Need Fewer Troops?

Wednesday, November 30, 2005

By Brit Hume

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

Massachusetts Senator John Kerry came out firing in his response to the president's plan for victory in Iraq, saying that the presence of U.S. troops, "presents food for the insurgency. And you need to reduce that presence." But just five months ago, Senator Kerry argued exactly the opposite. During a June TV appearance, Kerry said U.S. generals were telling him, "We don't have enough troops in Iraq," and "There aren't enough people on the ground,? adding, "The way you honor the troops and the way you provide a policy to America is to do everything possible to win."

Where's Joe?

Connecticut Democrat Joe Lieberman, who just returned from Iraq, defended U.S. efforts there in Tuesday's Wall Street Journal and a subsequent news conference on Capitol Hill, saying the military has "a good plan" for victory in Iraq, that progress is "visible and practical" and warning that such progress could be turned back by a premature withdrawal.

But the major media that played up Democratic Rep. John Murtha's call for withdrawing U.S. troops largely ignored Lieberman's remarks. Neither ABC nor CBS mentioned the senator in their nightly newscasts while NBC aired a short sound byte. And The Washington Post, New York Times, and USA Today ran not a word of Lieberman's praise for U.S. efforts in Iraq.

Blame Game

The four activists kidnapped by terrorists in Iraq are part of the anti-war group Christian Peacemaker Teams and you might think the organization is furious with their captors, but you'd be wrong. Instead, the peace group is blaming the U.S. and Britain for the abduction, saying, "We are angry because what has happened to our teammates is the result of the actions of the U.S. and U.K. governments due to the illegal attack on Iraq and the continuing occupation and oppression of its people."

The group's Web site reveals that it's a left-wing organization that has also stood with Palestinians against "Israeli occupation," and with illegal Mexican immigrants against harsh "U.S. immigration policy."

Who's that Soldier in the Uniform?

Liberal activists at MoveOn.org have yanked an anti-war ad blasting the administration for leaving U.S. troops in Iraq over the holidays after the Pentagon pointed out it used British soldiers to represent Americans in Iraq. The picture appeared as the ad's narrator says, "A hundred and fifty thousand American men and women are stuck in Iraq."

But a Pentagon spokesman tells Cybercast News that American men and women wear darker fatigues with a different pattern and don't have shorts as part of their combat uniforms. After trying to fix the error by doctoring the original photo to darken the uniforms and put long pants on the soldier in shorts MoveOn.org removed the ad from its Web site.

and that calls for some more fruit from the grapevine

Americans Say Big Business, Religion Too Powerful
"Most Americans think big companies and political action committees have too much power in Washington," according to the latest Harris poll, "while small businesses are seen by most as having too little influence."

"At the same time, more than a third of those polled feel religious groups have too much influence, up from 27% in 2000, while the percentage who feel racial minorities have too much power has fallen 10 percentage points to 28% this year."

Bush Pioneers Under Scrutiny
The Hotline notes that at least three Pioneers from the Bush 2004 campaign, who each raised more than $100,000, are ?currently under indictment or investigation in three separate scandals.? The list thus far includes lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Ohio GOP fundraiser Tom Noe and defense contractor Brent Wilkes.

Feinstein Loses Only Challenger
Bill Mundell (R), "the only Republican making serious preparations to challenge? Sen. Dianne Feinstein's (D-CA), said "he has decided not to run, leaving the GOP with no clear contender for one of California's top races for 2006,? reports the Los Angeles Times. Mundell?s decision ?reflects the difficulty Republicans face in finding a strong candidate to challenge the popular Democratic incumbent.?

Men of the Wheel
"Want to know the secret to success in Washington? Get a job chauffeuring Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell (R-KY) around," The Hill reports.

"Former McConnell drivers have an uncanny record of going on to bigger things here or in Kentucky politics. McConnell?s chief of staff and the chiefs of staff of Kentucky Republican Reps. Anne Northup and Hal Rogers spent time behind the wheel for the senator earlier in their careers. In fact, at one time, former drivers held every chief-of-staff job in the Kentucky Republican delegation."

GOP Leader Says Pirro Should Drop Out
New York State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno (R) said that Jeanine Pirro (R) should "reconsider" her 2006 challenge to Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and instead run for attorney general, according to the Albany Times Union.

Pirro?s Senate campaign has ?failed to pick up steam despite the fact that her closest competitor for the GOP line, Manhattan attorney Edward Cox, left the race in October. Pirro is lagging far behind Clinton in fund-raising, with only $363,920 on hand, according to the most recent filing with the Federal Election Commission, compared to the senator's $13.8 million.?

Rumsfeld Seeks Word Change
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld "has decided to avoid using the word 'insurgent' to describe the Iraqis fighting US and Iraqi forces in Iraq," AFP reports. He said "the switch was the result of 'an epiphany' he had over the weekend."

Said Rumsfeld: "I thought to myself, 'You know, that gives them greater legitimacy than they seem to merit."

Of course, Webster's New International Dictionary "defines 'insurgency' as 'a condition of revolt against a legitimate government, not reaching the proportions of an organized revolutionary government, and not recognized as a belligerency.'"

Reuters has more on the story.

Death Squads Roaming Iraq
"Shiite Muslim militia members have infiltrated Iraq's police force and are carrying out sectarian killings under the color of law," the Los Angeles Times reports. "The abuses raise the specter of organized retaliation to attacks by Sunni-led insurgents that have killed thousands of Shiites, who endured decades of subjugation under Saddam Hussein."

"And they undermine the U.S. effort to stabilize the nation, and train and equip Iraq's security forces -- the Bush administration's key prerequisites for the eventual withdrawal of American troops."

The Iraq Interior Ministry's inspector general "concurs that extrajudicial killings are being carried out by ministry forces."

Of course, Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT), just back from Iraq, writes in the Wall Street Journal that the conflict is much simpler: "It is a war between 27 million and 10,000; 27 million Iraqis who want to live lives of freedom, opportunity and prosperity and roughly 10,000 terrorists who are either Saddam revanchists, Iraqi Islamic extremists or al Qaeda foreign fighters who know their wretched causes will be set back if Iraq becomes free and modern."

No mention of death squads.

I like that much better MC thank you--When I have time will go through more but on 1st one--

"At the same time, more than a third of those polled feel religious groups have too much influence, up from 27% in 2000"

Hmm Wonder why author of article didn't include fact that 53% (over half) in "same poll" thought religious groups have TOO LITTLE influence--evidently your author didn't think that noteworthy--this one fall into the half truth catagory ;)

For those wishing to see all sides of poll--

The public continues to be deeply concerned about the influence that power and money can buy in Washington. Very large majorities of the public believe that big companies (80%), political action committees (PACs) which give money to candidates (78%), the news media (72%), and political lobbyists (69%) all have too much power and influence in Washington.

Equally large majorities of the public also believe that small business (88%) and public opinion (69%) have too little power and influence in the nation?s capital. Many people seem to feel that the public?s interest loses out to rich and powerful special interests.

A more modest 59% majority believes that racial minorities have too little power and influence. Also, a 53% majority feels that churches and religious organizations have too little influence. Conversely, a majority (54% to 29%) believes that TV and radio talk shows have too much political clout.

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll?, a nationwide study conducted by Harris Interactive? of 1,010 adults surveyed by telephone between February 12 and 16, 2003.

There are two institutions where there is no majority view. A 45% to 37% plurality believes labor unions have too much power and influence. And a 48% to 33% plurality believes opinion polls have too little power and influence.
