Oakland Athletics (7-11) at Texas Rangers (10-10), 2:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Oakland - Dallas Braden (2-2, 2.52) Texas - Vicente Padilla (1-1, 8.27)

- Having won four of their last five games, the Rangers bats were probably a little sad to see last night's game get rained out. The pitching staff probably enjoyed the break, though.

Getting an extra day's rest, Vicente Padilla will start for the Rangers tonight in the finale of a now two-game set with the visiting Oakland Athletics.

A steady rain forced a delay of exactly one hour on Tuesday night in Arlington and with showers in the forecast over the next several hours, the game was postponed and is slated to be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 29.

Oakland's Josh Outman was scheduled to start opposite Padilla, but while the Rangers are simply just pushing all of their starters back a day, Outman won't start now until Sunday's series finale with Seattle. Dallas Braden will toe the rubber tonight for the A's instead.

Padilla has won his last five decisions against Oakland and hasn't lost to the Athletics since April 15, 2006, a span of nine starts. For his career, the righty is 5-1 with a 4.55 earned run average in 12 meetings with Oakland, 10 of which have been starts.

The 31-year-old hasn't exactly been pitching well as of late, however. Padilla has given up four or more runs in each of his last three starts and enters tonight's contest with a poor 8.27 ERA on the season. He did pitch a season- high 6 2/3 innings his last time out, allowing four runs in a no-decision at Baltimore this past Friday.

For Braden, he has split his first four starts of the year despite pitching to a 2.52 ERA. He took a tough-luck loss in Toronto on April 19 even though he allowed just a run in 7 1/3 innings of a 1-0 setback. The left-hander faced Tampa Bay on Saturday and earned a win behind a season-low 5 2/3 frames of work in which he gave up just a run on four hits and three walks.

Braden is 0-2 with a 5.12 ERA in six games (3 starts) lifetime versus Texas.

The A's probably weren't too disappointed with last night's rain out, as injuries have begun to plague the club. Infielders Nomar Garciaparra and Mark Ellis landed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday and expected staff ace Justin Duchscherer was transferred to the 60-day DL as well.

Both Garciaparra (right calf strain) and Ellis (left calf strain) left Tuesday's 5-4 loss to Texas, a game that saw four Oakland players in total exit early.

Also, Jason Giambi was not slated to start yesterday due to issues with both hamstrings. Instead, Eric Chavez was slated to start at first in his place. Chavez is normally a third baseman, but has been unable to throw across the diamond due to a strained right elbow. It is thought he would be on the DL if not for the injuries to Garciaparra and Ellis.

For the Rangers, they are likely to again be without slugger Josh Hamilton, as he has missed the last three games due to a strained rib cage muscle. Texas will likely decide by this weekend if he needs to be placed on the DL or not.

Texas won 12 of 19 encounters with Oakland in 2008, including six of the nine games played in Arlington. The Athletics have lost in 10 of their last 13 visits to Rangers Ballpark.

Toronto Blue Jays (15-8) at Kansas City Royals (11-10), 2:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Toronto - Brian Burres (0-1, 12.46) Kansas City - Kyle Davies (1-1, 4.88)

- The Toronto Blue Jays hope to avoid their first series loss of the season this afternoon when they wrap up a four-game set with the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

On Wednesday, Zack Greinke became the majors' first five-game winner and Billy Butler blasted his first two homers of the year and finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored in an 11-3 Kansas City win.

Greinke (5-0) allowed an earned run for the first time in 43 innings, yielding two runs on five hits and two walks while fanning eight in seven frames.

Mark Teahen had a two-run homer while Mike Aviles tripled, doubled and knocked in a pair of runs in the win.

Aaron Hill had a pair of hits, while Vernon Wells became the first player this season to record an RBI off Greinke, as the Blue Jays lost for the third time in five games.

Brian Tallet (1-1), in his ninth start out of 159 career appearances, was highly ineffective, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits and three walks in four-plus innings. He struck out two in the loss.

The Jays have yet to lose back-to-back games this season.

Hoping to avoid that for the Jays today will be left-hander Brian Burres, who will be trying to bounce back from an awful season debut on Saturday. Burres was pounded by the Chicago White Sox in that one, as he allowed six runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Burres is 0-1 lifetime against the Royals with a 3.75 ERA in three games (two starts).

