Minnesota Twins (18-18) at New York Yankees (18-17), 1:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Minnesota - Nick Blackburn (2-2, 4.32) New York - Joba Chamberlain (2-1, 3.89)

After a wild finish last night, the Minnesota Twins will try to regroup when they clash with the New York Yankees this afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Yesterday, Melky Cabrera had the game-winning two-run single as New York scored three times in the ninth to secure a thrilling 5-4 victory over Minnesota in the opener of a four-game set.

Brett Gardner, who came in after Johnny Damon was thrown out in the third for arguing a called third strike, went 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park homer and missed the cycle by a double for the Yankees, who have won three straight games. Damon went 0-for-2 prior to the early exit to see his 10-game extra- base hitting streak come to an end.

"As long as I can get on base and score I don't care how it happens," said Gardner. "All that matters is crossing the plate."

Derek Jeter added a solo homer and Mark Teixeira also drove in a run in the win. Alex Rodriguez, who made his debut at the new Yankee Stadium, was 0-for-1 with four walks. Jose Veras (2-1) got the win after recording the final out in the ninth.

Justin Morneau had a pair of solo homers for the Twins, who saw their three- game winning streak halted. Joe Mauer also had a solo homer in the setback. Nick Punto drove in the other run.

Twins third baseman Joe Crede left the game with tightness in his back and is listed as day-to-day.

Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision, as Phil Hughes lasted five innings and yielded three runs on six hits. Francisco Liriano went six frames and gave up a run on four hits with six strikeouts and as many walks for Minnesota.

Manning the rubber this afternoon for the Twins will be Nick Blackburn. Blackburn is coming off his best showing of the season, shutting down Seattle for seven innings, scattering five hits, while striking out six batters. However, despite the outstanding performance the right-hander did not factor in the decision.

Blackburn has not faired well against the Yankees in three career starts, allowing eight runs in just 10 2/3 innings of work. The righthander has surrendered a whooping 18 hits, and has also walked six batters.

As for the Yanks, they will turn to the hard-throwing, and sometimes erratic Joba Chamberlain. The right handed hurler pushed his ledger on the year to 2-1 with a solid effort in a 5-3 win over Baltimore the last time he toed the rubber.

Chamberlain allowed three runs on nine hits in six innings of work, but was able to strike out five batters, while only walking two. This will be the first-ever appearance for the young hurler against Minnesota.

Chamberlain has struggled at the new park thus far, surrendering nine runs in just 10 1/3 innings of duty. However, during that time has struck out 16 opponents.

New York won six of 10 from the Twins last season, winning all three games played at home.

The New York Yankees' new stadium is hitter-friendly, but the Minnesota Twins didn't find it any more welcoming than the old one in their first visit there.

The Yankees look to win their season high-tying fourth straight contest Saturday when they continue a four-game series with the Twins.

New York (18-17) rallied from three runs down in the ninth inning, capped by Melky Cabrera's two-run single, for a 5-4 win on Friday to snap a five-game skid in its new ballpark. The Yankees have won five in a row and 21 of the last 26 meetings at home against Minnesota.

The Twins (18-18) hit three homers, two by 2006 AL MVP Justin Morneau. The Yankees have allowed 27 home runs in their first 14 home games.

New York, meanwhile, had two home runs. Derek Jeter hit one in conventional fashion, and Brett Gardner - a replacement after Johnny Damon was ejected for arguing balls and strikes - added an inside-the-park drive in the seventh.

Playing in his first home game of the season following hip surgery and admission of performance-enhancing drug use, Alex Rodriguez walked four times.

"It was just nice, from early on in batting practice, walking around the city,' Rodriguez said. "Overall, people have been very gracious."

The loss snapped Minnesota's three-game winning streak. Morneau and Joe Mauer were a combined 3-for-9 with three RBIs, and they're hitting .377 (20 for 53) with nine home runs and 20 RBIs in the last seven games.

They'll look to take advantage of Joba Chamberlain (2-1, 3.89 ERA) early.

Chamberlain allowed three first-inning runs to Baltimore on Sunday, but lasted six innings to get the decision in the 5-3 victory. Of the 18 runs he's given up this season, 11 have come during the right-hander's first three innings.

"I've always been a slow starter. Always," Chamberlain told the Yankees' official Web site. "It's something I've been trying to figure out for a long time. We need to figure it out soon, because it's frustrating and it's starting to make me mad."

Chamberlain, making his first appearance against the Twins, is 0-1 with a 7.84 ERA in two home starts this year. He's walked seven and struck out 16 in 10 1-3 innings.

