CHANEY TO COACH IN 1000TH GAME WHEN OWLS HOST PRINCETON MONDAY NIGHT
12/16/2004
John Chaney
PHILADELPHIA - It will be a Millennium Moment in Temple basketball history Monday night (Dec. 20) when the Owls (3-5) host Princeton (5-2) on national television (7:00 p.m./ESPN2/WPHT 1210 AM) at the Liacouras Center. Hall of Fame coach John Chaney will become the 19th coach (fifth active) at the Division I level to coach 1000 games that night. It may be doubly special for Temple as junior guard Mardy Collins needs just 13 points to become the 41st Owl to reach the 1000-point plateau. Collins, who leads Temple with a 16.3 scoring average, enters play riding a 26-game double figure point streak. He also ranks third in the nation in steals per game (3.9 spg.).
Princeton will be Temple?s last game before a 16-day break in the schedule for the holidays. The Owls have played the nation?s toughest schedule according to collegerpi.com, and are ranked 29th by that service?s RPI. Besides Collins, Mark Tyndale (13.5 ppg.) and Dustin Salisbery (11.1 ppg.) also score double figures.
First-year head coach Joe Scott has Princeton off to an impressive start. The Tigers, winners of four straight, rank third nationally in scoring defense (50.1 ppg.) and 10th in field goal percentage defense (.362). Judson Wallace (13.3 ppg.) and Will Venable (10.6 ppg.) top the team in scoring. Only Wyoming has scored 60 points in a game against Princeton, that coming in a 64-59 double-overtime home win (11/22). Eighth-ranked Syracuse is the Tigers? other loss, 56-45, at the Carrier Dome (11/12).
