this guy used to be either a gm or scout in the nfl & is pretty astute when it comes to the nfl...

however, unless oakland gets a better qb than josh mccowen i don't see them passing on either russell or quinn. i also don't see peterson falling to #10...

By Pat Kirwan
NFL.com Senior Analyst

(March 28, 2007) -- After spending a few days with the general managers, coaches and an owner or two at the NFL owners' meetings in Phoenix this week, I have a much different perspective about where the draft is headed.

Mock draft No. 5 reflects the trade between the Falcons and Texans that sent Matt Schaub to Houston, the Eagles-Bills trade involving Takeo Spikes, and all the information floating around Phoenix. Free-agent signings are slowing down a bit but there are still a few personnel moves affecting the draft.

The top of the draft seems to have changed the most in the past week as teams seem to be settling in on their plans. As one GM said, "There is the potential for more trades than ever on draft day."

Note: Changes from the fourth mock draft are marked with an asterisk. There are two hypothetical trades in this mock draft.

1. **Oakland: Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech -- The Raiders have a lot of needs, but as long as quarterback is one of them, they have to respond by selecting the guy with the great deep ball, JaMarcus Russell. By passing on the opportunity to get Schaub in a trade, it looks like a quarterback is the pick -- but if the Raiders secure a QB like Josh McCown from the Lions, then here comes Calvin Johnson. Let's go with Johnson, the top-rated player on most draft boards!

2. **Cleveland (after trade with Detroit): JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU -- The Lions here could take Russell, Gaines Adams or move down, but it would not surprise me if it is a swap with Cleveland and the Browns take Russell.

3. **Detroit (after trade with Cleveland): Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson -- Now that they've traded down, the Lions could go in a lot of directions. I think they'll sit right here and take a quarterback later in the draft.

4. **Arizona (after trade with Tampa Bay): Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin -- There's no reason for the Bucs to move up if Calvin Johnson is gone at the top spot, so now they let the draft come to them. Joe Thomas would be a solid pick for teh Bucs even though they have Luke Petitgout, but they will seriously talk about Brady Quinn even though they have Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski and maybe Jake Plummer. I say Tampa moves down one spot with the Cardinals and lets them take Thomas.

5. **Tampa Bay (after trade with Arizona): Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas -- Quinn is still out there, but I say the Bucs are thinking Branch. The big defensive end is the eventual replacement for Simeon Rice and the Tampa defense needs an injection of youth.

6. Washington: Alan Branch, NT, Michigan -- There are a lot of rumors that the Redskins will trade out of this spot if they can get their hands on Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs. If they stay in the No. 6 spot, they could take Branch or LaRon Landry. If Chicago winds up in this spot, it could be for a defensive tackle like Amobi Okoye to pair up with Tommie Harris, or for quarterback Brady Quinn.

7. **Minnesota: Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame -- The decision to stay put and not move up pays off for Brad Childress and his staff. Childress gets a solid quarterback who should be a 10-year starter.

8. **Atlanta: LaRon Landry, S, LSU -- After trading Matt Schaub, the Falcons now are two spots higher at No. 8 and will take Landry if he's here. He is the best safety in the draft and should be a Week 1 starter. If not, it will be Amobi Okoye. Bobby Petrino is the new head coach and he coached the 19-year-old in college.

9. Miami: Levi Brown, OT, Penn State -- The Dolphins have not had a real solid left tackle since Richmond Webb. Brown will line up Week 1 in September and won't come off the field for 10 years.

10. Houston: Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma -- Houston moved down two spots in the Schaub trade and probably lost the chance to take Levi Brown, so the Texans call Peterson's name. Even though they signed Ahman Green, Peterson is the highest-rated player on their board at this point.

11. San Francisco: Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska -- Carriker is a great fit for coach Mike Nolan and his desire to build a solid 3-4 defense with high-character players. He plugs in as a rookie and holds his spot for eight to 10 years.

