DALLAS (AP) -- Authorities at Tarleton State University said they plan to investigate a Martin Luther King Jr. Day party that mocked black stereotypes by featuring fried chicken, malt liquor and faux gang apparel.

"I feel like there is no excuse for this type of ignorance," said Donald Ray Elder, president of the Stephenville school's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Photographs posted on social networking Web site Facebook.com showed partygoers wearing Afro wigs and fake gold and silver teeth. One photo showed students "mocking how African-Americans do step shows," Elder said. In another picture, a student is dressed as Aunt Jemima and carries a gun.

"That upsets me," Elder said. "That's someone who knows nothing about Dr. King, because Dr. King was totally about nonviolence."

Wanda Mercer, the school's vice president of student life, said an investigation was planned into the Jan. 15 party.

More than 400 students attended a university-sponsored forum Wednesday night that Elder described as "a shaky baby step" in bridging a divide between black and white students on the campus, which had about 400 black students out of 7,800 overall last semester.

Elder said he sensed a racial divide at the forum, with black students sitting on one side of the room and whites on the other.

"It was civil, but it also escalated into a shouting match," he said in a telephone interview afterward.

Some of the students shown in the photos apologized, Elder said.

University President Dennis P. McCabe said the photographs were reprehensible.

"I am personally insulted by these photographs and am disappointed that Tarleton students have demonstrated such insensitivity," he said.

Stephenville is about 60 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Funny how young people portray things as they see them on T.V. Many of those that will say this is the most reprehensible are the same that will support that exact stereotype in celebrity fields such as music, sports, etc... I mean what is funny about African-Americans that can be used in a friendly interraacial atmosphere as an anecdote to a joke made about a white person? That if we had a black President we would go to a twenty hour work week? I know you can't say anything about fried chicken or anything like that even though I know that all of my African-American friends eat the shit out of fried chicken, as do I. What, am I, as white person, allowed to say without being incorrectly labeled as a racist, rather than someone who finds humor in every aspect of modern society, allowed to kid around about? Because it sure seems to me that anything can be said or done in the name of humor about white people.
I don't even mind being called a white person even though I am Irish American. I am not that ridiculously sensitive.
I am not trying to say that I support the actions of the party goers, however, I do not find them offensive. I find them funny, albeit a bit tasteless for typical societal norms, but hysterical just the same. Aunt Jemima with a gun..........thats a hoot........Hell, I 'm not the person that created that image, just as I am not the person that created the image of a Catholic priest costume with a young boy attached to the zipper that I see every Halloween. Fuhking cracks me up every time, and I am a Catholic. I have attended a white-trash party for years on end and will dress up like many of my co-workers in Texas dress every day and find it to be hysterically funny to me. Stereotypes are always going to be a fact of life. People need to get over themselves already.

I do understand, and I agree with some of what you said....

People get so bent out of shape regarding stereotypes. Why do they exist? Because people notice that a large proportion of a given group of people exhibit the same behaviors. Hence, while stereotypes certainly do not reflect a group as a whole, in many cases it could very well reflect 80% or more of a given group.

There is nothing wrong with stereotypes in regards to a group of people.

We make judgements every day, based on our past experiences. If we know that a given group of people are 80% predisposed in a given behavior or direction, of course we will assume that any given person exhibits those qualities (whether those qualities are positive or negative).

It's just common sense. Stereotypes exist for a reason - they are not made up - they represent years of observations made by the public.

Why get all bent out of shape about something that is generally truthful?

Sometimes, I don't get it.

Of course, using stereotypes to label a given individual is wrong, and is a poor excuse not to get to know someone. It's good for general use, but not for evaluating a given individual.

This is less about 'people' and more about Texas. Texas is is the least developed and most immature state in the union. I feel bad for anyone that has to live there. It really should go back to being the republic it was in 1840whatever. ...Nothing good has ever come from that ungodly slice of planet earth.

....except Earl Campbell and Nolan Ryan - they were cool.