Kansas City will counter with righty Kyle Davies, who is 1-1 this season with a 4.88 ERA. Davies was charged with the loss on Saturday against Detroit, as he surrendered seven runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Davies has faced the Jays twice and is 1-1, but has given up 10 runs and 15 hits in 11 innings of those outings (8.18 ERA).

Kansas City beat the Blue Jays the first two times the teams met last season, but Toronto won the final five meetings.

LA Angels of Anaheim (9-11) at New York Yankees (11-10), 7:05 p.m.

LA Angels of Anaheim (9-11) at New York Yankees (11-10), 7:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Los Angeles - Anthony Ortega (0-1, 7.20) New York - A.J. Burnett (2-0, 5.47)

- The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim try to extend their season-high winning streak to four games this evening when they play the first of four games against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

The injury-depleted Angels finished off a sweep in their brief two-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, as Torii Hunter and Kendry Morales hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh to help Los Angeles to a 3-2 win at Camden Yards.

Morales drove in the other run with a triple and Shane Loux (1-2) got the win as he gave up just one run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in six-plus innings of work.

Heading to the hill for Los Angeles tonight will be 23-year-old right-hander Anthony Ortega, who suffered the loss in his first major league start on Saturday.

Ortega, the Angels minor league pitcher of the year in 2008, surrendered five runs and five hits in five innings to the Seattle Mariners in his team's 9-8 loss.

Meanwhile, after a four-game losing streak, which included a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees have responded with consecutive wins, managing 19 runs in the final two games of their three-game set with the Detroit Tigers.

On Wednesday, Nick Swisher hit a home run from each side of the plate, totaling four RBI, as New York used a seven-run fourth inning and staved off a late Detroit run to take the rubber match from the Tigers, 8-6.

Hideki Matsui drove in three runs and Johnny Damon also knocked in a run for the Yankees, who had scored 10 runs in the seventh inning of their 11-0 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.

Joba Chamberlain (1-0) got the win after a solid performance which saw the righty go seven frames and give up a run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Robinson Cano finished 1-for-5 in the win to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 16 games.

Getting the ball for the Bronx Bombers tonight will be right-hander A.J. Burnett, who is coming off a disastrous start on Saturday against the Red Sox. Staked to a six-run lead at Fenway in that one, Burnett gave it all back, as he allowed eight runs and eight hits in five innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 16-11 loss.

Burnett, though, is 2-0 on the season with a 5.47 ERA.

The 32-year-old righty has faced the Angels four times and is 1-2 against them with a 4.50 ERA.

Tonight's contest will also feature a return to the Bronx for Angels outfielder Bobby Abreu, who spent the last two-plus seasons with the Yankees before signing in LA as a free agent this offseason.

New York first baseman Mark Teixeira will also be facing his former team for the first time. Teixeira appeared in 54 games for the Halos last season and hit .358 in his time with them, helping the Angels secure their fourth AL West crown in the last five years.

The Angels have had their way with the Yankees over the past few seasons, going 19-10 against them since the start of the 2006 season. Anaheim won seven of its 10 meetings with the Yanks last season, but split their four matchups at Yankee Stadium.

Boston Red Sox (14-7) at Tampa Bay Rays (8-14), 7:08 p.m.

Boston Red Sox (14-7) at Tampa Bay Rays (8-14), 7:08 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Boston - Josh Beckett (2-1, 6.00) Tampa Bay - Matt Garza (1-2, 4.97)

- The last time the Red Sox walked off the field in Tampa, they were watching the Rays celebrate their first-ever World Series berth.

Making its first trip to Tropicana Field since last October, Boston begins a four-game series with hosting Tampa Bay this evening in a battle between the first and last place clubs of the American League East.

After winning 10 of 18 versus Boston during the 2008 regular season, capturing eight of nine at home, Tampa Bay battled the Red Sox in the ALCS and ultimately won Game 7 at home to complete its worst-to-first run. Though they lost to Philadelphia in the World Series, the Rays had announced themselves as a player in the AL.

