Yimi Garcia will start Monday's game versus the Phillies.

Eric Surkamp had been expected to get the call, but he'll instead follow Garcia in what will be a bullpen game. Garcia hasn't started a game since 2011 in rookie ball.

from an April article by Sickles:

Garcia was signed by the Dodgers out of the Dominican Republic in 2009. He got beat up as a starter in rookie ball, posting a 7.04 ERA with 47 hits allowed in 31 innings in '10, but he moved to the bullpen full-time in 2011 and was much more effective, fanning 71 in 52 innings in the Pioneer League with a 3.10 ERA. He remained effective in 2012 (16 saves, 2.92 ERA, 82/22 K/BB in 52 innings), retained his momentum in Double-A (2.54, 19 saves, 85/14 K/BB in 60 innings), then thrived in the difficult Pacific Coast League last year (3.10, 69/18 in 61 innings).

And as mentioned above, he's been excellent in the majors.

With these strikeout rates you might think Garcia is blazing fast. That's not quite accurate. He's not a soft-tosser but his fastball doesn't burn the radar, topping out at 95 and averaging about 92. That's fine if your secondaries are solid and your command is good enough and both factors are true for Garcia. His breaking ball varies between 78 and 84 MPH; it is technically a slider though at the lower velocities PITCH f/x sometimes thinks it is a curve. He will throw an occasional change-up and has also been known to use a splitterish grip, though the third pitch is well behind the fastball and slider in frequency of use. His arm angle looks like it deceives some hitters and the stuff plays up.

Garcia throws strikes and looked very confident and composed in the PCL last year; obviously he's looked comfortable in the majors thus far. His stuff profile fits that of a typical middle reliever, but Garcia is very far from a mop-up type and he's getting a chance to close some games right now as part of the "cover for Jansen" bullpen committee.

Whatever happens when Jansen gets back, Garcia seems like a good bet for continued major league success, through a long-term job as a closer will depend on other circumstances.

another opinion stolen from the internets:

another opinion stolen from the internets:

Sean O? Sullivan goes for the Phillies and he deserves to be this big a pooch in many instances. However, against a 27-year-old career minor-leaguer, he does not. We featured Eric Surkamp but he's been scratched in favor of Yimi Garcia. That works too.

Yimi Garcia performed well during his first stint in the majors in 2014 and positioned himself to be a key part of the Dodgers bullpen. His K-rare and control marks have been outstanding over the past 3? seasons in spite of lacking a plus fastball. Garcia is effective by sequencing his mid-90s fastball, slider, and change-up. The slider shows good break and has become an effective weapon when Garcia needs a strikeout.

He throws with repeatable mechanics and generates good movement on his pitches due to a lower arm slot. With a solid command profile, repeatable mechanics, and a proven knack to limit home runs, Garcia has been called upon in 39 games this season and has posted a 3.82/3.03 ERA/xERA split. He also has 51 K?s in 35 innings while issuing just nine walks.

Garcia gets the call in place of Eric Surkamp, who is a late scratch. We can?t imagine for a second that he?ll be working more than three innings if he makes it that far. It?s one thing to come in and throw to one or two batters but it?s an entirely different animal when being asked to start and conserve energy. Garcia has always had a high fly-ball lean.

This year, his groundball rate is just 24% and his fly-ball rate is 55%. Pitching to one batter, he?s not much of a risk but stretch him out like the Dodgers are today and he becomes a huge risk. Garcia couldn?t even seize the closer role due to his lack of a dominant pitch. Though he worked as a closer most of his minor league career, his ceiling appears to be that of a setup reliever. Do we want to take back better than 2-1 on a setup guy that?s never started a game in the minors or majors? Damn straight we?ll bite.

Great info TerryRay:toast:

Just a note to add:

O'Sullivan has given up a run in the 1st Inning in each of his last 4 starts, in 6 of his last 7, and 8 of his 12 starts on the season.