12. Buffalo: Patrick Willis, LB, Mississippi -- Willis is the best middle linebacker in the draft, and the Bills lost London Fletcher in free agency and traded Takeo Spikes to the Eagles. Willis recently ran under 4.4 in the 40-yard dash at his Pro Day and is a tackling machine. Don't be surprised if Buffalo moves down a few spots and goes in a different direction. For example, Carolina could jump up two spots and take Willis while the Bills drop down for Penn State's Paul Posluszny.

13. **St. Louis: Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville -- There was a lot of debate on the Rams' pick this weekend by club executives studying this every day. Last week it was Leon Hall, then Darrelle Revis turned in a 4.39 40-yard dash with his size, but a super-quick penetrating tackle is a great value.

14. **Carolina: Greg Olsen, TE, Miami (Fla.) -- If the Panthers wanted Willis, they would have moved up, but the Carolina decision makers seem very impressed Olsen. The Panthers need a linebacker but this crop does not impress them enough.

15. **Pittsburgh: Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh -- The Steelers could easily take an outside linebacker here, but the corner might have a higher grade. Mike Tomlin plays Cover 2; corners in zone are not as big a priority as they are for man-coverage teams. But Revis ran a 4.39 and is a solid player. By the way, the Steelers are staying in the 3-4 regardless of the rumors.

16. **Green Bay: Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU -- Questions are emerging about RB Marshawn Lynch. Bowe gives Favre another big target. The Pack will take a running back in the next round.

17. Jacksonville: Reggie Nelson, S, Florida -- Deon Grant is gone, so a starting safety is needed. There will be discussions about other safeties like Michael Griffin, but Nelson's personal workout should make him the choice.

18. Cincinnati: Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas -- The Bengals want a corner or a safety. Houston is a solid pick, but I wonder what kind of offense the team would have if Greg Olsen were selected here.

19. Tennessee: Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC -- Drew Bennett is gone and offensive coordinator Norm Chow needs a few of his "own guys." Jarrett scores touchdowns and is a very big target in the red zone. Some people have Jarrett out of the first round, but here's a guy who scored a touchdown once every five receptions.

20. N.Y. Giants: Lawrence Timmons, OLB, Florida State -- The free-agent market for linebackers became lean when Cato June signed with the Bucs. The Giants completed a transaction to acquire Kavika Mitchell, the Kansas City free-agent linebacker. But his deal is only for one year, so linebacker is still a priority. If Jarrett is still available, the Giants will think about it.

21. Denver: Jarvis Moss, DE, Florida -- The Broncos lost out in their pursuit of Patrick Kerney, so Moss makes some sense at this spot.

22. Dallas: Michael Griffin, S, Texas -- The Cowboys will look at the best corners, safeties and wide receivers at this spot. With three or four solid wide receivers and at least two defensive backs left with first-round grades, Jerry Jones will get a good player.

23. Kansas City: Ted Ginn Jr., WR, Ohio State -- The Chiefs really want a great defensive tackle at this spot but the draft board says wait -- because the best are gone. If Ginn does fall to the Chiefs, it will be a big day for the Chiefs offense. He will push the field and create underneath lanes for tight end Tony Gonzalez. He also has eight touchdowns on kick returns, and Dante Hall isn't the player he once was.

24. **New England: Leon Hall, CB, Michigan -- The Patriots worked out Hall last week and he just dropped into their lap. He's too hard to pass up at this point. Here comes the run on corners.

25. N.Y. Jets: Aaron Ross, CB, Texas -- The Jets need help in the secondary and on the defensive line, and now that Olsen is gone, they discuss the remaining corners and take Ross.

26. Philadelphia: Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno State -- The Eagles set up their trade with the Bills by signing free agent Monte Reagor so they could trade Darwin Walker, so now they will turn to a cornerback or safety. They will discuss Jon Beason, Anthony Spencer and Brandon Merriweather before taking one of the biggest corners in the draft and one who can match up with the big NFC East receivers.

27. **New Orleans: Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan -- The versatile lineman is moving up the board. With Greg Olsen gone and no defensive tackles available, the Saints take the tackle.

