Recruiting facility at center of storm

BERKELEY -- Flag-waving demonstrators far outnumbered a group of peace advocates who were protesting a U.S. Marine Corps recruiting center in downtown on Wednesday.
But groups on both sides of Shattuck Avenue slowed traffic and jammed sidewalks as they shouted back and forth at each other.

Police kept the two competing groups across the street from each other; there were no arrests.

One protester who was burning something was cited by police after he was warned by officers not to burn anything in public, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss.

Protests in Berkeley are nothing new.

A protest of a protest is unique -- even in Berkeley.

On one side of the street was CodePINK, Grandmothers Against the War, Berkeley East Bay Gray Panthers, Women in Black and other peace groups holding "no war" signs and chanting "out of Iraq."

On the other were military veterans, mothers and fathers of soldiers, members of the UC Berkeley College Republicans and Melanie Morgan, whose conservative talk show airs on KSFO. They waved American flags and chanted "USA, USA, USA."

But at times it was difficult to hear what either group was saying because each was trying to drown out the other as men on Harley Davidsons and frustrated motorists gunned their engines on the street between the groups.

"This is 2007, and we support our troops. We are not going to let CodePINK disgrace our military heroes," yelled Deborah Johns, a Granite Bay woman whose 23-year-old son
is preparing to head to Iraq for his fourth tour of duty. "My son is a hero, and so are all the others who served this country."
One of the peace advocates, Sheila Goldmacher, a Berkeley woman with Grandmothers Against the War, said she was pushed and shoved by the flag-wavers. "They have a right to be here -- they do not have the right to be thugs," she said.

The military recruiting center at 64 Shattuck Square, just south of University Avenue, opened its doors in December after moving from an Alameda building that was slated to be razed.

But objections did not begin until last month when CodePINK, an anti-war group, began protesting the center.

"Our message is very clear. We are peaceful people. We don't want to send our sons and daughters into this war. I think the sentiment of Berkeley is on this side of the street," said CodePINK co-founder Medea Benjamin.

Statistics show that Berkeley is sending fewer sons and daughters into the military. In fiscal year 2001, which ended three weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, 22 Berkeley residents joined the armed forces, according to Department of Defense enlistment data. By 2006, with the Iraq war in full swing, just 15 signed on, nearly one-third less.

Berkeley's drop mimics a California-wide trend. The Golden State in 2001 was the nation's largest source of new enlistees, with 23,503 residents joining the military in 2001. But in 2006, 2,400 fewer residents heeded the call, and today California ranks second behind Texas in recruitment.

The recruiting office, which has been defaced with graffiti in recent weeks, was closed during the protest Wednesday, and a representative was not on site to comment.

However, in a recently published editorial in the Berkeley Daily Planet newspaper, Capt. Richard Lund, the Marine Corps' officer selection officer for the northern Bay Area, said he chose the Berkeley site because "of its proximity to UC Berkeley and to the BART station."

If your worried about illegals--why give them sanctuary cities-have your liberal Clinton appointed judges not enforce correct ssn cards for employment--want to give illegals drivers licenses ect ect--

I'll tell you why-- because you need to shore up your 90% it ain't my fault voting block.

Back to reason our miltary is in Iraq and not Mexico-

let me take a wild guess-- there is war going on there(-ie military action) and not in mexico:shrug:

Both parties favor the dirty war and both favor open borders.

Was there a war going on in Iraq before we attacked her?

Thank GOD...if we can just get rid of the pink party San Fran pansies and fill the world with "middle" aged white idiotic gun totting red necks from the fly over states, then we can re-elect GW Genius again instead of a liberal Clinton/Obama negro/lesbian infidel and get the country where it needs to go.

Peace is for Code Pink Pussies. That is for should.

I like the way they fight illegal immigration---

Illegals OK'd to drive in N.Y.
By Joseph Curl
October 20, 2007

Gov. Eliot Spitzer's order to grant driver's licenses to illegal aliens in New York has enraged voters and Republican officials .

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has started a major political fight over immigration by ordering state officials to issue driver's licenses to illegal aliens, prompting at least one county legislature to defy the executive order and pushing toward a showdown in court.

