Red Sox hand Os team-record 112th loss
September 26, 2018
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Shortly after their playoff spot was assured, the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 on Albert Almora Jr.'s single with two outs in the 10th inning Wednesday night.

The NL Central-leading Cubs clinched their fourth straight postseason appearance when Milwaukee beat St. Louis. The Brewers, who sealed a playoff slot with their win, are a half-game behind Chicago. One of them will win the NL Central, the other will play in the NL wild-card game.

After Pittsburgh tied it in the ninth on a two-out, two-run double by Starling Marte, the Cubs bounced back to win. Ian Happ led off the 10th with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Terrance Gore. Mike Freeman's sacrifice moved up Gore, and he took third on a groundout. Almora singled to left on an 0-2 pitch from Richard Rodriguez (4-3).

Jason Heyward homered and drove in three runs for the Cubs. Javier Baez singled for his NL-leading 111th RBI as the Cubs won after blowing a five-run lead. Star third baseman Kris Bryant didn't play because of a bruised left wrist. Jose Osuna and Corey Dickerson homered for Pittsburgh.

Brandon Kintzler (3-3) got the only batter he faced in the top of the 10th to hit into a double play.

BREWERS 2, CARDINALS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Milwaukee clinched its first playoff spot since 2011 by ensuring at least a spot in the NL wild-card game, helped when a rookie St. Louis pinch-runner fell on his way to the plate.

Jhoulys Chacin pitched five shutout innings and Travis Shaw hit a pair of RBI singles to help the Brewers completed a three-game sweep.

The Cardinals missed a big chance to tie it in the eighth inning. Matt Carpenter walked and was lifted for pinch-runner Adolis Garcia. Jose Martinez then hit a slow roller to third baseman Mike Moustakas, who threw wildly to first. Garcia was waved home but fell halfway to the plate, allowing second baseman Hernan Perez to easily throw him out to end the inning.

Chacin (15-8), who had lost his last three decisions, gave up one run on just one hit over five innings. Xavier Cedeno, Corbin Burnes, Josh Hader and Jeremy Jeffress combined for four shutout innings as the Brewers held the Cardinals to a season-low two hits. Jeffress earned his 13th save in 18 chances.

Chasen Shreve (3-4) took the loss.

RED SOX 19, ORIOLES 3, 1ST GAME

ORIOLES 10, RED SOX 3, 2ND GAME

BOSTON (AP) - Boston's Chris Sale struck out eight over 4 2/3 innings in his final tuneup for an expected start in the AL Division Series opener before Baltimore salvaged a split of the day-night doubleheader.

In the opener, Boston handed the Orioles a franchise-record 112th loss. A major league-best 107-52, Boston opens the Division Series at home Oct. 5 against the New York Yankees or Oakland.

Sale left after giving up Adam Jones' go-ahead, RBI double that made it 3-2 in the fifth. He threw 92 pitches, allowing three runs and four hits.

Trey Mancini had a tiebreaking two-run single off Matt Barnes (6-4) in a three-run seventh and drove in three runs. Tanner Scott (3-2) worked 2 2/3 innings of one-run relief, and Paul Fry pitched three hitless innings for his second save.

In the opener, J.D. Martinez had three of Boston's season-high 22 hits, including a three-run homer that brought his major league-leading RBIs total to 127. The Orioles (46-112) broke the franchise loss mark set by the 1939 St. Louis Browns went 43-111.

David Price (16-7) settled down after an early stumble in his final tuneup before the playoffs. He allowed three runs - all in the second inning - six hits and three walks, striking out six before leaving with a 10-3 lead after five. Price is expected to start Game 2 of the AL Division Series against the New York Yankees or Oakland.

Rafael Devers had four hits and six RBIs, including two homers, and Mookie Betts had two hits to raise his major league-best batting average to .346. Xander Bogaerts and Blake Swihart also homered for Boston.

Renato Nunez and Trey Mancini homered for Baltimore. Ryan Meisinger (2-1) was the loser.

RAYS 8, YANKEES 7

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Masahiro Tanaka gave up four runs and six hits over four-plus innings in his final start before the playoffs in New York's loss to Tampa.

New York started play with a 2 1/2-game lead over Oakland to host the AL wild-card game and has the tiebreaker. The Athletics played at Seattle later Wednesday night. Yankees manager Aaron Boone hasn't decided if Tanaka, JA Happ or Luis Severino will start against Oakland.

