Riedling quotes.....

Riedling quotes.....

John Riedling will start tonight's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

So are you excited, John?

"Oh, yeah," he said. "It's what I've always wanted. It's an opportunity. I want to make the most of it."

This is most likely a one-shot deal for Riedling - at least in the short term. He is only starting because Chris Reitsma was scratched from his Sunday start with biceps tendinitis, and the Reds don't think one extra day is enough to recover. Riedling, however, knows that a solid start would plant a seed in the minds of the Reds brain trust.

"It may help for future considerations," he said.

Riedling, a 27-year-old right-hander, hasn't started a game since 1998 when he was in Double-A. Riedling has made 88 appearances in relief in the majors.

His 2.95 career ERA speaks to how good his stuff is.

"They know I have the kind of stuff to go through a lineup three or four times," Riedling said.

The Reds didn't make the decision on Riedling until after Sunday's game. The Reds would have had to come up with another plan if Riedling had to pitch in relief.

But starter Ryan Dempster went 5 1/3 innings, Gabe White 1 2/3 and Scott Sullivan went one. That left the bullpen sufficiently loaded for tonight. Riedling went 64 pitches Wednesday in relief. He could exceed that tonight.

"It's not pitches as much as the long innings," he said. "When you throw a lot of pitches in one inning, it can really get to you."

Ken Harvey (Royals) should be ready to return from his back spasms for tonight's game, according to the KC Star.

Carlos Beltran (Royals) likely will miss at least two more games due to his sore right shoulder, according to the KC Star. The Royals don't expect him to need an MRI at this time.

Irritation in the left eye of Trot Nixon (Red Sox) kept him out of yesterday's game, but he should be available today, according to the Boston Globe.

The (Orioles) plan to recall Travis Driskill (P) from Triple-A Ottawa today, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Diagnosing Wade Miller

Diagnosing Wade Miller

If Wade Miller's velocity were down or if he'd simply lost command of the strike zone, the Astros might be worried. Because he's still throwing hard, they're more baffled than worried after Miller's winless April.

During an 11-1 loss to the Braves last week, Miller sailed through three innings before leaving too many pitches up in the strike zone. In the game before that, a 7-4 loss to the Mets, he was missing low.

"His delivery looks the same to me," manager Jimy Williams said. "But the results are not what he wants. His velocity is pretty good, so it comes down to location."

Miller's solution to an 0-3 start has been extra work in the bullpen. He hopes to pound one pitch after another and rediscover his comfort level.

A National League scout who watched him last week offered this assessment: "He's still got good stuff, but for some reason he's out of whack with his control. Everyone goes through stretches like that. He'll get it back."

ie, where do the weather reports come from in your game summarys above? it's the houston game i'm most interested in. weather channel and weather underground both have tonight's wind out of the south decreasing to 10-15 mph, dead in from center @ astros field. in the past i've found their concurrence to be fairly reliable.

thanks ie; i am really wanting to play hou/pit under tonight. i'm looking at last year and pitt stopped in hou twice for four game sets after a west coast road swing. pirates scored a total of 14 runs in those 8 games, and 7 of 8 went under. if miller gets a decent draw at hp ump tonight this could be his chance to turn things around.

hopefully for cubs backers at their price won't come down to this....

wire.....

The Chicago Cubs got the most important component of their bullpen back Monday when they activated closer Antonio Alfonseca from the 15-day disabled list.

Alfonseca, 31, was placed on the DL March 29, retroactive to March 21, after suffering a strained right hamstring during a March 18 Cactus League game against Seattle.

Acquired from Florida along with righthanded starter Matt Clement as part of a six-player deal before the 2002 season, Alfonseca was 2-5 with 19 saves in 28 opportunities and a 4.00 ERA in 66 appearances last season.

In Alfonseca's absence, Chicago's bullpen has converted six saves in seven chances. Joe Borowski has five and Alan Benes has one.

To make room for Alfonseca, the Cubs designated Benes for assignment. Benes was recalled from Iowa of the Pacific Coast League (AAA) on April 16 to replace injured reliever Dave Veres and made three appearances.