Minnesota will counter with Nick Blackburn (2-2, 4.32), who bounced back from his worst start of 2009 to pitch seven scoreless innings against Seattle on Sunday. He gave up five hits, walked one and struck out six, but didn't factor in the 5-3 loss.

The right-hander is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts against the Yankees.

Delmon Young left the Twins on Friday to be with his ill mother. He was placed on the family medical emergency list, which allows players to attend to personal issues for up to seven days. Young was hitting .277 with a home run and 14 RBIs in 25 games.

Philadelphia Phillies (17-16) at Washington Nationals (11-22), 1:05, 7:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Game 1: Philadelphia - Brett Myers (2-2, 4.81) Washington - Scott Olsen (1-3, 7.00)

Game 2: Philadelphia -Andrew Carpenter (0-0, 0.00) Washington - Daniel Cabrera (0-4. 4.98)

The Philadelphia Phillies kicked off their lengthy road trip in style last night and will resume a four-game series against the Washington Nationals this afternoon with a day-night doubleheader in DC.

Philadelphia opened a 10-game trek with Friday's hard-fought 10-6 victory in 12 innings at Nationals Park thanks to Raul Ibanez, who went 4-for-6 and hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the 12th inning off Kip Wells. Pedro Feliz reached base six times, going 4-for-5 with two walks and two RBI, while Carlos Ruiz knocked in two runs during a three-hit effort.

Ryan Howard hit a three-run homer in the win and J.A. Happ collected the win for two scoreless innings of work. Happ was scheduled to start the nightcap for the Phillies on Saturday. Joe Blanton started for the Phils and was reached for four runs in five innings for the no-decision, while closer Brad Lidge blew his second save of the season for giving up two runs in the ninth.

"I wasn't really looking for too much of anything, that was probably the best thing about it," Howard said of his blast to center. "I just kind of reacted to the fastball and caught up to it and was lucky enough to have it go out."

Philadelphia, which visited the White House and President Obama earlier on Friday, is tied with Atlanta at two games behind the New York Mets for the top spot in the National League East standings.

The Phillies, who will also visit the Reds and Yankees on their trip, will send Brett Myers to the mound in the first game and he is coming off his best outing of the 2009 season. Myers pitched six innings of one-run ball in a 4-2 loss versus Atlanta on May 10 and did not factor in the outcome after the bullpen blew the lead.

Myers is 2-2 with a 4.81 ERA in seven starts and had given up at least three runs in each outing before settling down against the Braves. He will face Washington for the second time this season after losing a 4-1 decision on April 29. He gave up three runs and eight hits in six frames.

The right-hander is 9-9 with a 4.30 earned run average through 31 career games (21 starts) against Montreal/Washington.

Ryan Zimmerman continued to swing a hot bat for the Nationals, ending 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored in defeat. Willie Harris sent the game into extra innings with a two-run double in the ninth and Wil Nieves finished with a pair of hits and two RBI for the Nats.

Wells was charged with the loss and starter John Lannan was reached for three runs over the first 5 2/3 innings for Washington, which has dropped four of five games and kicked off an 11-game homestand on a sour note. The Nationals will also host Pittsburgh and Baltimore on the residency.

"We basically walked ourselves to death," said Nats manager Manny Acta. "At the end of the game, we had eight walks...from the bullpen. When you play with fire, obviously, you burn yourself."

Scott Olsen will counter Myers on the hill for the Nationals in the first game, and is just 1-3 with a 7.00 earned run average in seven starts this season. Olsen hasn't recorded a decision in each of his last two starts in which he's given up five runs apiece. He allowed five runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings of a 10-8 setback to Arizona the previous time out on May 10.

The left-hander, who has permitted five or more runs in four starts this season, defeated Myers and the Phillies back in April at Citizens Bank Park. Olsen was reached for only a run on six hits over 5 1/3 innings of work. In 12 career starts against the Phillies, Olsen is 5-5 with a 4.98 ERA.

Philadelphia will go with Andrew Carpenter in the nightcap and he made his major league debut against the Mets on August 27 last season, hurling a scoreless inning of relief in a 6-3 loss. The righty was 1-0 with a 4.72 ERA in six starts with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.

Struggling Nats starter Daniel Cabrera will oppose Carpenter tonight and is 0-4 with a 4.98 ERA in seven starts this season. Cabrera has lost back-to-back starts and last pitched on May 11 at San Francisco, yielding eight runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of an 11-7 defeat.

The right-hander did not factor in the outcome of a 9-8 loss to Philadelphia on April 13, allowing four runs, one of which was earned, on six hits over five innings of work. Cabrera is 0-1 with a 7.45 ERA in three career games (two starts) against the Phillies.

