It's all over the internet now.....

Shula is out at the Capstone

TUSCALOOSA | Mike Shula has been dismissed as the University of Alabama?s head football coach, multiple sources close to the Crimson Tide football program told The Tuscaloosa News on Sunday night.

Shula notified his assistant coaches late Sunday night after UA director of athletics Mal Moore gave him the news, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Neither Moore nor Shula were available for comment on Sunday night. UA is expected to make an official announcement today.

The Crimson Tide staff and players had a team meeting at the Paul W. Bryant Hall Academic Center on Sunday night, but Shula and the assistant coaches were not aware of their status at that time. The meeting concluded at approximately 9:15 p.m.

However, two sources confirmed to The News that Shula and Moore met after that time.

Moore and UA President Dr. Robert Witt met on Sunday afternoon, apparently to finalize their decision on Shula?s future.

Shula, 43, had been hired as the Crimson Tide?s football coach on May 4, 2003. The former UA quarterback had a coaching record of 26-23 in four seasons at the Tide helm.

He was given a raise and contract extension at the end of the 2005 season, following a 10-2 year which culminated with a victory in the Cotton Bowl.

However, he came under increasing fire this season as the Crimson Tide slipped to a 6-6 record, including a 2-6 mark in Southeastern Conference play. That included losses to Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee and Auburn, leaving Shula with a 2-14 record against those four annual UA rivals.

Following the Crimson Tide?s 22-15 loss to Auburn on Nov. 18, Shula said that he would ?evaluate every aspect? of the Crimson Tide football program. However, there was no official comment concerning Shula?s status until the following Wednesday, when Moore released a statement saying:

?As is customary at the end of the regular season, we are evaluating our football program. We are evaluating every aspect of our program and this is not a process that I wish to discuss at length in a public forum. We are bowl-eligible and we hope to remain positioned to play in a bowl game. We remain firm in our commitment to our student-athletes. I am proud of their efforts throughout this season and we are more determined than ever to return Alabama football to its rightful place among college football?s elite.?

Shula?s contract, which was amended earlier this year, calls for ?liquidated damages? of $3 million, plus $200,000 for each of the contract?s five remaining years. The buyout is to be paid in monthly installments and will be mitigated by any compensation Shula may receive from other employment in that time.

No timetable has been announced regarding the hiring of a replacement.

Tuscaloosa News executive sports editor David Wasson contributed to this story.

I knew you Awbies would be upset at the news. :mj07: :mj07:

I'm surprised they pulled the plug... but when they didn't come out one way or the other after the game, I started to wonder.

You know as well as I do that people in Alabama take football too damn serious sometimes. Reading the crap that is posted on the forums is comical and sad at the same time. People are talking about planes leaving from Tuscaloosa and going to Austin (Gene Chizik), Tampa (Jon Gruden), Louisville (Bobby Petrino), someplace in WV (Rich Rodriguez) and my favorite Columbia, SC (Steve Spurrier).

Spurrier took the job at USC a few years ago because the expectations there are not the same as at an Alabama, Florida, Auburn, etc. I know he's a competitor and wants to win... but he's also 62 and ready to take it easy and play some golf. If he can go there, become the all time winningest coach (only takes 65 wins) and maybe pull off an SEC Championship, he would be happy and done. Can't see him leaving there... especially to go to another conference school.

Would love to see Jim Grobe from Wake Forest, Joe Tiller from Purdue, Bobby Petrino from Louisville or Rich Rodriguez from West Virginia.

Whoever they hire better win though, LOL.

What took them so long. Bama looked like they had the better personnel in several of their losses this year. Shula is not head coaching material.