A four-run, ninth-inning rally by the Yankees came up just short against Sergio Romo, who got the final four outs for his 24th save.

Tanaka (12-6) was coming off a four-inning start last Thursday in which he allowed five runs and eight hits as the Yankees lost 11-6 to Boston.

Tampa Bay center fielder Kevin Kiermaier was hit by Tanaka's pitch in the first and left two innings later with what X-rays determined was a hairline fracture of the right foot.

Reliever Yonny Chirinos (5-5) went four scoreless innings.

Neil Walker hit a three-run homer for New York.

NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 3, 7 INNINGS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bryce Harper was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in the rain-shortened game that many expect was his last at Nationals Park as a Washington player.

Harper can become a free agent at season's end. The storm arrived as Harper stood in the on-deck circle while the last out of the seventh was recorded.

Nationals rookie Victor Robles had a career-high four hits, including a three-run homer and a two-run double, and also stole a base. Brian Anderson homered for the Marlins.

Wander Suero (4-1) got the win with an inning of scoreless relief. Wei-Yin Chen (6-12) was the loser.

ROCKIES 14, PHILLIES 0

DENVER (AP) - Hard-throwing German Marquez started with eight straight strikeouts to match a modern-era big league record, and Colorado routed Philadelphia to pad its lead for final NL final wild-card spot.

David Dahl homered for the third straight game, and the Rockies went deep four times in all as they extending their winning streak to six.

Colorado opened a 1 1/2-game advantage over St. Louis for the last NL playoff berth and remained in contention to win its first NL West title.

Marquez (14-10) allowed three hits in seven innings and struck out 11 to set a Rockies record with 221 for the season, seven more than Ubaldo Jimenez's total in 2010. By striking out his first eight batters, he tied a post-1900 mark set by Houston's Jim Deshaies in 1986, and equaled by the New York Mets' Jacob deGrom in 2014. The overall record of nine was set by New York's Mickey Welch in an NL game in 1884.

Nick Pivetta (7-14) was the loser.

BLUE JAYS 3, ASTROS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Toronto gave outgoing manager John Gibbons a winning home sendoff against celebrating Houston.

Before the game, Toronto general manager Ross Atkins announced that Gibbons will not return next season. After getting the final out, closer Ken Giles gave the ball to Gibbons and the crowd rose for a standing ovation.

The World Series champion Astros clinched the AL West title when Oakland lost in extra innings at Seattle well past midnight Tuesday. Several of the Astros partied at a hotel meeting room, but they held a more traditional clubhouse celebration despite the loss. Houston will open the best-of-five Division Series matchup against Cleveland at home on Oct. 5.

Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer and rookie Reese McGuire added a solo shot for Toronto. Grichuk connected off right-hander Chris Devenski in the first, his career-best 25th home run. McGuire led off the fifth with a blast to right, the first of his big league career.

Joe Biagini (4-7) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win and Giles, the seventh Toronto pitcher, needed just five pitches to wrap it up in the ninth, earning his 25th save in 25 opportunities. Devenski (2-3) allowed two runs and one hit in two innings.

METS 3, BRAVES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Jacob deGrom was dominant in what likely was his final pitch for the NL Cy Young Award, throwing eight stellar innings for New York and leaving with a major league-best 1.70 ERA.

DeGrom (10-9) made his final regular-season start, striking out 10 and allowing just two singles against NL East champion Atlanta. He retired the final 20 hitters after allowing a single to Johan Camargo. DeGrom gave up no more than three runs in his last 29 starts to extend his own single-season record. The All-Star ace also matched the overall mark set by Jake Arrieta in 2015-16.

Seth Lugo threw a scoreless ninth for his third save.

Luke Jackson (1-2) was the loser. Atlanta had won six straight.

INDIANS 10, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Shane Bieber remained perfect on the road with six scoreless innings, Francisco Lindor led off the game with a home run and Cleveland beat up Chicago.

Bieber (11-5) improved to 7-0 on the road, setting a single-season record with most road wins without a loss by a Cleveland pitcher. The 23-year-old rookie has yet to lose a road game in 11 career starts.

Edwin Encarnacion was 3 for 4 with a three-run homer and drove in four runs for the AL Central champs.