Philadelphia is 4-2 against Washington this season after winning 12 of the 18 matchups between the teams a year ago.

Preview: Phillies at Nationals

Preview: Phillies at Nationals

There's something about playing in a doubleheader that energizes Ryan Howard. That could be bad news for the Washington Nationals. The slugger leads the Philadelphia Phillies against the last-place Nationals in a day-night twinbill Saturday. The 2006 NL MVP hit his first home run since May 7, a three-run shot in the seventh inning, that gave Philadelphia a 6-4 lead Friday. It was Howard's seventh this season and fifth on the road.Closer Brad Lidge, though, gave up a two-run double in the ninth before the Phillies (17-16) answered with four in 12th for a 10-6 win. While Philadelphia got the victory, it had to use J.A. Happ - originally scheduled to start Saturday's nightcap - for two innings. He struck out three and earned the win."Once we got there in the game, and I looked at their team and our team, and compared what players were left, what pitchers," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel explained, "I said ... 'We're going for it."'Howard's homer was his only hit in six at-bats. The major league leader with 160 homers since the start of 2006, he's batting .338 (25 for 74) with eight homers and 14 RBIs in 23 games during doubleheaders in his career.Howard has hit .481 (13 for 27) with three doubles and two homers against Scott Olsen (1-3, 7.00 ERA), who starts the opener for Washington. On Sunday, the left-hander took a batted ball off his ankle and exited after giving up five runs, 10 hits and a season high-tying three walks over 4 1-3 innings of a 10-8 loss to Arizona."My outing was awful," he told the Nationals' official Web site. "There was nothing positive."Olsen beat the Phillies 4-1 on April 29 and is 4-1 with a 4.50 ERA in his last six starts against them.Daniel Cabrera (0-4, 4.98) will start the nightcap as he tries to forget a meltdown in his last appearance. He allowed eight runs and walked six - both season highs - in 4 2-3 innings of an 11-7 loss to San Francisco on Monday. Cabrera issued four straight bases on balls in the fifth after Ryan Zimmerman misplayed a ball in left field.Though manager Manny Acta said he would keep Cabrera in the rotation for now, he ripped his pitcher for what he saw as a lack of mental toughness."You have to put errors behind you and you have to be able to shake it off," Acta said. "I told him that he wasn't able to handle it. This is Major League Baseball and the difference from the minors is the mental aspect. You have to be able to put those things behind you."Cabrera didn't get a decision in a 9-8 loss to Philadelphia on April 13, pitching five innings and giving up four runs - one earned. He's 0-1 with a save and a 7.45 ERA in three career appearances versus the Phillies.Zimmerman, whose 30-game hitting streak ended in Washington's 6-3 win over San Francisco on Wednesday, had three hits Friday and is batting .362. He's recorded at least a hit in all 14 games at Nationals Park this year, batting .403 (25 for 62).Brett Myers (2-2, 4.81) looks to build on his best outing of 2009 for the Phillies in Saturday's opener. The right-hander gave up a run and five hits over six innings Sunday, although Philadelphia fell 4-2 to Atlanta.Myers lost to Olsen and the Nats on April 29, dropping to 8-8 with a 4.57 ERA in 21 starts against Washington.Philadelphia's Andrew Carpenter will start the second contest in place of Happ in his second career game. The right-hander pitched a scoreless inning of relief in his major league debut against the New York Mets on Aug. 27.Carpenter, a second-round draft pick in 2006, was 1-0 with a 4.72 ERA in six starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Houston - Roy Oswalt (1-2, 4.50) Chicago - Randy Wells (0-0, 0.00)

The Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs will try to get a game in Saturday afternoon after last night's opener of a three-game series was postponed because of inclement weather.

The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 30 at 2:20 (et.).

Cubs novice right-hander Randy Wells makes the second start of his big-league career today. The Cubs are a half-game out of the top spot in a jumbled National League Central Division, trailing Milwaukee and St. Louis.

Wells, who reached the majors with four relief appearances last season, took his 2009 bow on May 8 against the Brewers at Miller Park and was solid, scattering five hits in five scoreless innings to get a no-decision in a game the Cubs lost, 3-2.

He was sent to Triple-A Iowa of the Pacific Coast League in March and recalled in early May when staff ace Carlos Zambrano went on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

He has never faced the Astros.

Countering for Houston will be ace Roy Oswalt, who is coming off his first win of the 2009 season. Oswalt beat San Diego on May 10 in a 12-5 victory, allowing four runs through six innings to improve to 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in eight starts this season.

