LA Angels of Anaheim (9-12) at New York Yankees (12-10), 7:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Los Angeles - Jered Weaver (2-1, 2.45) New York - Andy Pettitte (2-1, 2.96)

- The New York Yankees try to push their winning streak to a season-high four games this evening when they play the second test of their four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees drew first blood in this set with a thrilling win on Thursday, as Ramiro Pena's first two career RBI came as part of a game-changing three-run eighth inning in New York's 7-4 victory. Melky Cabrera put his team ahead with a bases-loaded single in the big eighth and was 2-for-4 for the Yankees, who have won four straight in their new ballpark

Robinson Cano extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a single in the eighth, while Nick Swisher continued to produce, scoring twice in the win. Swisher is 5-for-10 with three homers, five RBI and seven runs scored in his last three games.

Hideki Matsui has also hit in 10 straight games.

A.J. Burnett didn't factor in the decision after he went seven frames and gave up four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts against one walk. Phil Coke (1-1) got the win after hurling a perfect eighth inning. Mariano Rivera earned his fifth save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

Mike Napoli had a solo homer for the Angels, who had a three-game winning streak stopped. Maicer Izturis, Chone Figgins and Erick Aybar drove in a run each in the setback.

Anthony Ortega lasted 6 1/3 innings and gave up four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits in his second career start. Justin Speier (0-1) was tagged with the loss after he gave up all three runs while recording just one out in the eighth.

Heading to the hill for the Yankees tonight will be left-hander Andy Pettitte, who is 2-1 with a 2.96 earned run average. Pettitte suffered his first loss of the season on Sunday in Boston, as the Red Sox tagged him for four runs (three earned) and six hits in six innings.

Pettitte has faced the Angels 25 times and is 12-8 against them with a 4.40 ERA.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, will counter with righty Jered Weaver, who is coming off his best start of the season. Weaver silenced Seattle's bats on Sunday, as he scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings to earn the win, upping his record to 2-1 on the year, while lowering his ERA to 2.45.

Weaver is 3-1 lifetime against the Yankees with a 6.14 ERA.

Despite the loss in the opener, the Angels have had their way with the Yankees over the past few seasons, going 19-11 against them since the start of the 2006 season. Anaheim won seven of its 10 meetings with the Yanks last season, but split their four matchups at Yankee Stadium.

Cleveland Indians (8-14) at Detroit Tigers (11-10), 7:05 p.m.

Cleveland Indians (8-14) at Detroit Tigers (11-10), 7:05 p.m.

Cleveland Indians (8-14) at Detroit Tigers (11-10), 7:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cleveland - Carl Pavano (0-3, 9.50) Detroit - Armando Galarraga (3-0, 1.85)

Armando Galarraga goes for his fourth win of the season this evening, when the Detroit Tigers welcome the Cleveland Indians to town for the first of three games at Comerica Park.

Galarraga, who led the Tigers with 13 wins last season, improved to 3-0 Sunday in Kansas City, as he held the Royals to a run and three hits in six innings to lower his earned run average to 1.85. He also struck out seven, but walked a season-high five batters.

The 27-year-old righty has seen his walk total rise in each start and has issued 11 free passes in 24 1/3 innings this season.

Galarraga, who has allowed one earned run in his two wins at home this season, is unbeaten in five starts against the Indians, posting a 3-0 mark to go along with a 3.62 ERA.

Detroit enters tonight's opener after dropping the final two contests of their three-game series with the New York Yankees, including an 8-6 loss in Wednesday's finale. Curtis Granderson had a three-run homer for the Tigers, who are 3-4 over their last seven games.

Placido Polanco and Gerald Laird drove in a run each in the setback. Rick Porcello (1-3) was dealt the loss after giving up six runs on as many hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge went 1-for-2, scored twice, drove in a run and has now reached base safely in all 21 games this year.

Cleveland, meanwhile, dropped two of three to the Boston Red Sox after losing the series finale, 6-5, in 10 innings Wednesday in disappointing fashion. The Indians blew a five-run lead before allowing Jonathan Van Every's game-winning solo home run in the top of the 10th.

Mark DeRosa and Kelly Shoppach each homered for the Indians, who have lost four of six and continue to remain in the cellar of the AL Central. Fausto Carmona, though, turned in his best start of the season, giving up only two runs on five hits and four walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Jensen Lewis (2-3) served up Van Every's blast - the first big league home run of the Red Sox outfielder's career - and was saddled with the loss.