Kevan Smith broke up the shutout with an RBI single with one out in the ninth off reliever Oliver Perez. Adam Engel also added an RBI single off Adam Cimber.

Jace Fry (2-3) was the loser.

ROYALS 6, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Rookie Heath Fillmyer struck out a career-high nine, Adalberto Mondesi tripled, stole two bases and scored twice, and Kansas City beat Cincinnati to wrap up its road schedule.

Whit Merrifield, who went into the game tied for the American League lead in hits and leading in stolen bases, extended his season-high hitting streak to 16 games with a third-inning single. He also stole two bases. Alex Gordon tacked on a solo home run.

The only run Fillmyer allowed was Jose Peraza's 14th homer in the first inning. Fillmyer (4-2) allowed four hits and two walks while tying his career high with 7 1/3 innings. Fillmyer also had his first major league hit and RBI with a sixth-inning double. Cody Reed (1-3) was the loser.

TWINS 11, TIGERS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Johnny Field homered twice, Jorge Polanco hit a bases-loaded triple and Minnesota beat Detroit.

Tyler Austin also homered and Willians Astudillo had three hits for the Twins. Christin Stewart tripled and drove in two runs for the Tigers.

Tyler Duffey (2-2) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Detroit starter Matthew Boyd (9-13) gave up six runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..

13) Baseball season ends Sunday; every major league game will start at 3pm ET, to make it more interesting for teams competing in the pennant races. Interesting idea they?ve been doing for a while now.

12) Now this is a rivalry; Giants? P Madison Bumgarner asked for his last start of the year to be pushed back to Friday, so he can pitch against the Dodgers and hopefully knock them out of the playoff race.

11) Congrats to Felix Hernandez; the Mariners? pitcher became an American citizen Tuesday, so good for him!!! His teammate Hector Cruz will join him as an American citizen next week.

10) Mariners? OF/2B Dee Gordon has batted 585 times this season; he?s walked nine times, and has an on-base %age of only .288.

9) Vince Velasquez has started 30 games for the Phillies this year, but pitched total of only 146.1 IP, the least IP per start ever by someone who started 20+ games.

8) As recently as five years ago, 36 major league pitchers threw 200+ innings; so far this season, only eight pitchers have thrown 200+, with two or three more expected to get there by the end of the week, when the regular season ends. More and more, pitchers are getting coddled.

7) Bears? 16-14 win in Arizona Sunday was a big win for them; from 2014-17, Chicago was 8-21 in games decided by 7 or fewer points. Finding a way to win is important.

6) Speaking of which, Arizona Cardinals were 21-12-1 under former coach Bruce Arians in games decided by 7 or fewer points. Would?ve been interesting to see Arians work with rookie QB Josh Rosen, who makes his first start Sunday against the Seahawks.

5) All-time record for most home runs hit on the road by one team in a season is 138, set by the 2001 San Francisco Giants. A?s have 132 homers on road this year, with three games left.

4) Phillies lost their first three games in Denver this week by a combined score of 34-4; not a gutty effort by this team, who seem to have packed it in under rookie manager Gabe Kapler.

Colorado won, Dodgers lost Wednesday, so Rockies are in first place in NL West, and Dodgers lead St Louis by a game for the second Wild Card spot. Brewers/Cubs clinched playoff spots last nite.

3) If I ain?t startin?, then I?m departin???.Clemson QB Kelly Bryant is leaving the school, after the Tigers named freshman Trevor Lawrence the starter for the rest of this season.

New rule they put in this year; you can red-shirt as long as you play in only four of fewer games, which is where Bryant is now? he can play one year somewhere else down the road.

2) Tennessee Titans WR Richard Matthews was a no-show at practice on Wednesday, then told a local media outlet that he plans to ?move on? from the team.

Matthews texted this to a media person Wednesday night: ?Everything is good! Just wasn?t happy with what was going on barely getting any playing time. It was time to move on.?

So far this season, Matthews has caught three passes for 11 yards; he caught 53 passes for 795 yards in 2017, when Tennessee had a different coaching staff.

1) Happy 73rd birthday to Dave Duncan, former catcher/pitching coach who won two World Series rings with the A?s? he was one of the best pitching coaches ever.

