mike tyson fight

I was watching tyson's fight last night and I had a question. The whole match, he was biting the thumb of his gloves. I have never seen a fighter do that before. Does anyone know why a fighter would do this? I would think it is illegal as you can rip the gloves and scratch the other person

It was a nervous reaction to him getting his ass kicked.