Hoping to get the Indians back into the win column this evening will be right- hander Carl Pavano, who is 0-3 with a 9.50 ERA and will be facing the Tigers for the first time in his career. Pavano was hammered by the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, as he allowed five runs and 11 hits in five innings.

In his three losses this season, Pavano has yielded 18 runs and 25 hits in 12 innings.

Cleveland won 11 of its 18 matchups with the Tigers last season and is 12-7 in its 19 most recent visits to Motown.

Baltimore Orioles (9-13) at Toronto Blue Jays (15-9), 7:07 p.m.

Baltimore Orioles (9-13) at Toronto Blue Jays (15-9), 7:07 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Baltimore - Mark Hendrickson (1-3, 5.40) Toronto - Roy Halladay (4-1, 3.75)

- The Toronto Blue Jays get their first taste of American League East Division competition this evening when they begin a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre.

In a scheduling oddity, the Blue Jays have played all 24 of their games outside the division, which they led up until they were passed by the Boston Red Sox by percentage points earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the Orioles started strong in the season's first week but have struggled since, plummeting to 9-13 and leading only the disappointing Tampa Bay Rays in the five-team loop.

Second in the AL in wins behind only Zack Greinke in Kansas City, Toronto veteran workhorse Roy Halladay will try to go at least seven innings for the sixth straight time

The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder went seven innings each while winning his first three starts of 2009, then went eight in a loss to Texas before bouncing back to top the Chicago White Sox in April 26.

That win, at U.S. Cellular Field, saw Halladay allow eight hits and three runs in seven innings, walking one and striking out six while tossing a season-high 119 pitches.

Halladay won a pair of starts against the Orioles last season, tossing 14 2/3 innings and giving up 15 hits and five runs, while walking just one batter and striking out 13.

For Baltimore, 34-year-old southpaw Mark Hendrickson tries to snap a three- start skid.

A 6-foot-9, 230-pounder, Hendrickson was solid in downing Tampa Bay, 5-4, in his initial start on April 10, but has subsequently dropped three in a row at Texas, at Boston and home with the Rangers.

In the three losses, he's allowed 22 hits and 18 runs - 10 earned - in just 13 innings.

He threw 79 pitches over 4 1/3 innings against the Rangers on April 25, losing a 6-5 verdict.

Hendrickson last met the Blue Jays in 2007, making three relief appearances and surrendering seven hits and five runs in 6 2/3 innings.

On Thursday in Kansas City, John Buck finished 3-for-3 with two triples and five RBI as the Royals topped Toronto, 8-6, in the finale of a four-game set from Kauffman Stadium.

Adam Lind hit a two-run homer and Marco Scutaro added a solo shot for the Blue Jays, losers in four of their last six overall. Travis Snider, Raul Chavez and Vernon Wells each added an RBI in the setback.

Brian Burres (0-2) took the loss, charged with five hits and six runs -- four earned -- over his two-plus inning start.

On Wednesday in Baltimore, Torii Hunter and Kendry Morales hit back-to- back home runs in the seventh to help the LA Angels of Anaheim take a 3-2 win over the Orioles and sweep a two-game set at Camden Yards.

Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff each had an RBI for the Orioles, who have lost five of their last six. Koji Uehara (2-2) was saddled with the loss for giving up three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work.

Toronto won 12 of its 18 matchups with the Orioles a year ago.

Boston Red Sox (14-8) at Tampa Bay Rays (9-14), 7:38 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Boston - Justin Masterson (2-0, 2.70) Tampa Bay - Andy Sonnanstine (0-3, 7.78)

Evan Longoria has done his part to ensure that the Rays-Red Sox rivalry tilts in his club's favor. Tampa Bay will try to defeat Boston for a fourth straight game this evening in the second contest of a four-game series between the clubs at Tropicana Field.

In just his second season in the majors, Longoria is a career .309 batter in 19 games versus the Red Sox. In four games this year, he is hitting .474 (9- for-19) against them with three homers and nine runs batted in, helping Tampa Bay win three of those contests.

Longoria had three hits -- one a solo homer -- four RBI and three runs scored in Thursday night's 13-0 win over Boston, backing a near flawless outing from starter Matt Garza. Garza (2-2) allowed just a hit and one walk while striking out 10 in 7 2/3 innings, and carried a perfect game into the seventh inning.

Michel Hernandez added four hits, including a solo home run, and three RBI in the victory that saw every Rays starter post at least one hit and a run scored. Tampa, which had lost four of five heading into the contest, ended with 18 hits in all.

