The point guard position for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball team is a little blurry for the weekend.

The Mocs (2-5) will play Eastern Kentucky (8-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday in McKenzie Arena.

They may have to do so with limited participation from freshman point Farad Cobb, who practiced for the first time Thursday since getting poked in the eye last Saturday.

He spent the week wearing a solid patch taped over his right eye.

"It still doesn't look normal," said UTC coach John Shulman, who has gone the last five months without incumbent senior point guard Dontay Hampton due to a torn knee ligament.

But Shulman said Thursday night that Cobb will play.

Sophomore shooting guard Ronrico White has started each game at point guard and shared the duty of running the team with Cobb, who has averaged more than 19 minutes per game. If he is unable to play that much Saturday, those minutes will be shared by White and freshman walk-on Alex Bran.

"You go with whoever is out there, which is Ronrico and Alex," Shulman said before Thursday's video session and practice. "We're not going to stick [Cobb] out there if he can't see."

Shulman said White would not play all 40 minutes at point guard, but Bran -- who was a Mr. Football nominee as a quarterback at St. George's in Memphis -- has played only two minutes all season.

White said he could play every second if necessary and he's preparing to play more than his average of 23.7 minutes per game.

"If the team needs me to go 40, I'll go 40," said White, who leads the Mocs with 14 assists. "[Cobb] wants to get back. But I'm preparing myself in case he doesn't. It's about getting rest and eating right and staying away from candy and things."

Cobb spent the first two practices of the week on the sideline doing some dribbling drills and watching practice through his one healthy eye.

"My reaction is kind of slow because it hurts," Cobb said before practice Thursday. "I think I'll be ready. I can do a lot of things, but it's blurry."

Cobb is taking an optimistic approach.

"Each day it gets better and better," he said. "By Saturday I should be 90 percent, 100 percent, 110 percent."

Shulman wasn't as optimistic before practice, especially after scouting Eastern Kentucky's defense. He said the Colonels deny in passing lanes and pressure the ball when defending in the half-court, and having a scholarship point guard certainly would help.

"It's as much pressure and denial as I've seen in nine years," Shulman said. "It's challenging to make a pass, and we haven't done a great job of handling the ball. So we'll work on it and we'll be ready one way or another."

Shulman texted after practice, "He was fine." Later he added, "He will play."

Mocs facing big test after exams

Drazen Zlovaric took the last final exam of his college academic career Friday.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior wrapped up the fall semester and will have one class in the spring semester -- a research class.

"It's going to be about research and ball and that's it," said Zlovaric, who earned his degree in anthropology and sociology. "I'll be walking [in graduation] in May, take one class in the spring and write a paper on it. I tried to clear out my senior year to focus on basketball."

Freshman Gee McGhee took his last final of the semester Wednesday. He said he aced the psychology exam. Junior forward Zaccheus Mason took his last exam of the fall Friday in Media Writing II.

All of the Mocs will have another type of test tonight -- playing at 7 against Eastern Kentucky.

The Colonels will bring their perfect 8-0 record and stifling defense to McKenzie Arena and face a Mocs team that is 2-5 and has been offensively challenged most of the season.

"Our offense is a continual deal that we'll have to work on," UTC coach John Shulman said. "You can't get tricked by shots going in or not going in. Our execution at Kansas was great when the ball went in the basket.

"We've been average at best."

The Mocs rank 11th out of 12 Southern Conference teams by shooting 38.5 percent from the floor. They are dead last in 3-point shooting. They've made just 32 treys in seven games, and their .278 percentage from behind the arc ranks them No. 303 in the country.

Facing Eastern Kentucky, which is No. 38 in the nation in steals with 9.25 per game, is not a ideal time for UTC to find an offensive flow.

Shulman said after an 81-55 loss to Davidson that Zlovaric need to take more than the five shots he attempted and the three free throws he took. That may be easier said than done tonight.

"They pressure so much it's going to be hard to get it inside," Shulman said. "We have to do a better job of getting Drazen and [Mason] looks. Until we get more comfortable offensively, that's a great place to start."

The Mocs are in a stretch of playing only on Saturdays. They won 65-51 at Kennesaw State on Nov. 24, lost to Davidson last Saturday and host the Colonels tonight.

That's allowed plenty of time to tweak parts of the UTC offense, even with freshman point guard Farad Cobb missing some of that practice time. Shulman said he'll play tonight with goggles.

"We definitely need to improve our execution, and we go a while of time without scoring," Zlovaric said. "We worked on transition a lot this week, and it's a lot more structured and we emphasized getting the ball inside."

All of the clanked shots plus an increased emphasis on rebounding has the Mocs tied for sixth in the country with an average of 16.3 offensive rebounds per game and 24th in total rebounds per game.

UTC has had possessions this season in which the best shot immediately follows a missed shot.

"We put more structure into our break because it was kind of confusing and guys were spazzing," Mason said. "Now everybody knows where to be in the right spots."

Undefeated Colonels set to take on Mocs

The Colonels put their eight-game winning streak on the line tonight at 7 p.m. on the road against the Chattanooga Moccasins (2-5).

EKU is coming off its first road win, 63-57 over North Carolina Central Tuesday in Durham N.C.

The win gave EKU its longest winning streak since the 1964-65 team won 10 straight, and keeps the Colonels as one of only three remaining unbeaten mid-major teams and the only unbeaten OVC team.

The Colonels and Moccasins have only met one other time, a 68-54 Chattanooga win in the championship game of the 2009 Dr. Pepper Classic.

The Colonels will have their hands full tonight with a team that leads the Southern Conference in rebounding and comes into the game averaging 10 more rebounds per game than its opponents.

The Colonels have been out-rebounded by an average of 4.7 rebounds per game this season and have struggled on the offensive glass.

The Moccasins on the other hand have grabbed 12 more offensive rebounds than their opponents in each of their seven games this season.

Chattanooga is led by their inside tandem of 6-foot-5 Z. Mason, who averages 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds per game and 6-foot-9 Drazen Zlovaric, who is averaging 9.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, and 6-foot-5 freshman guard Gee McGhee who is averaging 10 points per game.

One of the Colonels? strengths all season has been its pressure defense, which has forced opponents into 8.4 more turnovers per game than the Colonels commit. Chattanooga comes into the game averaging 2.3 more turnovers per game than its opponents.

The EKU defense has limited its opponents to 30 percent shooting from behind the three-point line. The Moccasins have only attempted 29 three-pointers in their last three games, and are hitting only 28 percent of those on the season.

The Colonels have been very consistent shooting the ball this season, shooting 50 percent or better in five of the eight games and 49 percent in another.

Junior Glenn Cosey and senior Mike DiNunno continue to lead a very balanced scoring attack.

Cosey is averaging 17 points per game and is coming off an 11 point, four assist, four steal game against North Carolina Central last week, which earned him his second OVC Newcomer of the Week award.

DiNunno is averaging 14.4 points per game and had a team-high 21 points against North Carolina Central.

Corey Walden is third on the team in scoring, averaging nine points per game off the bench, followed by Eric Stutz with 8.6 points per game, Tarius Johnson averaging 6.9 points and a team-high 5.4 rebounds per game, Jeff Johnson at 6.5 points per game, and Deverin Muff and Marcus Lewis, averaging 5.3 point per game each.

EKU and Chattanooga have played on common opponent. The Moccasins beat Kennesaw State, 65-51, on Nov. 24, while the Colonels topped Kennesaw State 85-71 on Nov. 16.

The Mocs have played one other OVC opponent this season, losing to Southeast Missouri 77-65.
