A's at Yankees Mulder/Clemens -120/7.5
A little time on my hands today, so I'll run you through some thoughts that I factored into tonight's game.
Mulder, very hot pitcher with all the stats to back it up.
Clemens:
Health questionable, but reported improving.
0-3-1 last 4 games.
0-4 last 4 playoff games vs Oakland.
NYY:
No team in the history of baseball, has EVER come back from a 0-2, at home, in a 5 game series.
Left handed batters for the New York are .188 last ten games.
NYY 5-5 last ten games.
Oakland 8-2 last ten games.
I'm playing:
NYY -120 4 units
Reasons:
Streak is your friend. Experience!
Clemens should be fresher, going home early yesterday. I understand it would look foolish to send Mulder to New York when Oakland could have finished it yesterday.
Home field, and one can argue the opposite with last years's results.
Jermaine Dye is of course out, but that puts added pressure on the aready 3-14 Jason Giambi. Let's also remember the A's were mired in 3rd place with little chance of making the playoffs before Mr. Dye arrived.
Finally, I looked over the Yankees bullpen very carefully. Especially if Clemens should pull up hurt early.
Of course, both teams will be willing to throw the entire staff if need be, but this was the swaying factor for me.
Bullpen for the Yankees, and don't think for a minute Rivera won't pitch for a couple of outs if needed:
Stanton 0.00 ERA, L3, 3.1 IP
Wohlers 0.00 ERA, L3, 4.0 IP
Choate 0.00 ERA, L3, 2.1 IP
Witasick 4.50 ERA, L3, 2.0 IP (1 run)
Rivera 0.00 ERA, L3, 4.0 IP
Granted the A's have some very good bullpen stats also, but I'll take this much more experienced bullpen anytime. Especially in a big game five at home.
That's my take and gl!
