the NFL has been wanting to expand for years so why not take this oppty to kill two birds with one stone (although my proposal makes way too much sense so i'm sure it will never be considered)

expand from 6 to 7 teams per conf
only provide the 1 seed with a bye week
give division winners auto berths + 3 wild card berths in each conf
seed teams according to records NOT division winners then wild cards
play 3 games on sat + 3 games on sun in round 1 with winners advancing (heck even play all nfc on sat and afc on sun throughout the playoffs so there are no short weeks)

basically you'd keep more teams involved, keep more teams motivated in week 16-17 and eliminate crap ass teams like arizona and minny and denver/sd from hosting games when they dont deserve to host (but they still make the playoffs)

make sense???

Disagree- think there are too many playoff teams now. I also think winning a division should mean something and get a benefit, else eliminate divisions altogether. As long as they schedule in this stupid format I dont think you can give a team an extra benefit as a wc because they got to play a suckass schedule and the only valid comparisons that can be made are within divisions.

sound nice in theory but each team plays over half of the teams in it's own conference so the schedules are essentially equal (funny though that the bad teams winning division this year ACTUALLY came from the worst divisions, az and sd, as opposed to the way you think it would happen listed above)

the divisions still represent something....an automatic playoff berth, rivalries and scheduling consistency......but to keep giving 8-8/9-7 teams home playoff games over 10-6 vs 11-5 teams is becoming a joke (and that's what you get with 4, 4 team divisions).

They sould switch the seeding format as is now

afc would be

tenn-indy-pit-mia-balt-sd

nfc would be

nyg-car-atl-minn-phily-az

I think the playoffs are perfect the way they are. I liked it better when there were only 28 teams and 5 playoff spots per conference, b/c then all 3 div winners got a bye. They should have stopped at 30 teams and 6 playoff spots b/c it worked out perfect for divisions.

One problem today is that divisions are so small, you only play 6 division games...instead of 8.

Its all about winning your division to make the playoffs. If you don't win the division, then you do get a 2nd chance to get in, but its only a chance. Every team controls their own destiny to win their division.

Yes, it sucks for Pats to go 11-5 and be left out. But if you want them to go instead of Chargers, then you can't have divisions.

New England benefited from a horrible division for years, being able to prepare for playoff run so much easier than other teams. They also benefited from an incredibly easy schedule this year and it almost got them in.

I like it b/c you know exactly what you have to do to make the playoffs. Win your division. You don't always know who is going to be good or bad before the season starts, but if you win your division, you are in.

And there is a still a chance to make it if you don't, but at that point, you have no control, no matter what your record is....
