virginia commonwealth.....very much an anti-georgia tech situational play. jackets started off the season with a string of tough games. won em all. then had a month of absolute cakewalk contests. this game here is the last in that month-long string of games. tech lines are as inflated as theyll be all season right now. after this one vs. vcu, the real litmus test for georgia tech begins (games on the road vs rival georgia, then at carolina followed by games vs. maryland and wake forest). really sense this as a flat spot for the jackets, especially coming off the heels of a 50-point thrashing of marist a few days ago. not easy to blow consecutive opponents out like that, especially when much bigger games are around the corner in the coming days. vcu is a perennially solid program. theyve been a little erratic this year, but i would back the rams again and again in this spot. just think tech is gonna be 'bored' in this game and vcu stays within 12-15 points.
wisconsin-milwaukee....wisconsin-milwaukee playing a bit below their potential right now. they finally showed some life with a good win over uic last week. hopefully that will get em back in the right direction. i just cant take this santa clara team seriously for a simple reason: they just camp out at the 3-pt line and jack 3s all game. all teams who use the 3pt line to their advantage play from the inside-out. (work it inside - kick it out) their 3pt attempt/2pt attempt/ratio is really out of whack. fellow hoopers and coaches should know where im coming from. clara has attempted 666 shots this yr and 234 have been from 3pt land. thats 35% of their shot attempts. thats a pretty obscene number. most teams are in the 26-30% area. to translate that: they settle for far too many jump shots and dont take the ball to the basket nearly enough to draw fouls and get to the line. if clara isnt hitting, theyre in trouble because uwm likes to get the ball up and down the floor. the way you can beat em is inside on the interior. clara abhors that kind of play. just dont see clara keeping up in this game. not trying to compare uwm's talent to oregon, but their style/pace are similar and clara just couldnt keep up in that one. i think they wear down in the 2h and uwm wins by 5 or 6 points.