Smurphy,
Thank you for dumbing down the thread for us. Being the "Republic" that it was? Hey, Einstein, try to guess what other current country is a Republic? I am quite sure that you take great pride in the fact the "The Horse Whisperer" is the closest to any type of philanthropist that Montreal has produced as would I. You see smurph, birthplace of great people and great minds, such as myself, does not get credit for my upbringing, education, ambition or lack thereof, its just a name I see at the top of the newspaper that I read about idiots like you in every day. See thats the great thing about being a self sufficient, well educated, opinionated, confident man of the world, I can identified by my content of character and the qualities as an adult, rather than being born in Cook County Hospital in Chicago. I am sure you "Don't bother me I'm a local" t-shirt looks very good on one such as yourself, other than those bothersome saliva stains I'm sure, but I don't own one. So in the future, if youwould like to have some reasonable discourse with a member of the Greatest Republic in history, try to bring a smart friend with you. Idiot.

Always good stuff FDC!!

Smurphy,
Thank you for dumbing down the thread for us.

You almost definitely lost brain cells by reading his post, let alone replying to it:com:

He's great for such posts or licking Ponytail's anal ring during their little grab ass sessions in other parts of the forum.

His posts are of a bitter, hating little whore who's idea of "gambling" is taking it dry!

He's part of my personal "sexy six". 4 of which left long ago and this new dope Tom, whoever he is (I see candidate #7 on the horizen). I can't read anything they post and I'm much better for it. IE says don't sweat the little things and he definitely applies. With a train of thought such as his, you are really getting in physical and mental harms way trying to converse with the level of such bitterness. Maybe his pimp will be around to run cover for him (and get a little reach around in the process).

What am I allowed to say with out being incorrectly labeled? Not much, fatdaddy, not much at all. It is not a two way street.

Above the Clouds....
You know I looked at the pics and I really didn't see anything wrong at all, just an excuse to have a party. But then again I don't have a stick up my butt trying to find fault and blame about everything that goes on in this country. People have to lighten up.

The funny thing IO, is that I really haven't had any thing other than the above come from Smurph and, to his credit, he usually stays away from me. Thats not to say I won't have a great February to look forward to with him and his incredibly well thought out posts. To be honest with you though, it doesn't really bother me to rip some people like it may affect others. I really have no problem with it at all. Trust me, if I honestly thought that our friend from the north had anything more to offer anyone, in any country, on any level, anything at all more than maybe a mutated lab culture, if manipuated correctly, I would have put some thought into the post. His was just to easy.

It depends entirely on how much I drink. Now that I know how sensitive you and some others are about the Lone Star, I'm sure the temptations will rise in proportion to innebriation level. I sorta thought the Earl Campbell part would have been a rather transparent indication of nothing more than a joke. Obviously, Tabitha Soren rose from the ashes of that overgrown barbeque as well.

First of all, I don't speak French, nor do I throw down my weapon in times of stress, but to the best of my abilities of pretending to be French and simply dumbing down the language(oxymoron...........please look up......don't ask), I am thinking your statement translates very closely to "I do not know a single inhabitant of Canada that doesn't love the Habs". Secondly, I am hardly sensitive about the Lone Star state as, which was quite clearly stated earlier, I was raised in Chicago. This state like all others, even in their worst condition, has something to offer all. Except, the French of course. Not because they would reduce the water table with their obsessive hygeine habits or anything like that, no, its not that at all. You have to have something more to offer than smug stupidity and G?rard Depardieu.
The best I can figure is that I am entirely sensitive to extreme fits of anger when confronted by the French Canadian type. Either that, or there is just something about anyone that offers nothing more to society than an antenna ball, that really just pisses me off. I'm not quite sure yet, but drink up Potsie. I enjoy the quaint feeling of complete superiority I get when I read your posts. It really is extremely invigorating. Not quite as invoigorating as a freshly shorn scrotum, but invigorating nonetheless.

I am thoroughly pleased to provide you an exaggerated quaint sense of superiority through my drunken posts. Honestly, that fills my heart with joy that some dude with a great wigger rap name actually feels good by reading my intoxicated ramblings. At least I'm helping a brother out - as it were.

As for throwing down your weapon, I would never ask such a thing. Although just a precaution to you - another 7 posts with weapon in hand and you will probably be left with no toes.

Carry on fat daddy. Stay golden, pony boy. Stay golden.

Rester dor?.
