The ball has been kicked off officially now, and another NFL season has begun. Each week I'll be offering up my handicapping advice focusing on at least one game per week. Units range from 1 to 5.
Season Stats:
NFL 0 - 0 .000 0 units
Game: Detroit at Chicago
Time: Sunday, Noon CDT
Pick: Detroit +3 (3 units)
The Detroit Lions have high hopes for 2004 despite posting the NFL's worst record over the last 3 years. The Lions look to end a 24-game road losing streak when they open the season at Soldier Field against the Chicago Bears.
QB Joey Harrington finally has some help in his second years with the West Coast offense.
WR Roy Williams and RB Kevin Jones were Detroit's two first-round draft picks and they're expected to provide a spark.
All the Lions need to do is play field position and avoid giveaways. Chicago's offense is comparable to Notre Dame's! There is no way the Bears will score more than 10 points on their own. The only chance they have is turnovers coupled with special teams blunders by the Lions. Detroit has been doing the game plan quietly for weeks.
Look for Harrington to dink and dunk short yardage, and then air it out when the Bears tighten up. TE Steven Alexander could be a big factor, and he isn't getting talked about much.
I predict that the 0-24 streak comes to an end.