The embattled governor's order has drawn some acerbic commentary, including a cartoon showing Osama bin Laden as a New York City taxi driver. After spending months trying to deflect charges that he used state police to target the Republican leader of the state Senate, Mr. Spitzer appears eager for a fight over this contentious issue.

"The rabid right that wants to pile on and use this to demagogue the issue will not carry the day in New York state," he said recently. "Those who view this as a political issue once again are taking the state in the wrong direction."

The driver's license issue has once again put the governor at odds with New Yorkers. When New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who inJune abandoned the Republican Party, criticized the order recently, the Democratic governor shot back that the mayor was "dead wrong, factually wrong, legally wrong, morally wrong, ethically wrong."

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani joined the list of opponents this week. "Governor Spitzer should not give licenses to illegals," he told the Republican Jewish Coalition on Tuesday. "It doesn't make sense."

The issue heated up late last week, when the Monroe County legislature defied the governor and ordered its county clerk to require anyone seeking a driver's license to provide a valid Social Security number. The decision runs counter to Mr. Spitzer's order, in which illegal aliens with valid foreign passports would be eligible to obtain a state driver's license.

Again, Mr. Spitzer was defiant: "I hate to say it ? the clerks have to enforce it," he said. "The clerks who issue driver's licenses are agents of the state. They do not make state law on this. State government does."

In another move, 29 clerks, all but one a Republican, voted to oppose the plan, with 13 vowing to directly disobey the governor, even if ordered to comply. The clerks said their offices would be hard-pressed to determine the legality of applicants.

What did the republicans do about immigration in the six years they controlled the senate and the presidency?

GOP has not done near enough grant you but the few they have has been nulified by liberals --ie the wall-liberals forming sancuary cities to prevent enforcing those laws on record already--and the clincher --they whine about the business's hiring them since they came to power and then you have 1st move to remedy--making business verify ssn # --and who steps in but liberal judges trying to keep them from it.

Heres your liberal logic Jabbers

Don't make them verify ssn but give them drivers licenses for ID purposes backed up by ssn that can't be verified--duh

--and while on ID's they find it impairative that illegals have them for ID but its discrimination if voters are required to have them--duh again.

Can you see a pattern here?

Now if you and yours can just get those disenfranchised felons a green light -you've tacked severa million more to your your 90% demographical automatic vote.

great answer....the GOP did nothing, but it somehow is a liberal issue. The "liberal" is your boogeyman, kinda like a Hitler Jew. It clouds your ability to think and reason.

Dogs, try to become a little more sophisticated.

The two parties differ only by degree.

The Republicans COULD shut down the border - if they wanted. Just as the Democrats COULD shut down the war - if they wanted.

It's all a puppet show for special-needs adults.

The two parties are one, and their platform is fkuc the American people and serve the Israelis and the giant corporations.

The same thing they did for abortion Jabber. They talk all the time about abortion and the red states fall for it over and over again. They had everything for six years including the supreme Court but nothing was done about this Platform abortion. They use this subject to fool the foolish. They don't want abortion illegal because they won't be able to use it again and fool guys like Six Five and DTB.

i think Spritzer is right about this. I don't want to get in an accident with someone who doesn't have a license. What kind of compensation are you gonna get from someone without a license? You might even get a bullet in your head because they don't have a license. Makes sense to me.

Sponge and Spy--which liberal board did you guys draft simpleton from?

Wasn't hard to make judgement on his abilty to reason with his 1st attempt at logic here---

The collapse of the World Trade Center was a surprise to many structural engineers.[49] No steel-framed skyscraper had ever before or since collapsed due to fire or other local damage, yet it occurred three times on September 11, 2001.

Seems simple enough

for a simpleton yes--Would one of the two of you einsteins point out to him there has never been a jet fly into top tier of skyscraper before-since or after for comparison.

Since 1st reply and maybe last reply to a post of yours Neids would like to end it on positive note with a few constructive suggestions per your astute logic--

--don't gamble
--if you invest- stick to mutual funds where someones doing the picking for you.
--try to be more optomistic--there is always silver lining if you look for it--RE--you get another pay raise on 7-24-08. :)

Seems to me there's a law in this country. If you drive a car you need a license. Or should they just take a bus. In fact why don't we all park those autos and start walking more or taking a bus. I mean to get to recruting station.