The Rays, who won two of three in Boston from April 7-9, won 10 of 18 versus the Red Sox last year and claimed a victory in eight of nine at home. Tampa Bay then battled the Red Sox in the ALCS and ultimately won Game 7 at home to complete its worst-to-first run that ended with a loss to Philadelphia in the World Series.

Jacoby Ellsbury had the lone hit and David Ortiz and Julio Lugo each drew a walk for the Red Sox, who have dropped two of three on the heels of an 11-game winning streak. Josh Beckett (2-2) was clobbered for seven runs on 10 hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Justin Masterson will hope for better results when he takes the hill tonight for Boston. Masterson has made two starts in place of the injured Daisuke Matsuzaka and won both, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing just one run in each outing. That includes a win over the rival Yankees on Sunday.

The right-hander has faced the Rays twice in relief this year and has allowed just a hit over one inning of work. Masterson is 1-2 with a 5.28 earned run average in six games (2 starts) lifetime versus Tampa Bay, but is 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA at Tropicana Field.

The Rays counter with Andy Sonnanstine, who is 0-3 with a 7.78 ERA in four starts this year. He is coming off his worst outing of the season, a matchup with Oakland on Sunday in which he allowed season highs of seven runs and 10 hits while lasting a season-low four innings.

The righty is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in six career regular-season games against the Red Sox, but bested them in Game 4 of last year's ALCS with 7 1/3 solid innings.

Chicago White Sox (11-10) at Texas Rangers (10-11), 8:05 p.m.

Chicago White Sox (11-10) at Texas Rangers (10-11), 8:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Mark Buehrle (3-0, 3.00) Texas - Scott Feldman (1-0, 7.71)

Mark Buehrle takes aim at a fourth straight winning start for the Chicago White Sox this evening in the opener of a three-game series with the hosting Texas Rangers in Arlington.

Buehrle has won all three of his starts since getting a no-decision to begin the year. He has allowed more than two runs in only one of his outings while pitching to a 3.00 earned run average on the season. The left-hander faced Toronto on Saturday and allowed only two runs over six innings.

The 30-year-old hasn't won four straight decisions since doing so over five starts from June 7-29 of last year and previously won four consecutive starts from May 3-18, 2005.

Buehrle has won three of his last four decisions versus the Rangers, notching a shutout and 2.30 ERA in that span, and is 10-3 with a 2.84 ERA in 16 games (13 starts) lifetime against the club.

After splitting a doubleheader with Seattle on Tuesday, the White Sox posted a 6-3 victory on Wednesday to earn their first series win since they took three of four from Tampa Bay from April 16-19.

Chicago got three homers in the game, including back-to-back solo shots from Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye in the seventh inning. Quentin ended with two RBI and A.J. Pierzynski also went deep as part of a three-hit effort. Bobby Jenks notched his fifth save with a perfect ninth.

The Rangers, meanwhile, were mere inches away from entering May above .500, but instead sit at 10-11 after Thursday's 4-2 loss to Oakland. Trailing by the eventual final margin, Ian Kinsler drove a pitch to center in the eighth inning that appeared to be a go-ahead, three-run homer, but the Athletics' Ryan Sweeney made a leaping catch at the wall for a very long out to end the inning.

Vicente Padilla (1-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on eight hits in six-plus innings of work. Hank Blalock and Andruw Jones had a solo homer each in the setback, Texas' second in the last four games.

Already without slugger Josh Hamilton for a fourth straight game due to a strained rib cage muscle, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia left the contest early due to irritation in his eye.

Hamilton isn't expected back until next week at the earliest, while Saltalamacchia's status is unknown.

Scott Feldman is expected to make a second straight start today, but it could be his last with Kris Benson's return looming. Feldman began the year with three bullpen appearances and was tagged for nine runs in only 6 2/3 total innings.

However, in his start versus Baltimore on Saturday, the right-handed Feldman got the win after yielding only a run and four hits in five innings to lower his earned run average from 12.12 to 7.71.

Feldman is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA in six career outings, including one start, versus the White Sox.

These two clubs split six meetings last year, with the Rangers winning two of three at home.

Kansas City Royals (12-10) at Minnesota Twins (11-11), 8:10 p.m.

Kansas City Royals (12-10) at Minnesota Twins (11-11), 8:10 p.m.