LEADING OFF: Rockies, Cubs try to improve playoff position
September 27, 2018
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors on Thursday:

ROCK `EM

Colorado has won six in row, boosting its playoff position. The NL West leaders aim for a four-game sweep when they take on the Phillies at Coors Field, having outscored them 34-4 so far in the series. Antonio Senzatela (6-6, 4.52 ERA) starts for the Rockies against Jake Arrieta (10-10, 3.94).

The Rockies' 14-0 romp Wednesday night moved them a half-game past the Los Angeles Dodgers for the division lead. They're also 1 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis for the second NL wild-card spot.

HOLDING ON

Lefty Jon Lester and the Chicago Cubs try to maintain their lead in the NL Central when they host Pittsburgh at Wrigley Field. The Cubs have a half-game edge over Milwaukee, which is idle. Chicago and Brewers both have clinched playoff spots, so one will win the division and the other will be in the all-or-nothing wild-card game. Lester (17-6, 3.43 ERA) is 5-1 with a 1.96 ERA in his last seven starts. The Cubs will see how star third baseman Kris Bryant is feeing - he didn't play Wednesday night because of a bruised left wrist, the result of being hit by a pitch the previous day.

CAUGHT SHORT

The NL East champion Braves will find out if there's any update on shortstop Dansby Swanson. The team said Wednesday that he has a partially torn ligament in his left hand, putting his postseason status in jeopardy. Swanson won't play the rest of the regular season, which ends Sunday. The Braves open the best-of-five NL Division Series on Oct. 4.

The 24-year-old Swanson was on the disabled list in May and missed 13 games with left wrist inflammation. He is batting .238 with 14 home runs and 59 RBIs and is considered a candidate to be a Gold Glove finalist.

TUNE UP

Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole (15-5, 2.92) gets loose when he pitches at Baltimore. His following start will come in the Division Series when AL West champion Houston takes on Cleveland. Cole has 272 strikeouts, teammate Justin Verlander leads the league with 280.

Friday?s six-pack

Before last night?s NFL game, most likely Super Bowl matchups (from 5Dimes.com):

6) Chargers-Rams- risk $100 to win $3,450

5) Chiefs-Eagles, $3,375

4) Steelers-Rams, $2,495

3) Jaguars-Rams, $1,680

2) Patriots-Rams, $1,360

1) Chiefs-Rams, $1,255

Quote of the Day
?The other side gives scholarships, too.?
Former football coach Lou Holtz to a sideline reporter, when asked why a game was closer than expected at halftime

Friday?s quiz
Before the Texas Rangers became the Texas Rangers, where did they play home games?

Thursday?s quiz
The Sun Bowl is held in El Paso, TX every December.

Wednesday?s quiz
Walter Mondale was Vice President when Jimmy Carter was President.

*************************

Friday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??

13) Rams 38, Vikings 31? Scouting in football is very important:

? Rams WR Cooper Kupp went to college at Eastern Washington.
? Vikings WR Adam Theilen went to college at Mankato State.

Two damn good players; teams with really good scouts found them.

12) Oklahoma Sooners had the ball for only 15:19 vs Army last week, Sooners? lowest TOP in any game since at least 1995.

11) Cleveland Indians will end the regular season with a winning record against their division, but a losing record against everyone else; they?re first playoff team to do that since the 2009 Minnesota Twins, who got swept in the ALDS.

10) Last week, Seattle RB Chris Carson carried the ball 32 times, most by any Seahawk since Week 12 of 2006, when Shaun Alexander carried it 40 times.

9) Since Bill Lazor became the Bengals? OC, only Tom Brady, Russell Wilson have thrown more TD passes than Cincy QB Andy Dalton.

8) Elsewhere?..Denver Broncos? TE Jake Butt tore his ACL and is expected to miss the remainder of the season; he got hurt going thru what basically was a walk-thru. Freak injury

7) Actor John Hurt has died in 45 different movies, making him the unofficial leader in on-screen deaths.

6) This from Darren Rovell of ESPN:

20 years ago, when Mark McGwire hit his 70th home run of the year for the Cardinals, Phil Ozersky, a fan making $30,000 a year, caught the baseball. Cardinals asked him for the ball in exchange for a signed bat, ball and jersey. Ozersky said he also wants to meet McGwire. McGwire declined.

Three months later, Ozersky sold ball for $3.05M. Thats million, with an M.

5) Former NBA star Amare Stoudemire is still playing basketball, for a pro team in Israel that is also the co-owner of.

