just some pertinent notes:
"st.louis is not the same team on grass"
above statement is not a fallacy as many believe. it hasnt mattered whether warner has been the qb or not. rams simply a different team off the carpet.
rams on grass this year (2003):
rams (-7) at arizona........won 30-27
rams (-6) at chicago........won 23-21
rams (-4.5) at frisco.........lost 10-30
rams (+1.5) at pitts.........won 33-21
rams (pk) at nyg..............lost 13-23
rams on grass last year (2002):
rams (-3) at denver........lost 16-23
rams (-3) at tampa.........lost 14-26
rams (+7) at frisco..........lost 13-37
rams (-4) at arizona........won 27-14
rams (-3.5) at wash........lost 17-20
rams (-1.5) at philly........lost 3-10
rams (+4.5) at kc............lost 10-49
rams on grass (2001):
rams (-3) at philly...........won 20-17
rams (-6.5) at frisco.......won 30-26
rams (-7) at jets............won 34-14
rams (-8) at neng.........won 24-17
rams (-12.5) at caro.....won 38-32
*assuming math is correct, thats 3-12-1 ATS on grass the L3 yrs
*rams also allowing 23.9 ppg on grass (if you look at some of the pt totals theyve allowed to clearly inferior foes, its shocking.
some browns notes:
*theyre playing for nothing but pride. there IS a division on this team between certain players and coach davis. for someone to say otherwise, theyd be lying. not exactly a harmonious locker room. kevin johnson already gone. couch is 99% gone after the season. mccutcheon likely gone. northcutt a free agent whose future with the browns is up in the air. browns have tried unsuccessfully to work a deal with him to keep him here. gerard warren clearly underachieving and his contract is killing them.
*lots of chaos within the organization, but have heard/read many clowns players saying this game is their super bowl and have actually heard a couple of guys on defense flat out say "theres no way in hell were going to get embarrassed on monday night".
obviously, every professional athlete is going to say something along those lines. you dont expect them to "lou holtz themselves" and say "we are gonna get crushed". have also heard some "we gotta win this game or were never gonna get back on monday night" (which is true. browns havent had monday nighter at home in forever. a bad showing here would all but guarantee many dates of "sunday afternoon oblivion" in the coming year or two). have also heard the ubiquitous urban mantra uttered by many players: "my boys back home are gonna be watching. we dont want to have a bad showing". problem is, rams have "boys back home" too, but i guess its nice to know browns have some pride. they havent shown much of it this season. perhaps its latent pride.
*browns defense truly one of the more enigmatic units youll find in professional sports.
indianapolis didnt score a touchdown on the browns defense. manning threw for just 211 yds
frisco didnt score a touchdown on the browns defense in frisco.
garcia threw for just 198 yds
browns scoring defense at home has been pretty good. theyve allowed games of 9,21,7,26,6,13. (average of right around 13 ppg, not bad at all)
the browns defense wont elicit memories of the '86 bears however. jamal lewis ran for a billion yards. ladanian tomlinson ran for 200+. seahawks had the video game trifecta --- hasselbeck threw for 300+, alexander ran for 100+, and seattle had two receivers catch balls for 100+.
figuring out the browns defense is impossible. there is a ton of speed and talent on their D. their young linebackers are super fast. andra davis looks like a star in the making. theyve had games where good teams have done jack shit. but they also have had clunkers where they get absolutely abused. just a matter of which one will show
so my forecast for the game?
i dont have one. there are too many ways to look at this one.
rams have been terrible on grass.
browns out of the playoff race and have grossly underachieved this year.
neither tim couch nor kelly holcomb is the answer in cleveland (houston- you wanna deal your rights to drew henson PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE?)
but browns just have this uncanny way of showing up when you write them off.
oh yeah --- i played quincy morgan to score the game's 1st touchdown at (+900). browns love to go to morgan early for the homerun ball. hes their most explosive deep threat. and who knows, the last time the browns were on monday night, kosar hooked up with andre rison for a 95-yd touchdown pass.
gl and enjoy the game. just wanted to offer a contribution to the board. hopefully some guys can take something from the above stuff and apply it to their MNF play.
also found this kenard lang quote pretty funny:
"They put up 50 points [48 to be exact] against Minnesota last week," said defensive end Kenard Lang. "If we let them run wild, it's going to be ridiculous. We thought there was booing and bottle throwing a couple years ago? Imagine what will happen if they put up 50 on us. Fans will probably try to run their cars into the stadium."
not gonna try and play resident meteorologist. weather expected to be in the low 30s. dont think theres gonna be any precip, but with the stadium right on the lake, you can always count on it being a few degrees colder there.