28. New England: Ryan Kalil, C, USC -- With two first-round picks and a very aggressive offseason in the free-agency market, the Patriots can afford to take the highest-rated center and not worry about the position for a very long time.

29. **Baltimore: Anthony Spencer, LB/DE, Purdue -- The Ravens lost Adalius Thomas and are prepared to play with the guys they have on the roster, but Spencer might fall to them and he is a perfect fit as a pressure player.

30. San Diego: Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee -- The Chargers need an injection of young receivers and Meachem looked fast and smooth at the Combine. If he falls to San Diego, this would be a steal for the team. If he doesn't and Dwayne Bowe is available, he's another great choice.

31. **Chicago: Jon Beason, OLB, Miami -- With Staley gone and Lance Briggs threatening to hold out, the Bears could go in a few directions. Briggs won't be signed to a long-term deal, so Beason will replace him. If Washington acquires Briggs and winds up in this spot, then I could see the Redskins taking a defensive lineman here.

32. **Indianapolis: Tank Tyler, DT, N.C. State -- The run on outside linebackers leave the Colts the choice of a DT or an OG. Tank can clog up the middle and help the run defense right away.

No. 7 pick offers many scenarios for Vikings

Spielman says team may swap draft slot if situation is right

Despite a glaring need at wide receiver, the Vikings could end up waiting until the second or third round of the April 28-29 NFL draft to select a pass catcher, and they might be willing to trade down in the first round from the No. 7 spot, depending on who's available. Vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman touched on those subjects and more during an interview Tuesday with the Pioneer Press.

Q: You said early in the offseason that the plan was to build this team primarily through the draft, not free agency. But with only three free agents signed, does that put added pressure on this draft to hit on almost every pick?

A: No. I think you're making a mistake (when you look at it that way). Regardless of what we did in free agency, we're still going to try to the best of our ability to get the best players in here that we can. There'll be a lot of different scenarios that we're going to face, I think, especially with the seventh pick ... on maybe moving up or down, depending on what happens in front of us. A lot of it will probably depend on what players are sitting at our pick. Do we want to take a player or do we want to go ahead and accumulate more picks?

Q: In addition to wide receiver, this team would seem to need a pass-rushing defensive end, a third cornerback and maybe a No. 2 running back and offensive line depth. Can you fill all those holes in this draft?

A: As we develop our board, there will be options at

positions, but I believe you have your best drafts when you stay true to your board. You can fill a need, but you're also going to take the best player available. ... We're going to take the guys that not only we think are worthy of that slot, but we're also going to take guys that are high-character, high-quality guys, without issues.

Q: Other than Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech, who's expected to be a top-four or five pick, is there another wide receiver worth taking at No. 7?

A: I'm not going to get into how we're going to have our board, but I think there are a lot of quality receivers and there are going to be a lot of quality receivers taken in the first day. So whether it's the seventh (pick) or the second round or third round, you can pick up a receiver, maybe in the second day as well.

Q: A lot of first-round receivers have taken some time to develop. Are you among those who think that's a position that can be filled just as well in a later round?

A: I think there are a lot of examples of guys that have come in the second and third rounds and had impact. We were fortunate to get Chris Chambers (in Miami) in the second round, and (Marques) Colston, who ever thought he would come out and do what he did (for New Orleans) as a seventh-round pick?

Q: You mentioned the possibility of trading down to accumulate more picks. What are the chances of that happening?

A: That's something we may look at, but if there's a guy we feel strongly about that's sitting there at No. 7, that this is a guy we can't pass on because he's going to make that much of a difference for us, then we're going to definitely take that player.

Q: Do you expect there will be much interest in the pick?

A: I don't know. I guess it depends on who's there. If there is, then I'm sure we'd be willing to possibly trade down, unless it's a player we think we absolutely have to have.

Q: This team hasn't had good luck with first-round defensive ends lately, with Kenechi Udeze and Erasmus James both struggling with injuries. Could that factor into the decision about whether to use the No. 7 pick on someone like Gaines Adams of Clemson?