4) Rockies 5, Phillies 3? Philly went 0-8 on their road trip, their worst road trip since 1883. Thats 18-83, not 19-83.

On August 5, Phillies were 63-48 and stop the NL East after beating the Marlins; they?re 15-33 since then.

3) Thursday afternoon, in the midst of an 12-1 blowout of Tampa Bay, CC Sabathia drilled Jesus Sucre of the Rays, in retaliation for an inside pitch a Tampa pitcher had thrown earlier. Sabathia was ejected from the game, leaving him two innings short of a $500,000 innings bonus.

Will they give him the $500K for being a good teammate?

2) Miami 47, North Carolina 10? Maybe the UNC players shouldn?t sell the sneakers/gear they get for free, then they wouldn?t get suspended, then their team wouldn?t get whacked just about every week. Miami came in struggling, but had a big night here.

1) Weird stat: in the 57-year history of the Mets, Jacob deGrom may become the first Mets pitcher ever to finish the season with a 10-9 record.

LEADING OFF: Cards vs Cubs, Rockies-Nats highlight weekend
September 27, 2018
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors on Friday:

WRIGLEY FIELD SHOWDOWN

Right-hander Kyle Hendricks (13-11) starts for the Chicago Cubs in the opener of their big season-ending series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Right-hander Adam Wainwright will be on the mound for the Cardinals. While the Cubs have clinched a postseason berth, they are still in the chase for the NL Central title, holding a one-game lead over Milwaukee. St. Louis, shaken after getting swept in a three-game series at Milwaukee, is one game behind the Dodgers for the NL's second wild card, with Los Angeles one game back of the Brewers. Hendricks is 4-1 with a 1.37 ERA in his last six starts.

HEADING UP INTERSTATE 94

Milwaukee also has clinched no worse than a wild-card berth and will be sending right-hander Zach Davies (2-7) to the mound against Detroit. The Brewers are 4-8 in his starts, and opposing batters have a robust .267 batting average against him, well above the major league average.

MILE HIGH

Left-hander Kyle Freeland (16-7) is on the mile-high mound at Coors Field for streaking Colorado in the start of a season-ending series against the Washington Nationals. Colorado has won seven straight, matching its longest winning streak this season, and opened a one-game lead over the second-place Dodgers in the NL West.

OLD RIVALS

The Dodgers close the regular season at the San Francisco Giants and start left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-3), who allowed four hits over six scoreless innings last weekend at San Diego. In his last outing against the Giants, Ryu gave up three hits in six scoreless innings.

WHAT'S LEFT IN THE AL

Not much is left to be decided in the AL, where East champion Boston hosts the wild-card winner, the New York Yankees or Oakland, in Division Series opener on Oct. 5 and West champion Houston is home against Central winner Cleveland as the Astros seek their second straight World Series title. New York needs one win or one Athletics loss during the season's final weekend to ensure the wild-card game will be played at Yankee Stadium. Left-hander J.A. Happ (16-6, including 6-0 with the Yankees) is scheduled to start Friday night at Boston, which lines him up to pitch against Oakland on regular rest. A's right-hander Mike Fiers (12-7) is slated to pitch Friday at the Los Angeles Angels.

Friday's Diamond Notes
September 27, 2018
By Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Rockies (7-0 last seven)

Colorado began August by losing seven of nine games to slip to 60-55 and 3 ? games behind both Arizona and Los Angeles for the top spot in the NL West. Since that rough stretch, the Rockies have won 29 of 44 contests to move into first place in the division, capped off by a four-game sweep of the Phillies. Colorado outscored Philadelphia, 39-7 in the four victories, while improving to 11-3 in its past 14 games at Coors Field.

The Rockies own a one-game edge over the Dodgers heading into Friday?s action as the disappointing Nationals invade Denver. Kyle Freeland has been Colorado?s hottest pitcher over the last two months as the Rockies have compiled an impressive 14-2 mark in his past 16 starts, while the NL West leaders are 9-0 in his previous nine home outings. The Rockies grabbed three of four from the Nationals in D.C. back in April, including a 2-1 win started by Freeland in the second game of the series.

Coldest team: Phillies (0-8 last eight)

Things change quickly in baseball as the Phillies were 64-49 on August 7 and on top of the NL East race. Heading into the final weekend of the season, Philadelphia not only has nothing to play for, but are going to finish with a losing record. The Phillies had an outside chance of catching the Braves for the top spot in the division last weekend, but were swept in a four-game series, then put up a real clunker in four losses at Colorado.

