Lights out, then back on at MU stadium

At 6:52 p.m., a little more than an hour before the scheduled kickoff between Missouri and Nebraska, the field lights and power to the main scoreboard went out.

A roar of surprise went up from the several thousand already in the student section on the east side of Memorial Stadium. The secondary scoreboard in the south end zone remained functional.

MU officials in the press box said power outtage affected much of the University of Missouri campus. Indeed, no lights showed in two high-rise dormitories north across Stadium Blvd.

Oddly, lights over the upper deck exits remained lit, providing just enough illumination for the Nebraska and Missouri' kicking teams to continue pre-game warmups. At 7:05, the stadium lights flickered back on.

The lights take some 20 minutes or so to reach full brilliance. But with more than 50 minutes remaining before an 8:01 p.m. kickoff, pending no further problems, the start of the game should not be delayed.
