The new-look Houston Rockets used an up-tempo style to win their home opener. It remains to be seen if that approach will change their usual results in Salt Lake City.

The Rockets will try to earn a rare road win over the Utah Jazz as the teams meet Monday night, with Utah looking to tighten up its defense after struggling to start the season.

With Ron Artest gone and Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady out with injuries, other players have stepped up for Houston (2-1).

Newcomer Trevor Ariza scored a career-high 33 points in a 111-107 win over Portland in the Rockets' first home game Saturday. Point guard Aaron Brooks sparked his team's fast-paced attack with 28 points and eight assists.

"We've got a pretty young team and we've got a bunch of new faces on this team so the scouting report is not that big," said reserve Carl Landry, who scored 16 points. "We've got guys that are hungry who are going out there every night and fighting hard to get us in the 'W' column."

One of them is Ariza, who won an NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers last season before switching places with Artest through free agency.

Ariza is shooting 52.4 percent (11 of 21) from 3-point range and averaging 23.3 points in his first three contests with his new team, as his game seems to be working well with Houston's quicker style.

"If that's what it takes for us to win then that is how we need to play," Ariza said. "No matter how tired we are, no matter what the situation is or what the odds are. If we want to win, we have to play that way every night."

It may be tougher to run against the Jazz at Salt Lake City's high altitude, but few strategies have worked for the Rockets in Utah. Houston has lost three straight and 21 of its last 24 at EnergySolutions Arena dating to 1997, not including a 2-10 postseason record there in that stretch.

The Jazz (1-1) have been especially tough at home recently, going 102-22 since the start of the 2006-07 season.

They beat the Los Angeles Clippers 111-98 in their home opener Friday, but weren't thrilled after allowing 84 points in the first three quarters and trailing by one entering the fourth.

Utah, which came into the season with a renewed focus on defense, also struggled to slow down Denver in a season-opening 114-105 loss, but held the Clippers to 3 of 11 from the field in the final 12 minutes.

"That's what we need to see more out of us," forward Paul Millsap said. "We're capable of doing that night in and night out. We need to continue to execute and get stops on the defensive end."

The Jazz hope to have Mehmet Okur back in the lineup after the center missed Friday's game with a sprained ankle.

The Rockets' defensive focus will likely be on point guard Deron Williams, who averaged 22.8 points and 12.0 assists in four games against Houston last season.

Monday, November 2nd (All times eastern)
Minnesota Timberwolves (1-2) at Los Angeles Clippers (0-4), 10:30 p.m.

It doesn't rain often in southern California except when the Clippers are involved.

The NBA's living embodiment of Murphy's Law takes to the hardwood again Monday in search of its first win of the season as the Minnesota Timberwolves invade Staples Center.

The Clips, who continue to toil without the No. 1 overall pick Blake Griffin, fell to 0-4 on the young season in LA on Saturday.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds in that one, as the Mavericks edged the Clippers, 93-84.

Chris Kaman had a career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds for Los Angeles, which has dropped its first four games of the season. Eric Gordon added 16 points, while Sebastian Telfair ended with 12 points and five rebounds off the bench in defeat.

"We came out in the third quarter and took some bad shots. We weren't moving the ball like we did in the first half. We had opportunities to score but we didn't do a good job of it," Los Angeles head coach Mike Dunleavy said.

Griffin remains on the sidelines with a broken left kneecap and should be out for the next five weeks or so.

The Wolves, meanwhile, opened a short two-game road trip on a losing note Sunday in Phoenix when Grant Hill poured in 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, as the Suns hung on to beat Minnesota, 120-112, at US Airways Center.

Ryan Gomes hit 10-of-13 shots from the field, on his way to 23 points and 15 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who were also coming off a loss to the Cavaliers on Friday.

Al Jefferson added 21 points and eight rebounds. Corey Brewer had 19 points and seven rebounds. Jonny Flynn ended with 11 points in defeat.

Minnesota took two of its three meetings with the Clippers last season, including both tilts at Staples Center.

With an injury to their No. 1 overall draft pick and four consecutive losses, it was a difficult first week of the season for the Los Angeles Clippers.

They'll look to change their fortunes Monday night, when they try to snap a three-game home losing streak to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Drafting Oklahoma forward Blake Griffin with the first selection in the draft was supposed to help turn around the fortunes of a Clippers franchise that's been to the playoffs four times since 1976. After the team confirmed a stress fracture in Griffin's left kneecap last Monday, though, Los Angeles opened the 2009-10 campaign with last season's consensus college player of the year sidelined up to six weeks.

"He could play on it, but it won't get better,' Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Once that became apparent, there was no question: Let's shut it down. Him playing at a lesser level isn't going to do us much good.'

Without Griffin, the Clippers find themselves where they were last season: 0-4.

Los Angeles snapped its six-game slide to open 2008-09 with a victory over Dallas, but the Clippers couldn't repeat that effort this season, falling to the Mavericks 93-84 on Saturday.

Center Chris Kaman grabbed 11 rebounds and scored a career-high 27 points, but his hook shot with 4:41 left was Los Angeles' only field goal in the final seven-plus minutes.

"We need to start playing harder in the fourth quarter,' second-year guard Eric Gordon said. "We also need to do a better job of stopping the other team on defense. We had a couple of good runs and a few leads, but they made big plays and made the tough shots in the end."

Kaman missed the first two games against Minnesota last season with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, and also did not play in an 87-77 loss to the visiting Timberwolves on April 7 due to flu-like symptoms.

Gordon hit five 3-pointers and scored 28 points in that game - the Clippers' third straight home loss to Minnesota.

The Timberwolves (1-2) make their first visit to Los Angeles this season following Sunday's 120-112 loss at Phoenix.

Minnesota pulled within 110-105 with 3:13 left on Ryan Hollins' jumper, but the Suns outscored the Timberwolves 8-2 until Ryan Gomes' 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining.

"These guys are young,' said first-year coach Kurt Rambis, who returns to Los Angeles, where he was a Lakers assistant for 10 years. "Without experience or knowledge, they don't know how to play against them (the Suns). They don't understand all the nuances of playing a team like that. Late in the game, we gave ourselves a chance. But they made a couple of shots down the stretch.'

Gomes had 23 points and 15 rebounds while teammate Al Jefferson scored 21 and shot 9 of 23. Still working his way back from an Achilles' injury, Jefferson played a season-high 33 minutes.

He averaged 24.0 points and 12.5 boards in the first two games against the Clippers last season before missing the April 7 matchup with a torn ACL.

Minnesota is shooting 41.7 percent from the field, including 28.1 percent from long distance.

The Clippers are 0-4 for the fifth time in their history.