Philadelphia posted a 14-32 record in the last 46 games, as the only team who put together a worse mark in this stretch is Baltimore, a team that has lost 112 games. The Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park trying to end the season on a positive note, taking on the division champion Braves. Jerad Eickhoff makes his first start of the season for Philadelphia after compiling a 4-8 record and 4.71 ERA in 2017.

Hottest pitcher: Mike Fiers, Athletics (12-7, 3.31 ERA)

Oakland made two of the shrewdest moves this past summer by picking up Fiers and Edwin Jackson to help out its rotation. When those two right-handers start for the A?s, Oakland owns an incredible 22-4 record this season, including an 8-1 mark in Fiers? nine starts. Unfortunately, only three of those starts came on the highway as Oakland is 2-1 in those road outings, including a loss at Tampa Bay in his most recent away appearance. Fiers faced the Angels in late May as a member of the Tigers as he allowed one earned run in 5.2 innings of a 6-1 victory as a heavy home underdog.

Coldest pitcher: Wade Leblanc, Mariners (8-5, 3.55 ERA)

Leblanc has put together a solid season for a banged-up Seattle pitching rotation. However, Leblanc hasn?t had much luck when pitching at Safeco Field as the Mariners are winless in his past four home starts, including recent losses to last-place squads Baltimore and San Diego. The southpaw takes on another cellar dweller when Texas visits Seattle on Friday as the Rangers tagged Leblanc for eight hits and three runs in five innings of a 6-1 win in Arlington last Sunday.

Biggest OVER run: Nationals (4-0 last four)

Washington needs to win one of its final three games of the season to finish with a winning record, but the Nats will be missing the playoffs for the first time since 2015. The Nationals? offense has stepped up of late as Bryce Harper?s future is in question with the All-Star outfielder headed to free agency this winter. Washington has plated at least six runs in five straight games, while putting up nine runs in each of the past two games in blowouts of Miami. Joe Ross takes the mound for Washington as the right-hander has seen the UNDER cash in his first two starts.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (12-0 last 12)

Cincinnati?s offense is closing the season with a dud by scoring three runs or less in 13 of its last 14 games, while dropping five straight games to Miami and Kansas City. The last time the Reds scored more than four runs in a game came back on September 10 against the Dodgers, as Cincinnati?s lineup looks to bust out against Pittsburgh this weekend. The Reds have lost six consecutive matchups with the Pirates, while getting limited to six runs in a three-game sweep at PNC Park earlier this month. Right-hander Anthony DeSclafani is coming off three straight losses, but the Reds have scored a total of two runs in those defeats.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Giants

Last October, Los Angeles hosted Game 7 of the World Series and ultimately lost to Houston. Now, the Dodgers are one bad weekend away from not even qualifying for the playoffs this time around as L.A. sits one game behind Colorado in the NL West. However, the Dodgers are currently sitting in the final Wild Card spot, one game ahead of the Cardinals as Los Angeles heads north to San Francisco to face the rival Giants.

The Dodgers dropped the final two games of their series at Arizona to fall out of first place, but L.A. has compiled a terrific 11-1 record in its last 12 away series openers. Hyun-Jin Ryu is coming off a pair of scoreless efforts in home wins over the Rockies and Padres, while striking out 13 batters and walking none in 13 innings. The Dodgers are 1-1 in Ryu?s two starts against the Giants this season, as the southpaw tossed six scoreless innings in a 4-3 victory at Chavez Ravine in mid-August.

The Giants have faltered in September by going 5-18, including an 11-game losing streak to start the month. Staff ace Madison Bumgarner has a long history with the Dodgers that includes several benches-clearing incidents, as the Giants cashed with the southpaw starting in a 5-2 win on August 13 as a +180 road underdog. San Francisco has won six of Bumgarner?s previous eight starts at AT&T Park, while not allowing a run in his last three home outings (20 innings).

Betcha didn?t know: The Marlins need three victories to finish OVER their season win total, meaning they need a three-game sweep of the Mets at Citi Field. Since Miami?s Jose Urena beaned Atlanta?s Ronald Acuna, Jr. on August 15 on the first pitch of the game, the Marlins are 5-1 in the right-hander?s last six starts, including three road victories. It?s a great turnaround for Urena, as the Marlins lost his first 12 outings of the season.

