Opening Day

I always loved opening day. Loved going to Memorial stadium with my grandfather who sadly passed away before Camden Yards opened. Loved going to Camden Yards in the early days when the stadium was packed and Federal Hill was nuts at 9:00 a.m. before the game and all night after. And enjoyed a much different experience in DC when the Nats started playing. Just a lot of great memories. Oh well, a lot older now and the Orioles suck!

Will post in here from time to time. Not every day as I just do not have the energy to be an everyday baseball player, plus baseball has never been that great to me betting wise. I find it an extremely difficulty sport to handicap. Follow the Nats and O's more than others, but O's will be tough as they could be a dog in just about every game this year. You do not see many +300 dogs on opening day!

For opening day it can be tough as some of the pitchers may be on a short leash, but I will stick to numbers that caught my eye:

Nats -125 - I know it is de Grom, but love Scherzer at this price.

Tampa +125 - Seriously, Snell getting plus money at home. Way too much credit for Verlander early in the season.

San Diego -105 - SF getting way too much respect here in my opinion as they are not a very good team. Maybe Bum is back, but I doubt it and SD has some initial excitement around Manny signing.

I am really trying to be positive as it is only the first game of the year, but Davey Martinez is already pissing me off. For the record, I hated the hire (Lerners too cheap to hire an experienced manager with a good team) and hated his performance last year as he was clueless all year.

Well, look like the same ole Nats to start the season. Never bunt, never move runners, can't hit a sac fly, bad base running and poor pitching decisions (first game of the year, you hit for Scherzer in the 7th with over 90 pitches).

Maybe they can pull this out late, but he is already driving me nuts.

Have to go with

Nats -140

Wheeler is a step down from de Grom and Syndegaard, while Corbin will want to impress. The strength of this Nats team is the back of its rotation and they need a win today. An 0-3 start at home is disastrous, especially with a manager that has no clue what he is doing.

This is going to be a popular play as this line is very tempting, but I have to go with it:

Mets Ov 7.5 -120

Matz is not very good and Smith is worse.

Not as easy as I thought last night, but a winner!

Philly +180 - Just too much value in this line to pass up. I love everything about Max Scherzer. Great player, competitor, etc, but the rest of his team has a lot to prove. Unless he goes at least 8 the Nats are likely vulnerable as their bullpen has not looked very good so far. Rosenthal can not get anyone out and Doolittle is not in top form yet as he struggled in spring training. Nats also have trouble scoring runs (they have an old school lineup with tons of speed, but of course they never bunt or move runners so they do not use what they have efficiently) so I expect this one to be close. Getting +180 is great value in my opinion.

You also have all the media hype of Harper being back in Washington. Just a lot of noise and makes for great tv and headlines. I would not be surprised to see him take Scherzer deep as I expect Max to challenge him.

Yeah, I figured it would be a popular play, but just like last night, sometimes the popular play wins. I do not like betting against Scherzer but +180 is a lot different than +140 or lower which is where I thought the line should be and it may be where it ends up.

Easy winner with the Phils +180 last night. Nats look exactly like last year's team but with less pop in the lineup. They just can not play good fundamental baseball which I believe is a reflection of the manager. Going to start the clock on firing Davey Martinez. He should have been canned at the end of last year, but Nats management is sick of admitting that they are uncapable of hiring, and unwilling to pay, a real manager. Their bullpen looks terrible and now they lost one of their best players, Turner, for a while. They are in for a rough start, as such:

Philly -140 - see no reason not to play the Phils again. Sanchez gets first start against Nola. There is a reason they are -140 on the road.

Oh, and how about them O's!! 4-1 to start the season!

Nats -130 - Simply a play against Matz who is 1-5 against the Nats. Couple that with the Nats record in NY (60-28 since 2010), I like the play.

Need to take note of the umpiring crew for the Nats/SF series. The whole crew has sucked calling balls and strikes. The ump behind the plate last night was not very good (and Martinez got tossed which rarely happens), but the one today is atrocious. Corbin is getting Greg Maddux calls all day long. Most are balls outside with 6 Giants so far striking out looking. Manager and Belt already tossed and rightly so as this guy should be umping high school games.

I have not posted in a while, but I have been betting against the Nationals a lot recently. I believe they have only won the first game of a new series once this season and they did not disappoint last night even with Scherzer pitching. Tonight Strasburg is pitching and it is probably their best chance to win a game in this series, but they are on the road and they are fielding a AAA lineup given all their injuries. They have trouble scoring runs and their bullpen sucks, so Stras has to go 8 for them to win. Yes, Milwaukee has a poor pitcher on the mound, but

Brewers +110

I will gladly take the home team at plus money. Got them -110 last night and now +. The Nats lineup will feature 3 position players hitting well below .200. Once you get past the top 3 they have serious issues right now. They are committing errors like it is spring training with a shortstop that should be in AA. And once you get to the bullpen they are in serious trouble as the bullpen has been horrific. And the icing on the cake is that they have one of the worse managers I have ever seen even when they are healthy. He is truly lost now. This is a team in disarray.

It is baseball and anything can happen, but at this price on the road against a good team I will play against the Nats in just about every game.

Nice win last night. Nats just can not score. They get some help with Rendon back, but their lineup is just not good right now. Hellickson pitching today. He was very good last time out, but of course, Martinez took him out too early and they blew the game. Hellickson has not gone beyond 6 this year and I doubt he does today. This means their terrible bullpen comes into play once again tonight. From the 7th inning on this team has been a disaster this year. Their inability to score runs just exacerbates the problem. Lines are catching up though and the Brewers are -210 with Brandon Woodruff on the mound.

Not a number I will lay with a very average pitcher so I will use the Brewers -1.5 Ev in a parlay with Ajax in soccer today.

Considered the Orioles +1.5 +144 as I think that line is ridiculous given how Sale has pitched so far this year.

And the Nats continue to stink it up.

See no reason it does not continue. You get a Dodger team that is 15-4 at home against a Nats team that can not score runs or play defense or basically do anything right. Again, Corbin will have to be lights out for the Nats to even have a chance. I will gladly lay it.

Dodgers -150 and -1.5 +149 (used in parlay with Chelsea to pay +230)

This may look too easy, but the pitching mismatch in DC today is simply too much to pass up.

Atlanta -155

Using straight and in a few soccer parlays.

HR Champ

Guerrero +450

He has the least HR's amongst them but is the third choice at +450. I will bite. I do like the fact that most of these guys will win almost double their salary this year if they win. I think that is some good motivation.