A: I don't think that's what you focus on. If you think there's a Bruce Smith out there, you're not going to pass on a guy you think is going to have 15 sacks a year for you just because you had an injury history in the past. Every year is new and every year is different and every player is an individual case.

Q: With all the criticism of your free-agent signings, do you need to make a splash in the draft to give the fans something to get excited about?

A: The guys we end up picking are going to guys that we feel very strongly about as players that are not only going to help us this year but be future stars for us down the road. We're being very patient and very diligent. When we feel strongly about a player, we're going to go out and get that player. The guys that we did sign in free agency, we felt very strongly about. Just because they're not big-name guys, that doesn't mean they're not going to be good football players.

If I were Minnesota, I would try to trade the first and third round picks and maybe a player or 2 to move UP to the 3rd spot and take Calvin Johnson.

Possibly Smoot and one of the Viking back up RB's would be the players.

Minnesota desperately needs a WR with its first round pick, and I don't think anyone else is the caliber of a Top 7 pick this year (and CJ won't slip to seven).

monkeypants...

i would never make your trade if i were minny. you're giving up way too much for an untested player (although he may be a great player).

minny is more than one player away from being a title contender. from what i have read the wide receiver position is very deep in this year's draft. so if i was their gm, i would go after either qb quinn, de adams, or s landry with the #7 pick.

ESPN's John Clayton reports Oakland has entered into trade negotiations with Lions backup QB Josh McCown, who signed with Detroit last season with the idea of being a starter, but he lost his job early to QB Jon Kitna. Instead of pouting and sulking, though, McCown was a model teammate to a point where he helped out when the Lions needed someone to run some wide receiver routes. The Raiders have only QB Andrew Walter and QB Josh Booty as their main options at quarterback. McCown fits because he's had starting experience and he's mobile in the pocket. Plus, he has a strong arm for downfield throws

i read last week that minny is very high on landry from lsu. maybe they will take him with their first pick & take a qb later on...i also read that kolb has been impressing the scouts with his arm & his accuracy.

wow, no Marshawn Lynch in the 1st round at all?
I doubt that, but stranger things have happened, I suppose.

Sure wish the Greek would put up the
NFL draft prop lines. They have had the
props up for a couple of weeks but with
no odds.

anyone know of any other books that have these? Ever since The Greek implemented the ID on file to cash out rule, I refuse to play there.

I think things are very much up in the air, still, but I will be shocked if the Raiders pass on Russell. I have heard teams are getting higher on Quinn of late, and don't expect him to be around at #7. For the Vikings, Childress was very involved in the T. Jackson trade up pick last year, and I doubt he would undermine that with a top QB pick this year, but that's just a hunch. Wouldn't make sense, IMO. I have heard they are quite high on Adrian Peterson, and assume he would be their pick due to looking for an offensive impact player. Have also heard they love Landry, of late.

i think quinn will be taken by the browns....

i think minn. right now has a good runner (forgot his name) so i don't think they go for peterson....
i think landry would be a good fit for the vikings....but they have to watch a team...ie...falcons jumping in front of them to take him.

Chester Taylor is the Vikings RB, I think they get either Quinn or Landry. Probably Landry.

Taylor is a solid back, but last year was his first year as a full time back, and he definitely got dinged up - durability is a concern. And he is not a game breaker by any means. Adding an explosive back like Peterson would be worth the pick for a team with no home run threats at all. Hopefully they will add a good receiver or two in rounds 2-4.

Personally, I am hoping they take Landry, as I think their defense is close to being very good. They do lack the one playmaker on defense, and he is in the mold of Ed Reed...someone who can blitz, cover, and hit hard. They have three possibly good defensive players returning from injury (Greenway - LB, Tank Williams - S, Erasmus James - DE), and adding an impact defensive back who can blitz would make them pretty good on one side of the ball. The new defensive coordinator comes from the Eagles blitz scheme mold, and probably would love to have pro-bowl possible talent at safety like he witnessed in Philly.

Hearing a lot of concerns about Peterson's shoulder injuries being a problem, that he re-injured the collarbone in the bowl game. That's a bad injury for a running back to compete in the NFL with.