Biggest public favorite: Brewers (-210) vs. Tigers

Biggest public underdog: Red Sox (+110) vs. Yankees

Hendricks, Bryant help Cubs beat Cardinals 8-4
September 28, 2018
By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) The NL West-leading Colorado Rockies locked up a playoff berth for the second straight season, beating the Washington Nationals 5-2 on Friday night for their eighth win in a row behind a resilient start from Kyle Freeland.

David Dahl homered for the fifth consecutive game and Ian Desmond hit a two-run homer against his former team to help Colorado clinch at least a wild card with two games remaining. The Rockies entered the night with a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers as they try to wrap up the franchise's first division crown.

Wade Davis struck out Bryce Harper looking to end the game and earn his 43rd save. The sellout crowd at Coors Field roared and fireworks went off.

The Rockies are headed to the postseason in back-to-back years for the first time in team history. This is their fifth playoff trip since the franchise began in 1993 - last year, they lost to Arizona in the NL wild-card game.

Freeland (17-7) wiggled out of jam after jam on a cool night to finish the season with a 2.40 ERA in games at the hitter-friendly ballpark. The lefty allowed two runs and 11 hits over six innings before turning it over to a staunch bullpen.

Joe Ross (0-2) allowed four runs over five innings in his third start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. Charlie Blackmon had a solo homer in the Rockies third.

YANKEES 11, RED SOX 6

BOSTON (AP) - New York clinched home-field advantage for the AL wild-card game, hitting four homers to tie the major league single-season record and beat Boston.

Aaron Judge hit his first homer since coming off the disabled list Sept. 14, and Gary Sanchez, Aaron Hicks and Luke Voit also homered to match the mark of 264 set by the 1997 Seattle Mariners.

The win in the opener of the three-game series settled the AL's last remaining postseason question with two games to go. The Yankees will host Oakland on Wednesday, with the winner playing Boston.

The Red Sox, who clinched the best record in baseball with a franchise-record 107 wins, were hoping to make things difficult for their archrivals - and the Athletics, too - by forcing the winner of the wild-card game to have to fly cross-country next week. The ALDS begins in Boston on Friday.

J.A. Happ (17-6) pitched three perfect innings and allowed just one hit through five. Staked to an 8-0 lead, he loaded the bases in the sixth for Steve Pearce's grand slam, but got Rafael Devers on a groundout to end the inning. Brian Johnson (4-5) was the loser.

CUBS 8, CARDINALS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Hendricks went eight innings in another strong start, Kris Bryant homered and Chicago moved closer to the NL Central championship and dealt another hit to St. Louis' playoff hopes.

The Cubs came into the final weekend of the regular season with a franchise-record fourth straight trip to the postseason assured and their third division title in a row in sight. They maintained a one-game lead over Milwaukee, with the Brewers beating Detroit on Friday night.

St. Louis dropped its fourth in a row after being swept by Milwaukee. The Cardinals came in trailing Los Angeles by a game for the second wild card, with the Dodgers visiting San Francisco.

Hendricks (14-11) gave up two runs and seven hits. He's 5-1 with a 1.52 ERA in his past seven outings.

Bryant made it 3-0 with a long solo drive to center against Adam Wainwright (2-4) for just his second homer in 27 games. The 2016 NL MVP sat out the previous two because of a bruised left wrist and has two stints on the disabled list this season because of left shoulder inflammation.

Daniel Murphy had two hits, two runs and an RBI. He singled and scored in a two-run first, doubled and came around in the fifth, and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

BREWERS 6, TIGERS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun hit two homers, the second a a solo shot in the eighth inning that bounced off right fielder Nicholas Castellanos' glove and over the fence, and Milwaukee beat Detroit to keep pace with the NL Central-leading Cubs.

Already assured a playoff spot, the second-place Brewers (93-67) stayed one game back of Chicago, with two games left in the regular season.

Braun also hit a solo homer in the first and doubled in the fifth. He benefited from bad luck in the eighth for Castellanos, who was tracking the high fly to the wall to his left. But the ball bounced off the glove raised over his head, then rolled over the top of the padded fence for a homer off Victor Alcantara (1-1).

