Game Preview (from covers.com)
The Oakland Raiders are mired in a losing skid and need a victory, but wins haven't come easily in this heated NFC West rivalry.
The Raiders have dropped four in a row straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS), and travel to Denver to meet the Broncos in this week's Monday Night Football contest. Denver is 8-1 SU and 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings between these familiar rivals, including 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS marks in Denver over that stretch. The Broncos are also coming off a bye week and are 3-0 ATS after their three most recent off-weeks. The team is a moneymaking 10-3 ATS following bye weeks since 1992.
After four consecutive SU and ATS wins to open the season, many considered Oakland the NFL's best squad. Now, the Raiders are an even 4-4 SU and ATS, and are struggling on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Oakland has scored just 17 points on average over its last three games, despite racking up nearly 350 yards of total offense. And the Raiders 'D' has surrendered 363.3 yards and 23.3 points per game over that three game span.
Oakland will look to turn things around against a dominating Broncos defense, which ranks third in the league in total defense, allowing 270.8 yards per game. And Denver's run defense is the NFL's best, halting opponents' ground attacks at 75.4 yards per outing.
The Raiders will need to find a way to rush against the Broncos if they want to duplicate their early season success. Oakland averaged 40.5 points per contest through its four wins, when its pass-run ratio was a relatively even 169-105. That ratio moved toward 3-to-1 in the most recent four contests (173-67), in which the Raiders have averaged a measly 16 points per outing. To make matters worse, Oakland is rushing for just 67 yards per contest, over its last three.
The Broncos' 6-2 SU mark enters Week 10 tied as the AFC's best record. However, the Raiders have risen to the occasion in recent years, going 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games versus teams with winning records.
Denver has won two straight games, but snagged the cash in only one of those outings. The Broncos are 2-8 ATS after two consecutive SU wins, since the beginning of the 2000 season.
The Raiders will be without talented cornerback Charles Woodson, who is out with a hamstring injury.
The Broncos are 5-2-1 SU when Oakland comes calling on a Monday night.
Oddsmakers have Denver as a 5 1/2 point favorite and the 'total' is set at 46 1/2.