However, things haven't gone so well for the Rays to begin this year. They are last in the division with an 8-14 mark and have gone just 2-5 so far at Tropicana Field after going an MLB-best 57-24 there a season ago.

Boston, meanwhile, at 14-7 holds a percentage points lead over Toronto (15-8) for first place in the AL East.

Matt Garza was the winning pitcher in Game 7 of the ALCS last year, his second win over Boston in that series, and he will start for the Rays tonight. Garza posted a win over the Red Sox back on April 9 in the rubber match of a three- game set at Boston with seven innings of one-run ball.

Garza is 4-1 with a 3.40 earned run average in seven regular-season starts versus the Red Sox.

However, he enters this start having lost consecutive starts. The right-hander was tagged for seven runs in a loss to the White Sox on April 19, then allowed four runs on four hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings versus Oakland on Saturday.

The Rays have lost four of their last five after losing Wednesday's rubber match of a three-game series with Minnesota by an 8-3 margin. Evan Longoria drove in a pair of runs, while Scott Kazmir (3-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering eight runs -- six earned -- in four frames.

Jason Bartlett, who leads the club with a .368 average, left the game with tightness in his left hamstring and is day-to-day.

The Rays will take their swings tonight against Josh Beckett, who is coming off his worst outing of the season. Beckett allowed eight runs on 10 hits and four walks in five innings versus the Yankees on Saturday, getting a no- decision in his club's wild 16-11 victory.

The right-hander gave up two home runs in that outing, the first long balls he has allowed this year, and his ERA went up from 3.79 to 6.00.

Beckett bested Tampa Bay on April 7, a start that saw him give up only a run and two hits in seven innings with 10 strikeouts. He improved to 6-3 with a 2.93 ERA in 11 career regular-season starts versus the Rays and he went 1-0 in two starts in the ALCS, allowing 10 runs in 9 1/3 innings.

The Red Sox rallied from a 5-0 deficit on Wednesday to best Cleveland, 6-5, in 10 innings on Wednesday in the finale of a three-game set. Starting in place of the injured J.D. Drew (left quad tightness), Jonathan Van Every capped the comeback with his first-career homer in the 10th frame.

Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-5 in the contest for the Red Sox, who have won 12 of their last 13 games. Mike Lowell had a pair of hits and an RBI to stretch his hitting streak to 13 games. He is hitting .393 (22-for-56) over the run and the streak has upped his overall average from .154 to .317.

In addition to Drew, Kevin Youkilis was also out of the starting lineup after getting hit by a pitch in the back on Tuesday. Youkilis leads the majors with a .405 batting average.

St. Louis Cardinals (15-7) at Washington Nationals (5-15), 7:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Mitchell Boggs (1-0, 1.17) Washington - Daniel Cabrera (0-2, 4.42)

- The St. Louis Cardinals will resume their seven-game road trip tonight with the first of four straight games against the Washington Nationals in the nation's capital.

St. Louis won two out of three games against the Atlanta Braves and recorded a 5-3 victory in Wednesday's series finale. Starter Adam Wainwright improved to 3-0 this season and gave up three-runs --two earned -- on seven hits, while striking out two batters and walking five. Ryan Franklin earned his seventh save of the season after retiring the final four batters.

Slugger Albert Pujols had two hits an RBI and a run scored to help the Cardinals to their seventh win in nine tries. Skip Schumaker, Chris Duncan and Rick Ankiel each added an RBI in a winning cause. In injury news for St. Louis, Brendan Ryan had a double and run scored before leaving with a left hamstring injury in the fifth inning.

Cardinals young right-hander Mitchell Boggs gets the nod Thursday and is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA in two games (one start) this season. Boggs made his 2009 debut on April 17 at Chicago and gave up one run in two relief innings of his team's 8-7 loss.

Boggs then started against the same Cubs club on April 25, earning the win with 5 2/3 solid innings of work. He gave up one unearned run and six hits in an 8-2 victory over the division rivals. Boggs will now make his first appearance against Washington.

The Nationals are fresh off last night's 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of a three-game series. They ended a two-game slide and completed a six-game road trip with a 2-4 mark, as Anderson Hernandez led the way with three hits and a pair of RBI in a winning effort.