Jeremy Jeffress hit leadoff batter Jacoby Jones with a pitch in the forearm to lead off the ninth before retiring the next three Tigers for his 14th save. Joakim Soria (2-1) got the win after getting the last two outs of the eighth in relief of Hader.

TWINS 2, WHITE SOX 1, 1ST GAME

TWINS 12, WHITE SOX 4, 2ND GAME

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Berrios became the first Minnesota pitcher in eight years to reach 200 strikeouts, throwing seven smooth innings against Chicago in the first game of a doubleheader sweep.

Mitch Garver had a career-high six RBIs in the second game.

Berrios (12-11) finished his All-Star season with a career-best 3.84 ERA and 202 strikeouts. The last time a Twins pitcher topped that milestone was Francisco Liriano (201) in 2010, with Johan Santana (235) in 2007 the most recent prior to that. Berrios struck out nine batters, allowing just three hits and one run on Leury Garcia's RBI single in the third.

Joe Mauer, playing possibly the final games of his career with an expiring contract and a pending decision about whether to retire at age 35, went 2 for 4 in each game.

Chase DeJong (1-1) was the winner in the night game. Reynaldo Lopez (7-10) was the loser in the opener, and Lucas Giolito (10-13) dropped the second.

INDIANS 14, ROYALS 6

KANSAS CITY (AP) - Josh Donaldson hit a grand slam and double during a 10-run seventh inning, powering Cleveland past Kansas City.

The AL Central champion Indians improved to 90-70, marking the third time in team history they've won at least 90 in three straight years.

Jason Kipnis' homer in the Cleveland third was the game's only run in the first six innings.

But the Indians then broke loose against Ian Kennedy (3-9) for their first 10-run inning since doing it on Sept. 30, 2012, against the Royals in Cleveland.

Mike Clevinger (13-8) was the winner.

Brian Goodwin hit a grand slam for the Royals in the ninth off Adam Plutko. Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

ASTROS 2, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Gerrit Cole tuned up for the postseason by pitching six sharp innings, and Houston got a home run from Josh Reddick in the Astros' victory over Baltimore.

The Astros close out the regular season at Camden Yards this weekend after clinching the AL West title on Tuesday night. Houston opens the playoffs at home against Cleveland on Oct. 5.

Cole gave up one run, five hits and a walk. His four strikeouts gave him 276 for the season, and he reached 200 innings for the third time in his career.

Marwin Gonzalez put Houston in front with a bases-loaded single in the eighth off Tanner Scott (3-3).

Tony Sipp (3-1) and Collin McHugh each pitched one inning before Roberto Osuna worked the ninth for his 21st save.

BRAVES 10, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Freddie Freeman hit three doubles in a four-hit performance and drove in three runs, and Atlanta routed Philadelphis to keep up its push for home-field advantage in the playoffs.

The NL East champion Braves improved to 90-70, coming off three straight seasons of at least 90 losses. They will face the NL West champion in the best-of-five Division Series.

Johan Camargo, who homered, and Ronald Acuna Jr. each had three hits for Atlanta. Mike Foltynewicz (13-10) pitched five strong innings, a week after helping the Braves beat Philadelphia to clinch their crown. Rhys Hoskins homered in the ninth for the Phillies, and Jerad Eickhoff (0-1) was the loser.

MARLINS 8, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - David Wright finally made it back into a major league game, grounding out in his first plate appearance for New York in nearly 2 1/2 years in a loss to Miami.

Sidelined by neck, back and shoulder injuries since May 27, 2016, the 35-year-old Wright came up as a pinch-hitter leading off the fifth inning. Wright is scheduled to start at third base Saturday night against the last-place Marlins in his goodbye game before a sellout crowd. Unable to overcome all the injuries, he said he expects this weekend to mark his final appearance in the big leagues.

Urena (9-12) won his sixth straight decision, holding the Mets to one run over six innings.

Quote of the Day
?I worked out with him (Jimmy Butler) all summer so when I said what I meant, it was like a right hook, I didn?t see it coming. I didn?t know. I thought ? it looked like from everything things were going good. But sometimes it?s a money aspect and fans and different players got to understand that. I understand that with being in the league for so many years, but got to try to just see what we can do. ? One thing about everybody who?s here, from the coaching staff, players, everybody?s familiar with each other, we?ve been through a lot together so we just got to keep trying.?