Kansas City Royals (12-10) at Minnesota Twins (11-11), 8:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Kansas City - Sidney Ponson (0-3, 5.79) Minnesota - Kevin Slowey (3-0, 4.44)

The Minnesota Twins are expected to have Joe Mauer back in the lineup tonight, when they begin a three-game series versus the Kansas City Royals at the Metrodome.

Mauer is slated to return this evening after missing the Twins' first 22 games due to lower back inflammation, with Minnesota splitting those games without Mauer while batting .262 as a team.

The catcher hit .328 last year to win his second American League batting title and also won his first Gold Glove. Mauer batted .400 (6-for-15) in five rehab games and is a career .289 hitter versus the Royals. He is also 5-for-15 in his career versus Sidney Ponson, tonight's slated starter for Kansas City.

Mauer's return is good news for Twins starter Kevin Slowey, who will aim to improve to 4-0 on the season tonight. Slowey has won his last two starts and has a 4.44 earned run average on the season. He held the Angels to just a pair of runs in seven innings on April 18, then bested Cleveland on Saturday with eight innings of one-run ball. The righty allowed eight hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out seven.

Slowey, who turns 25 on Monday, is 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA in four games (3 starts) lifetime versus the Royals.

Minnesota improved to 11-11 on the season and won for the fourth time in six games on Wednesday with an 8-3 victory over Tampa Bay. Justin Morneau and Brendan Harris both finished with three hits, two runs scored and a run batted in for the Twins.

Jason Kubel, Delmon Young and Michael Cuddyer knocked in a run each in the win. Nick Blackburn (2-1) earned the victory after throwing seven innings and giving up two runs on eight hits.

For the Royals, Ponson takes this hill after going a season-high eight innings versus Detroit on Saturday. The right-hander allowed just three runs on six hits with a season-best seven strikeouts, but still got the loss in a 3-2 decision. That dropped Ponson to 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA on the season.

The 32-year-old has had great success in his career versus the Twins, going 11-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) against the club he pitched for in 2007. Ponson is just 5-7 with a 4.41 ERA in 12 starts at the Metrodome, though.

The Royals wrapped a four-game set with Toronto on Thursday and took three contests in the series thanks to Thursday's 8-6 win. John Buck finished 3- for-3 with two triples and five RBI for Kansas City. Billy Butler added two hits, a run driven in and two scored for the Royals, who scored 27 total runs in the series.

Kyle Davies (2-1) yielded seven hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings, walking three without a strikeout for the win. Davies was backed by his infielders, who tied a team record by turning six double plays.

Juan Cruz picked up the save with closer Joakim Soria still sidelined due to stiffness in his right shoulder. Soria hasn't pitched since April 22, but could make his return tonight if needed.

At 12-10, the Royals lead the AL Central by a half-game over the White Sox and Detroit Tigers.

The Royals have won three of their last four versus the Twins, but Minnesota won 12 of the 18 meetings a season ago.

Oakland Athletics (8-11) at Seattle Mariners (13-9), 10:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Oakland - Dana Eveland (1-1, 5.95) Seattle - Carlos Silva (1-2, 6.14)

The Seattle Mariners shoot for their seventh straight win over the Oakland Athletics tonight when the AL West foes start a three-game set at Safeco Field.

These teams met earlier in the season at Oakland, where the Mariners completed a three-game sweep. Seattle also swept the A's at Safeco to end last season.

The Mariners enter tonight's contest surprisingly alone atop the AL West standings after an impressive April that saw them go 13-9 just one year removed from losing 101 games and finishing 39 games back in the division.

Seattle, though, has hit the skids of late and has dropped three of four after losing two of three to the Chicago White Sox, including a 6-3 setback in Wednesday's rubber match at U.S. Cellular Field.

Adrian Beltre went 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Ken Griffey Jr. added a two-run double and scored a run in the loss. Shawn Kelley (0-1) took the loss while Mariners starter Erik Bedard yielded three runs on six hits and three walks in five-plus innings of work.

Heading to the hill for the Mariners tonight will be right-hander Carlos Silva, who is coming off his first win of the season. Silva defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Saturday, surrendering three runs and six hits in five innings to up his mark to 1-2 on the year, while lowering his earned run average to 6.14.

Silva has faced the A's 12 times (11 starts) and is 4-3 against them with a 3.08 ERA.

Oakland, meanwhile, will counter with left-hander Dana Eveland, who has thrived in his young career against the Mariners, going a perfect 4-0 with a 2.55 ERA in his four starts against them.

