You never know which Terp team will show up. Lately, it's been the gang of ugly step-sisters. Stupid turnovers, bad shots, missed opportunities . . . they've mastered them all. James Gist has started games fast but has petered out due to problems with muscle cramps in his legs. If he can overcome this and the Terps can keep their heads about them for an entire game, they should win. But that's a big IF. The same team that beat North Carolina might show up . . . but then again. . . that turtle hasn't shown his head in a while.
I'll take the Terps +3, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Gophers plan on playing lots of underclassmen tonight.

Underclassmen to lead Minnesota Gophers against Maryland in NIT
Hoffarber, Nolen to run team in NIT

Tubby Smith could give fans a glimpse into next season with his rotation in tonight's National Invitation Tournament first-round game.

Sharpshooting freshman Blake Hoffarber, who hit the game-winning, off-balance buzzer beater to upset Indiana in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals last week, likely will start.

So will fellow freshman guard Al Nolen Jr., who has shown flashes of his potential to run the team.

Also, expect junior big man Jon Williams to get an opportunity to prove he can provide an inside presence as senior Spencer Tollackson nurses a sore ankle.

If the fourth-seeded Gophers (20-13) make a run in the NIT, starting tonight against fifth-seeded Maryland (18-14) at Williams Arena, then it probably would be because of the underclassmen.

Smith said he already is excited about the future.

"They have grown and they have improved," he said. "They've listened and have learned their lesson well. They were easier to mold and reshape than the veteran players."

Tollackson hasn't fully recovered from an injury sustained in the Big Ten tournament's opening round Thursday against Northwestern. Senior guard Lawrence McKenzie also has a slightly injured foot and missed Monday's practice, Smith said.

That means more playing time for Williams and Hoffarber. Sophomore Lawrence Westbrook, who has started every game this season, also will have to pick up some scoring slack, as he did with a career-high 17 points against Northwestern.

"I think
everybody has to step up right now and next year if we want to get to that next level," Westbrook said. "Basically, I feel like a junior now because it's so late in the season. Blake and Al are pretty much sophomores. They're going to be a lot more experienced next year, so I think everybody's carrying more of a load."
Minnesota's coaches have called sophomore Damian Johnson the team's most consistent defensive player this season, and he has shown he can score, too.

Hoffarber was the hero of the Indiana game, but Johnson scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Gophers.

The 6-foot-7 forward said his confidence will pay off next season, but he doesn't want to look that far.

"I just felt comfortable out there," he said. "I'm still not quite focused on next year, but there's some good upside. I can see a lot of potential there."