Ryan Zimmerman achieved a career-high with a hit in 18 straight games, ending with a double, walk, run scored and RBI for the Nats, who got two hits, an RBI and a run scored out of Elijah Dukes.

Scott Olsen lasted 5 2/3 innings to collect the win, yielding just six hits and one run to pick up his first victory this season. Julian Tavarez came on in the ninth for his first save of 2009.

The Nats will open a six-game homestand tonight with the Cardinals and Astros, who will visit Nationals Park for a quick two-game set.

Washington will hand the ball to Daniel Cabrera tonight and he has struggled to an 0-2 mark and 4.42 earned run average in four starts this season. Cabrera lost his most recent outing on April 25 against the New York Mets on the road, allowing five runs -- one earned -- over 2 1/3 innings of an 8-2 setback.

Cabrera, who has a pair of no-decisions sandwiched between losses, will make his first appearance against St. Louis. Washington has lost every game the righty has pitched this season.

St. Louis won five of six meetings with Washington last season.

Arizona Diamondbacks (9-12) at Milwaukee Brewers (11-10), 8:05 p.m.

Arizona Diamondbacks (9-12) at Milwaukee Brewers (11-10), 8:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Max Scherzer (0-2, 4.91) Milwaukee - Jeff Suppan (1-2, 7.32)

- Arizona Diamondbacks starter Max Scherzer is still searching for his first major league win and will get another shot tonight in the opener of a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

Scherzer went 0-4 with a 3.05 earned run average in 16 games (seven starts) in his rookie campaign a year ago, and is 0-2 with a 4.91 earned run average through three starts this season. Scherzer has dropped back-to-back trips to the mound and is coming off an April 25 loss versus San Francisco. He yielded four runs in 4 2/3 innings of his team's 5-3 loss.

The right-hander, who also lost to the Giants on April 19, faced the Brewers for the first time in his career on June 3, 2008 and did not factor in the outcome of a 7-1 loss. He came on in relief and allowed three runs and three hits in an inning of work.

Arizona just completed a nine-game homestand in which it posted five victories and concluded with Wednesday's 10-0 pounding of the Chicago Cubs in the finale of a three-game series at Chase Field.

Chad Tracy ended with three hits and three runs batted in to provide the offense, while Justin Upton chipped in two hits and three RBI for the Diamondbacks, who got a strong performance from starting pitcher Doug Davis. Davis won his first start at home this season by yielding just two hits and three walks over seven shutout innings.

Davis also struck out seven batters and issued three walks. Arizona will now kick off an eight-game road trip against the Brewers, Dodgers and Padres.

Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday thanks to an incredible effort by starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo. Gallardo helped the Brewers to their fifth straight sweep of the Pirates by pitching eight scoreless innings and belting his fourth career home run in a 1-0 win.

Gallardo struck out a career-high 11 batters and gave up just two hits and a walk for the Brewers, who have won eight of 10 games overall. Carlos Villanueva completed the shutout with a perfect ninth for his second save of the season. Milwaukee has now won 15 straight against the NL Central-rival Pirates and 18 in a row as the host in the series.

Taking the ball for the Brewers on Thursday will be Jeff Suppan, who is unbeaten (1-0) over his last two starts. Suppan defeated the New York Mets on April 19, allowing two runs in six innings of a 4-2 win, then recorded a no- decision against Houston on Saturday.

In the 9-8 victory over the Astros, Suppan was reached for four runs -- three earned -- in six innings of work to improve to 1-2 with a 7.32 ERA this season. The right-hander has faced the D'Backs eight times in his career and is 3-3 with a 4.43 earned run average.

Milwaukee went 5-2 against Arizona in 2008, with a three-game sweep of the D'Backs at home from June 2-4. The Brewers are 10-4 in the series since the start of the 2007 campaign and 6-1 as the host over that time.

Florida Marlins (13-8) at Chicago Cubs (10-10), 8:05 p.m.