Eveland comes into tonight's tilt sporting a ledger of 1-1 to go along with a 5.95 ERA. Eveland picked up the win on Sunday against Tampa Bay, as he held the Rays to a run and four hits in five innings.

On Thursday, Dallas Braden was solid on the hill while Ryan Sweeney went 2- for-5 and made a game-saving catch in the eighth, helping Oakland earn a split in its rain-shortened two-game set from the Texas Rangers, 4-2.

Matt Holliday hit his first home run of the season in the win, while Landon Powell, Kurt Suzuki and Jack Cust drove in a run each in the win for the A's, who have won three of four.

Braden (3-2) gave up five hits with six strikeouts and four walks over five scoreless innings to get the win. Michael Wuertz got his first save of the year despite giving up a homer in the ninth.

Eric Chavez was in the starting lineup, but was scratched prior to the first pitch due to a strained right forearm. Chavez has played in only three of the previous 12 games coming in because of the injury.

Oakland won 10 of its 19 matchups with the Mariners last season, but Seattle is 26-15 in the series since the start of the 2007 campaign.

Florida Marlins (14-8) at Chicago Cubs (10-11), 2:20 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Florida - Graham Taylor (0-1, 9.82) Chicago - Rich Harden (2-1, 3.86)

- Florida Marlins rookie pitcher Graham Taylor will try to keep the ball rolling this afternoon, when he takes the mound against the Chicago Cubs in the second test of a four-game series at Wrigley Field.

The NL East-leading Marlins have won three in a row since a seven-game skid and hope that Taylor can rebound from losing his major league debut on Sunday against Philadelphia. In a 13-2 loss to the Phillies, Taylor was reached for four runs on four hits and six walks over 3 2/3 innings.

The lefty has a chance to take advantage of a struggling Chicago squad that has dropped seven of its last nine contests.

Florida handed the Cubs an 8-2 loss in 10 innings in Thursday's series opener, thanks to a six-run explosion in the deciding frame. Jorge Cantu continued to swing a hot bat for the Marlins and drove in three runs with a double to highlight the top of the 10th inning. Cantu, who also homered and ended with four RBI, owns six hits -- including four homers -- and 10 runs batted in over the last three games.

Dan Uggla and Cameron Maybin each had two hits and an RBI for the Marlins, who lead the NL East by two games over the Phillies. Florida starter Chris Volstad was reached for a pair of runs and three hits in seven frames for the no- decision, while striking out five batters. Renyel Pinto (2-0) collected the win by getting the final out in the ninth inning.

The Marlins improved to 3-1 on a seven-game road trip.

Milton Bradley and Mike Fontenot both homered for the Cubs, who got two hits from Ryan Theriot in defeat.

Chicago starter Sean Marshall did not factor in the outcome after pitching seven solid innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts and a pair of walks. Aaron Heilman (2-1) was saddled with the loss by getting rocked for six runs -- five earned -- in the top of the 10th inning.

The Cubs will hand the ball to Rich Harden on Friday, and he is coming off back-to-back wins against Cincinnati and St. Louis. Harden threw six innings of two-run ball in each of those outings and struck out nine in a 10-3 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday. Harden improved to 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in four trips to the hill this season and has fanned at least eight batters in each of those starts.

The right-hander is 0-0 with a 1.69 earned run average in two career starts against the Marlins.

Chicago won four of the seven meetings with Florida a year ago.

Cincinnati Reds (11-10) at Pittsburgh Pirates (11-10), 7:05 p.m.

Cincinnati Reds (11-10) at Pittsburgh Pirates (11-10), 7:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cincinnati - Bronson Arroyo (3-1, 6.48) Pittsburgh - Zach Duke (3-1, 2.43)

Two perennial also-rans hoping for better fortunes in 2009 - the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates - match up tonight at PNC Park to open a three-game weekend series between National League Central Division rivals.

The Reds, who were 74-88 last season, finished fifth in the NL Central, leading only one team - the Pirates, who were dead last in the six-team loop with a 67-95 mark.

Cincinnati has begun this season with a glimmer of promise, going 7-3 on a recent road trip to sit 11-10 through the 21 games, the exact same record as Pittsburgh, which also trails front-running St. Louis by 3 1/2 games in the divisional race.

Starting on the mound for the visitors will be veteran right-hander Bronson Arroyo, who'd won three straight starts to begin the season before dropping a 10-2 verdict to Atlanta in his last time out.

