The RedHawks are eager for their contest tonight on ESPN2 against Ball State.

Ball State's football game against Miami tonight falls in a spot on its schedule commonly referred to as a "trap."The Cardinals are coming off a key contest last week against Mid-American Conference West title challenger Northern Illinois, a game they handily won 45-14.

Their game next week is on the road against Central Michigan, the MAC champ the past two years and the preseason favorite to win again this year.

Right in the middle of those games is the contest against Miami. The RedHawks have little to play for at this point of the season except to give a good account of themselves against a MAC power in the nationally televised game on ESPN2.

The RedHawks are eager for their opportunity.

"We need to treat this like it's our MAC championship," Miami coach Shane Montgomery said. "We had a lot of expectations going into the year ... and things haven't gone our way.

"Ball State is a team that could be in the MAC championship game in three weeks ... and we have to play like it's our MAC championship game."

The No. 14 Cardinals (9-0, 5-0 MAC West) have said all the right things about not overlooking the RedHawks (2-7, 1-4 MAC East). That doesn't mean coach Brady Hoke doesn't have concerns.

"I worry about everything all the time, so sure, no question you're always concerned," Hoke said. "That's where the leadership of the seniors and the guys who are playing a lot of football ... (and) as coaches, how you want to prepare this team is all a big part of it."

The Cardinals' performance against Miami the past two years has Hoke's attention.

In 2006, Ball State need a 1-yard TD pass from Nate Davis to Madaris Grant to pull out a 20-17 victory at Miami.

Last year, the RedHawks scored a touchdown with 17 seconds to play to dump the Cardinals 14-13 at Scheumann Stadium.

"I have a hard time believing (today's game) will be that low scoring," Montgomery said. "When you play against an offense as good as they are, and with the confidence they have, we just have to try to slow them down. They're playing so well, that will be a challenge for us."

Nate Davis is coming off one of the best games of his career. The junior quarterback completed 18-of-22 passes, connecting on his final 12 attempts. He passed for 300 yards and tied his career record with four touchdown passes.

Davis has 8,000 career passing yards, only the 10th quarterback to reach that figure in MAC history.

"It will be vital to put some pressure on Nate Davis," Montgomery said. "Last year, we got some hits on him. You have to make him get rid of the ball quicker than he wants."

BSU football: Five things to watch

1. Get your motor running

Ball State rediscovered its offensive consistency last week against Northern Illinois after struggling throughout big chunks of its previous three games. The rust came off just in time as the Cardinals headed into a demanding stretch of games in November. Ball State lit up Northern's No. 1 MAC defense for 529 yards of offense, its best output in the past 18 games.

2. Do they have Nate's number?

Cardinals quarterback Nate Davis last week became only the 10th player in MAC history to throw for 8,000 career yards. But he's been limited in two career games against Miami. As a freshman starter in 2006, Davis completed only 11-of-24 passes for 98 yards against the RedHawks. Last year, he completed 19-of-36 throws for 198 yards. The completion percentage of .500 and average yards of 148.0 are way below his career norms. Statistically, Miami's pass defense is one of the better ones in the MAC, so Davis will need to be on his game to have success.

3. Miami 'D' tough in middle

Miami could have the best linebacking corps in the MAC. Joey Hudson in the middle, Clayton Mullins on the weak side and Caleb Bostic on the strong side all were named to the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award. It was the first time in the 24-year history of the award three players from the same team were identified. Bostic was beaten out for a starting job five games ago by Chris Shula, grandson of NFL coaching legend Don Shula. Hudson, Mullins and Shula have combined for 187 tackles.

4. Field-position football

Two of the best punters in the nation could turn the game into a battle of field position if the offenses have trouble. Miami's Jake Richardson ranks third in the nation with a 46.8-yard average per kick, and he's booted 15 balls further than 50 yards. Ball State's Chris Miller has always had a strong leg (his 45.0 career average is on pace to break a school record). This year, he has developed a fine pooch kick that has resulted in 10 of his 23 punts being kicked inside the 20-yard line. Ball State ranks first and Miami second in the MAC in net punting.

5. The skinny

Miami began the season with big expectations after playing in the MAC championship game a year ago. The RedHawks and Bowling Green were the clear challengers for the East crown, but injuries and subpar play caused Miami's season to unravel with a 1-4 MAC record. Still, Ball State will have to play good football in an ESPN2 game that surely will inspire Miami to give a good account of itself on its home field. No team likes to be embarrassed on national television. The Cardinals clearly are the better team, and if they play to their level that will be apparent.

He should, as its a distinct possibility that he will be out a job after this season ends. This may be as close as Mr. Montgomery will ever get again.