Florida Marlins (13-8) at Chicago Cubs (10-10), 8:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Florida - Chris Volstad (2-0, 2.70) Chicago - Sean Marshall (0-1, 4.50)

- The Florida Marlins are trying to build another lengthy winning streak when they open a four-game series tonight against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Florida opened the season with an 11-1 mark before losing seven in a row to fall back to earth. After dropping the opener of a three-game series to the New York Mets, the Marlins rebounded with back-to-back wins and wrapped up the series with Wednesday's 4-3 victory behind Cody Ross' two-run single in the eighth inning.

Jorge Cantu had a solo home run and scored twice, while Wes Helms added an RBI for the Marlins, who are 2-1 on a seven-game road trip. Josh Johnson started on the mound and gave up three runs on nine hits in six innings of work in the no-decision. Renyel Pinto got the win for throwing a scoreless seventh.

The NL East-leading Marlins may get shortstop Hanley Ramirez back in the lineup on Thursday after the All-Star missed the last two games with a bruised right wrist. Ramirez was hit on his right hand in Monday's loss at New York and was kept out of the next two games.

Chris Volstad will try to keep his unbeaten mark intact when he toes the rubber for the Marlins this evening. Volstad is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four starts this season and is coming off consecutive no-decisions.

Volstad did not factor in the outcome of a 6-4 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday, as the righty surrendered three runs -- two earned -- and four hits over seven innings. He struck out six and walked one. Volstad, who won his first two starts of the season, is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two career starts against the Cubs.

Chicago is coming off Wednesday's embarrassing 10-0 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a three-game set at Chase Field. Cubs starter Ryan Dempster lasted six-plus innings, surrendering five runs on six hits and three walks to absorb the loss.

Ryan Theriot and Aaron Miles had the only two hits for the Cubs, who have lost six of their last eight games and completed a sox-game road trip with a 2-4 record.

The Cubs will hand the ball to Sean Marshall on Thursday and he is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in four games (two starts) this season. Marshall lost his last start on April 25 at St. Louis, allowing three runs and six hits in six innings.

Marshall, a left-hander, hasn't fared too well against the Marlins in his career as evidenced by his 1-3 mark and 4.38 earned run average in five appearances, four of which have been starts.

Chicago won four of the seven meetings with Florida a year ago.

San Diego Padres (11-10) at Los Angeles Dodgers (14-8), 10:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Josh Geer (0-0, 4.91) Los Angeles - James McDonald (1-1, 7.11)

- The NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers are back home after an extensive road trip and will host the division-rival San Diego Padres tonight in the first of four straight games at Chavez Ravine.

Los Angeles, which will also host Arizona, Washington and San Francisco on its current homestand, went 4-5 on the recent road trip, culminated by a 9-4 loss to the Giants on Wednesday. Orlando Hudson went 2-for-5 and drove in a run for the Dodgers, who have lost three of their last four games. Brad Ausmus and Juan Pierre also drove in runs in the setback.

Dodgers starter Eric Stults suffered the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Hoping to get Joe Torre's ballclub back in to the win column tonight will be starter James McDonald, who is 1-1 with a 7.11 ERA in four games (three starts) this season. McDonald is coming off the first win of his career, a 6-5 triumph over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

McDonald allowed five runs and four hits in five innings against the Rockies. The right-hander faced San Diego for the first time on September 23 last season in a 10-1 win and did not post a decision after yielding just a hit in an inning of relief.

San Diego has been experiencing its own struggles and has dropped four of five and seven of its last nine games, including Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a three-game set at Coors Field. Adrian Gonzalez had a big game go to waste for the Padres with two homers and three RBI, while Henry Blanco hit a two-run shot in defeat.

Kevin Correia started on the hill for the Friars and was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits in five frames. San Diego is currently 1-2 on a seven-game road trip.

Josh Geer takes the ball for the Padres on Thursday and he is 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA in two games (one start) this season. Geer made his season debut on April 19 at Philadelphia and did not record a decision in the 5-4 loss, allowing two runs -- one earned -- in seven decent innings of work.

Geer then came on in relief the previous time out on April 25 and did not factor in the outcome of a 10-1 loss to Pittsburgh. He hurled four innings of relief and permitted five runs and seven hits. The right-hander has never faced the Dodgers in his short career.

The 2009 series between LA and San Diego is tied at two games apiece, but the Dodgers have won six of the last nine meetings between the teams.