A 32-year-old Florida native, Arroyo allowed nine hits and nine runs on 102 pitches in 5 2/3 innings to the Braves, prompting his earned run average to jump from a respectable 4.19 to a ghastly 6.48.

He'd been successful, if not spectacular, through 19 1/3 innings over three previous starts, allowing 21 hits and nine runs while walking six batters and striking out nine.

Arroyo made two starts against the Pirates in 2008 and was a stingy 1-0, allowing just nine hits and three earned runs in 11 innings.

He'll be opposed by 26-year-old lefty Zach Duke, who won his first two starts before splitting his last two.

A 6-foot-2, 205-pounder, Duke allowed nine hits and an earned run in downing St. Louis and Houston in his first two outings of 2009, before, like Arroyo, being shelled by the Braves for loss No. 1.

He bounced back nicely on April at San Diego, however, tossing 8 1/3 innings of six-hit, one-run ball in the Pirates' 10-1 rout.

Duke made one start against the Reds in 2008 and pitched well in a no- decision, allowing six hits and a run in five innings of work.

On Wednesday in Cincinnati, Edinson Volquez was brilliant, pitching eight shutout innings, as the Reds defeated the Houston Astros, 3-0, in the finale of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park.

Volquez (3-2) allowed one hit -- a double to Miguel Tejada in the first inning -- walked one and struck out six. Francisco Cordero earned his seventh save of the season with a perfect ninth inning, as Cincinnati snapped an 11-game home losing streak to Houston dating back to May 10, 2007.

Laynce Nix went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while Adam Rosales knocked in a pair for the Reds, who had dropped the first two games in the series. The Reds claimed only their second win in the last six games overall.

In Milwaukee, Yovani Gallardo single-handedly carried the Brewers to their fifth consecutive sweep of the Pirates, throwing eight scoreless innings and providing the only run of the game with his fourth career home run in a 1-0 decision.

Ian Snell (1-3) scattered five hits and four walks and surrendered only one run in seven innings to take the tough loss for the Pirates, who had won five of six coming into the three-game set.

These teams split a rain-shortened two-game series earlier in the year, but Pittsburgh is 10-7 in the series since the start of last season.

St. Louis Cardinals (16-7) at Washington Nationals (5-16), 7:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Todd Wellemeyer (1-2, 6.14) Washington - Jordan Zimmermann (2-0, 2.38)

Ryan Zimmerman has been the lone diamond in the rough for the lowly Washington Nationals and will try to get his club back on track tonight in the second installment of a four-game series versus the St. Louis Cardinals at Nationals Park.

The slugging third baseman is riding a team-best 19-game hitting streak and has five homers and 16 RBI during the tear. Zimmerman hit a two-run homer in Thursday's 9-4 loss to the Cardinals in the series opener, while Jesus Flores went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for the Nationals, who have lost six of their past eight games. Anderson Hernandez drove in the other run as the Nationals kicked off a six-game homestand in losing fashion.

Washington starter Daniel Cabrera gave up three runs on four hits in six innings in a no-decision. Reliever Julian Tavarez (0-2) absorbed the loss for permitting five runs -- two earned -- in just one-third of an inning.

Nationals rookie Jordan Zimmermann will make his third career start Friday and has been a pleasant surprise for Manny Acta's pitching staff. Zimmermann made his debut on April 20 in a 3-2 win over Atlanta, hurling six innings of two- run ball for his first major league victory. He then faced the Mets in New York six days later and lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run in an 8-1 win.

Zimmermann, a right-hander, currently sports a 2.38 earned run average.

St. Louis will try to bang around Washington's rookie pitcher and has won two straight and eight of its last 10 games, including last night's victory in the nation's capital. Rick Ankiel finished 2-for-3 and knocked in the eventual game-winning run during a five-run ninth inning that lifted the Cards to a 3-1 mark on their seven-game road trip.

Cardinals superstar Albert Pujols went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and starting pitcher Mitchell Boggs tossed six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in a no-decision. Chris Perez (1-1) notched the final two outs in the eighth inning to earn the win.

Todd Wellemeyer hopes to bounce back from a rough outing his last time out when he takes the ball Friday for the Cardinals. Wellemeyer gave up six runs -- five earned -- on eight hits in five innings of a 10-3 setback versus the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. He fell to 1-2 with a 6.14 ERA in four starts this season.

The right-hander has faced the Nationals eight times in his career (1 start) and is 1-1 with a save and a 3.38 earned run average.

St. Louis won five of six meetings with Washington last season.