The right-hander faced the Cubs on April 6 and suffered the loss after yielding three runs in seven innings of a 4-2 setback. Oswalt is 12-12 with a 3.88 ERA in 27 career games (26 starts) against Chicago.

On Thursday in Colorado, Michael Bourn went 4-for-5 with a double and stole home, as the Astros topped the Rockies, 5-3, in the rubber match of a three- game series at Coors Field.

Carlos Lee homered and Hunter Pence finished 2-for-4 with a double and RBI for Houston, which won the final two games of this set and has recorded a victory in five of its last six games.

Wandy Rodriguez (4-2) took the win after a strong seven-inning start, in which he allowed three runs -- two earned -- on five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high 11.

In Chicago, Bobby Scales finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored as the Cubs routed San Diego, 11-3, in the final test of a three-game set from Wrigley Field.

"I'm still in a stage right now where I'm trying to slow the whole game down," Scales said. "It's awful fast out there. There's still points where my mind is working too quick and it makes your body work too quick."

Reed Johnson and Geovany Soto also drove in a pair of runs while Aaron Miles collected two hits and drove in one for the Cubs, who swept the series and have won their last four games.

Ryan Dempster (3-2) scattered three hits and two runs with five strikeouts over his seven-inning start for the win. The right-handed also aided his cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and knocking in two runs.

Chicago has already won four of five from the Astros this season and is 6-1 in the last seven matchups dating back to last year.

Despite injuries to several core players, the Chicago Cubs have managed to get by thanks to some lesser-known contributors.

The surging Cubs look to win a season-high fifth straight Saturday in the opener of a rain-shortened, two-game series with the Houston Astros at Wrigley Field.

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez (dislocated shoulder) and Carlos Zambrano (hamstring) are on the disabled list, while first baseman Derrek Lee is dealing with a bulging disc in his neck. The rash of injuries has forced Chicago to rely on its depth.

On Thursday, 31-year-old rookie Bobby Scales had two doubles and drove in four runs, while Reed Johnson and Kosuke Fukudome each had two hits in Chicago's 11-3 win over San Diego.

Rain washed out Friday's game against Houston (16-18), and it was rescheduled for July 30.

The Cubs (20-14) are 10-3 in May and have won seven of eight at Wrigley, where they'll face Houston for the first time this season. Chicago is 4-1 against the Astros in 2009.

Fukudome is batting .462 (12 for 26) during a seven-game hitting streak and is 5 for 13 with a homer against Houston this season.

Scales, who spent more than 10 years in the minors, could be in the lineup again at third base. He's 8 for 18 (.444) with a homer and five RBIs in six games this season.

"I've said many times players in the large part make out the lineup for the manager," Lou Piniella told the Cubs' official Web site.

"Scalesie is swinging the bat. He wants some playing time."

Another reserve, Micah Hoffpauir, scored two runs Thursday and is batting .292 while earning more time as Lee continues to receive frequent rest.

Hoffpauir or fellow backup Johnson could be in the lineup Saturday as outfielder Milton Bradley serves a one-game suspension for allegedly brushing up against home plate umpire Larry Vanover on April 16.

Bradley is batting .194 on the season but .320 during a seven-game hitting streak.

Rookie Randy Wells (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who replaced Zambrano in the rotation, looks to build on his first major league start.

Wells allowed five hits and struck out five in five innings May 8, working out of a few jams in a 3-2 loss at Milwaukee.

"I learned a lot," Wells said. "I don't have to throw 100 mph. If I paint at 91 and change speeds, I'll be more efficient."

The right-hander will make his first appearance versus Houston, which looks for a third straight victory after winning 5-3 at Colorado on Thursday.

Michael Bourn had four hits and stole home while Carlos Lee homered for the Astros, winners of five of six.

The speedy Bourn is batting .455 (10 for 22) with six runs and five stolen bases in his last five games.

Lee is hitting .442 (23 for 52) with 11 RBIs in May, but is 3 for 18 against the Cubs this season. The veteran slugger, though, is batting .311 with 16 homers and 39 RBIs in 46 career games at Wrigley.

The Astros will look to veteran right-hander Roy Oswalt (1-2, 4.50) on Saturday and give Friday's scheduled starter, Brian Moehler, an extra day of rest.

Oswalt, who took a loss April 6 at home against Chicago, captured his first victory in eight starts Sunday. He beat visiting San Diego 12-5 despite allowing four runs for a second straight outing.

Oswalt is 2-5 in his last seven starts versus the Cubs despite a 3.81 ERA. He is 1-3 in his last four at Wrigley with a 6.04 ERA but threw 8 1-3 innings in a 3-0 win Sept. 1.