The press conference at 2PM is true... but as far as Spurrier... LOL, I'm with you. :mj07:

It would seem to me the easiest way to silence this rumor would be to track down where Spurrier is right now. :sadwave:

My brother got a call Thanksgiving night from a friend of his that the sister works in the Alabama administration. she said that Shula had a meeting with the Trustees and they told him they were willing to give one more year but he would need to make some coaching changes. He says that he is the coach any changes would be his decision. Shula goes home and tells his wife about the meeting and she chew out his a$$ and tells him to get back down there and tell them he will do whatever they think his right! LOLLLL I guess he did not take the advice very well cause he is gone. The Tide led the SEC in getting to the red zone and finished third to last in the COUNTRY in conversions. Crying shame the coaching job that was done with the talent they have at the skill positions. I was not happy when they brought him in, what did he ever do except accept the seed of a coaching legend. No head coaching experience and was an average player. Most of the time looked lost on the sideline and the coaching in the Auburn game was just the final straw. We SHOULD be able to get a decent coach, it has been a while now!!!!

Thanks for showing what better football was in the Sugar Bowl last year. For your information, Jack OFF....those losses by the BE top teams came within the conference. Man, we get all kinds on this board. Some real scholars.

I think Alabama needed another coach but they fired the wrong one. Since taking over as Athlectics Director, COACH MOORE had handled just about everything from the NCAA investigation and following probation to the selecting and or firing of coaches like a man who is lost. I'm sure he is great at Alumni functions, telling stories about his days coaching with the Bear, but as Director of Athlectics he has been a disaster. The way he handled this latest incident, firing your head coach in the middle of the night, only adds to his list of mistakes. Just my opinion Bama fans but maybe it is one that needs to be looked at MOORE closely!??!

Mal Moore, Director of Athletics

Opening Statement
?As we announced this morning in a press release, I have informed Mike Shula that he will not be retained as head football coach at the University of Alabama. Mike and his staff took over our program during a trying period four years ago and in a number of ways Mike has been an excellent representative of our program. He personally has displayed impeccable character as both a player and as a head coach. Mike has made tremendous contributions to our program and we will always be grateful for his efforts. He has provided stability through four years of NCAA probation which ends on February 1, 2007. However, we did not make progress on the field this season and have been unable to maintain the positive momentum necessary to return Alabama football to a championship level. We will immediately begin a national search for a new football coach and will seek an individual with a proven record of achievement who can reach the level of excellence that all of us desire.?

On speaking to the players
?I did speak to the players at 12 p.m. today over in the Bryant Academic Center. I visited with them about this decision that was made by myself and the administration of this University. I have asked the players to band together as a team with oneness in their efforts academically, to support each other, to maintain there schedules in the weight room and in workouts. We do feel we have an opportunity for a bowl game. We want the players and our coaches to prepare in anticipation of this game.?

On decision and contract implications
?You are never comfortable with a situation like this. It was a very difficult time for me and a difficult decision without question. His buyout I assured coach that it would be followed to the letter. That his contract calls for and as is in all of his assistant coaches contracts. We will see this through as stated in their contracts.?

On decision after evaluating coach Shula
?After every season we evaluate in all sports. We try to see and dig through the strengths and weaknesses of the program, what needs to happen and what needs to take place. This is the process we have followed there. My responsibility is to report to the president of the University and to make a decision of whether to make a change and we did.?

On when the decision was made
?Through the season you are in full support of your coaches and the players. The players are so important in all of this. There is no question that middle on we talked about the evaluation that is always done at the end of the season, Mike and I did. That was carried out.?

On coaching search
?I can say that I have not talked with any coach regarding this job but that process will begin in the next day or so. We will start forming the list and ranking who we want to go after in what order.?

On if he plans to look at the college or pro level for a coach
?I don?t want to close it out anywhere. It is open and is a national search as I stated earlier. I do want a coach with a proven ability of success that we feel can take us to a championship level.?

On process of his decision
?I will say that through our process that we talked about from the end of the season on. We talked about earlier that my job was also to do an evaluation. I did meet with the president, chancellor and a couple of our board of trustees late Sunday afternoon and the decision was made. I told coach Shula the first opportunity I had to talk with him.?

Closing Statement
?As we go down this process to locate and secure the coach, I will do so in a low-key manor. The majority of the coaches will be involved in bowl games or in the extended part of their seasons. I respect their ability there to work with their teams. This will take time. Hopefully when you see me again I will be introducing a new coach.?

Not a Bama fan but lost some money on them this year and every game I watched I wondered if Shula was brain dead or just clueless??
