Basketball Vols Play Unbeaten Oklahoma State On Monday

KNOXVILLE -- After having a 10-day break between games, Tennessee will hit the hardwood for the second time in 48 hours when the Vols travel to Nashville to meet Oklahoma State on Monday at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.

ESPN2 will broadcast the game to a national television audience.
Tennessee is riding a four-game winning streak following a 93-79 win over Western Kentucky Saturday in Knoxville.

Chris Lofton led the Vols with 32 points while JaJuan Smith added 21. Tennessee shot 57.4 percent from the field and forced 21 Hilltopper turnovers.

The Vols also have wins over Louisiana-Lafayette, Murray State and No. 15 Memphis during the streak.

Oklahoma State is the first of two straight teams Tennessee will face from the Big 12 Conference. The Vols return home Dec. 23 to meet Texas at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Last year the Cowboys handed the Vols their worst loss of the season with an 89-73 decision Dec. 22, 2005, at the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City.

Lofton is leading the Southeastern Conference with 21.5 points per game. One of the top shooters in the nation, he is averaging 4.1 3-pointers per game and is connecting on 50.0 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. The junior from Maysville, Ky., is averaging 29.3 points on 57.9 percent (22-of-38) shooting from 3-point range over his last four games.

Tennessee will be playing its third game in the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville this season when the Vols take the court against Oklahoma State. UT played Fordham and UNC Wilmington in the NIT Season Tip-Off in November.

Pearl challenges Vols freshmen to improve

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee Coach Bruce Pearl didn’t waste any time today challenging freshman centers Duke Crews and Wayne Chism following the Vols’ 93-79 victory over Western Kentucky.

But the real challenge will come Monday night against 15th-ranked and unbeaten Oklahoma State in the Gaylord Entertainment Center.

“We are in deep trouble if those two don’t get it going, because Oklahoma State will bite their head off,” Pearl said.

Crews finished with eight points, three rebounds and three turnovers against Western Kentucky. Chism was a complete non-factor with no points and no rebounds in 12 minutes. The Hilltoppers out-rebounded the Vols by a 38-27 margin.

Even more disconcerting for the Vols is that their catalyst, senior forward Dane Bradshaw, is severely limited right now with a right shoulder injury that has been plaguing him since the New York trip.

He’s tried to play through the pain. But it was obvious Saturday as he held his right arm to his side a couple of times that he was struggling.

“He’s really hurting, really hurting,” Pearl said. “But Dane’s a warrior, and he’s going to continue to battle.”

The Vols have already done an X-ray on Bradshaw’s shoulder, and they plan to do an MRI on his shoulder Tuesday after the Oklahoma State game.

UT's Pearl plays to the crowd
Vols coach seeks larger turnout at GEC tonight

Tennessee Coach Bruce Pearl has put out an all-points bulletin for Vols' fans in the Midstate.

He wants them in the stands tonight when the Vols take on 15th-ranked and unbeaten Oklahoma State at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.




"I've heard from so many fans around the state that they want to see us play," Pearl said. "The state is so geographically spread out that I felt like it was important to play in Memphis every other year and in Nashville once a year at a neutral site to try to continue to develop our fan base.

"Our people in Nashville aren't used to going and seeing Tennessee basketball. It's not something they grew up with, as far as games being here in town every year. We're trying to change that."

This will be Tennessee's third game in Nashville this season. Their NIT Season Tip-Off games in November were sparsely attended.

The two-night event, which was run by the NCAA, wasn't very well promoted, and ticket prices much steeper than a typical UT home game also factored into crowds that failed to exceed 3,400.

Hope for improvement

The hope tonight among UT officials was to approach a crowd of 10,000 at the GEC, which seats more than 19,000 for basketball.

But unless there's a huge walk-up, 10,000 may be a tad ambitious.

As of Friday, ticket sales for the game were well below the 10,000 figure. The Vols' game last season at the GEC with Murray State drew 6,745.

Pearl thinks it will be a process for Tennessee basketball to start consistently drawing big crowds around the state regardless of where the Vols play.

They have a game with Western Kentucky scheduled in Nashville next December. And during the 2008-09 season, they're scheduled to play Middle Tennessee State in Nashville.

"At some point, we have to take a strong look at it and see if it's something that makes sense to continue, but I think it makes sense for me to try," Pearl said. "We'll evaluate it after a few years and see what the level of interest is.

"This is a neutral series we scheduled with Oklahoma State for ESPN, but I can tell you there was nothing neutral about Oklahoma City last year when they had more than 14,000 people in the building."

Cowboys start hot

Pearl said the Vols (8-2) can use all the home-court advantage they can get tonight against the Cowboys, whose 11-0 start is their best since the 1991-92 season when they opened the season with 20 consecutive wins.

Coach Sean Sutton, who took over full time for his father, Eddie, this season, was a senior guard on that team.

The Cowboys return all five starters from the team that handed the Vols an 89-73 loss a year ago. It was Tennessee's worst loss of the season.

"We all remember how physical they were down low and on the perimeter, and they're all returning," said junior guard Chris Lofton, who's averaging 29.3 points and shooting 67.8 percent from the field in his last four games.

"But we haven't backed down from anybody all season, and we're not going to now."
