game. Will await 4pm game results before making a decision on how many units, but I see Den winning this won by 6+.

Yea, I REALLY like the UNDER versus a side........:)

And yea, I made $2 and a little more last night :) I learned a major lesson last night---dont go overboard betting too many games :) (like i didnt already know it) I was bored yesterday, and started capping all the college games.......ended up making 10 early picks.....went 1-9  then went back to the drawing board, made 16 late game plays......and went 13-3 (NOTE--Ill never do that many bets again, I knew before hand it was stupid, and just did it trying to make up for my early losses--Dont try this at home!--Talk about taking some Alka-seltzers during those late games)

Anyway, good lesson learned, and glad to learn it and still be in the black====whew........

Broncos very strong at home. M iami is a diffeent team this year, but Fiedler is still their QB. I am no big fan of Griese, but Miami QB is certainly no better. Home field advantage very strong in this game.

Gentlemen,

I believe the Bronco's have not allowed a 100 yard rusher at home in 18 games. If the Dolphins cannot run the ball effectively then it will be up to Fiedler to make things happen for the Dlophins.

The Bronco's have shut down the best RB's in the game so far this year (they haven't faced KC or Miami yet), and I believe they can shut down RW tonight.

The Miami kicking game was not at it's best last week missing a PAT and having a FG blocked. This could make a difference with a key # like 3/4.

I believe Denver had it's wake up call against the Ravens and they are pretty nice as home fav's over the years.

I don't think this one is close by games end.

(be advised that I bleed Orange (Bronco's and Canes), and these comments may be biased)

I will teach you a lesson...

If you care to learn the facts the last 3 YES 3 years MIAMI has had

the one of the 10 toughest schedule in the NFL. I dont need to BS.

Look up the facts on NFL.com yourself.

Yeah playing Indy,Jets,Bills and the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS were easy games ! Now you are ignorant. THE AFC EAST has been the toughest division in football for years !

You just proved you ignorance.

Take DENVER PLEASE ! so I can laugh when you lose.

Myopic Dolphin Fan - I have nothing against the Fish. In fact I have a futures bet on them. If you want to convince me and everybody else that Fiedler is a top quarterback in the NFL, you will have a hard time doing that despite his record. What is his playoff record? The point is that if the Broncos stop the run (as happened last week, week before, etc), the Fish will have to rely on Jay to move the ball. I think the Broncos would be happy if that happened. In fact, wasn't he even fighting for his spot in early post season this year? You will never convince me that Fiedler is the guy the Dolphins want taking the snaps.

HR,

I certainly hope you teach me a lesson tonight, but here is one for you.

As far a Defenses go this year (which is all that matters to me, as opposed to your 3 year fixation), I hope for your sake these stats don't hold true to form.

Home/Away stats Defense

pts Yards Pass Rush
Miami 30.5 441 308 132
Denver 16 310 261 50

the offenses' are pretty close stat wise so I won't waste my time with those.

I would give a slight edge to Miami's offense.
I give a big edge to Denver's defense.
If Miami's kicking game has the troubles it did last week it will give Denver the edge there.
The coaches are even (I would actually give a slight edge to Denver).

If there is any lesson to be learned here, it is to not bet with your heart.

Good Luck H/R as one of us will be a winner...

Now that I have looked it up, it is true that Fiedler is near the top of qb win percentages. In fact, he is above Favre. I doubt the Fish would rather have Favre under center than Fiedler. As a matter of fact, I think the perennial all-star Jim Miller is right near the top also. There is a guy that everybody wants. And finally, the future all-star, Shaun King of the Tampa Bay Bucs, has a winning percentage only .001 below that of Fiedler. So that pretty much says it all - Fiedler and Shaun King fighting for the top ranking in Florida. The fans are waiting with baited breath!

Ok now take Shaun King and how many games has he started Fieldler has been the starter for 3 years !

That comparison is a JOKE !

I would rather have Fiedler than 75% of the SHITTY QB's in this league.

Too bad you just can't give respect to FIEDLER where its due.

Oh yeah thats right I would rather have Griese...too bad the DOLPHINS skipped him in the draft in favor of FIEDLER.

Enjoy the ANGELS going to world series !!! :D

HR,
What is your fixation with the 3year stats???

Fiedler will not be the only player on the field tonight, there will be 21 other out there combined (unless yo count the couple they will try to sneak out there to contain Rod Smith and Eddy Mac and Sharpe)...

Like I said before, one of us will be a winner tonight.

Stay with your Play Time to Make $$$

Stay with your Play Time to Make $$$

And CHILL OUT Low Bowler, I mean HighRoller...
Let me teach you a lesson and LAUGH MY ASS Off when Denver Wins and Covers tonight.
Here some Numbers (Recent Trends) to throw at ya:
Denver is 7-1 ATS with Revenge in October
Denver is 14-3-1 ATS Home versus team off SU Win in October
Miami is 1-5 ATS Away off DD win in October
Plus here is the big one...
My buddy and myself play each game for $5 bucks each week (Pride more than anything) and the last 5 weeks this season, the person leading has lost the Sunday Night game... I am up 8-4 and Have Miami, so therefore Denver is a BlueHorseShoe-In.
Nothing personal here, just didn't feel like attending school today and damn sure don't need to be taught a lesson.
