gethman...This is really too much to get into right now, but yes batter vs pitcher past history is a good tool to use if there is a history, but is also one that you have to be careful with. Remember, these players are professionals and there are a lot of pitchers and/or hitters that study film and make adjustments the next time around and sometime you can almost throw those numbers completely out...especially if they just recently faced each other. Other factors such as travel, home/road, ballpark factors, umpire factor could all figure in and make the batter-pitcher history useless at times. Like I said, it's just too much to get into.
I do think if it's the first time pitcher and hitters seeing each other that it favors the pitcher to a degree and especially if it's a veteran pitcher. Especially first 1 or 2 times around in the batting order. There are times you will see a rookie just called up sometimes pitch a gem his first game or get crushed and I think a lot of that just depends on the mentality of the pitcher. If he's can control his nerves, first time around he usually has the advantage.
All depends on the different game situations. Sometimes, it's better to not even try to cap these games.
