Our generation won't have SS...but it's not due to the robber barrons getting all the $$$. The system, plain and simple is now grossly unproperly funded. 50 yrs ago, 6 people paid into 1 person's social security. Right now, the ratio is only a little above 3 to 1. Some say that raising the age to receive SS is one solution...a good idea since the life expectancy has gone up in the past 50 yrs. However, still a band-aid to the situation. I used to think private investing was the solution...but I'd say about 5% of the people would actually know what to do with the money. In Galveston, TX, they went off of SS, and the money was invested in MM and bond accounts. Their growth was 50-200%...Many actually lived better off of SS than they did with their job....I can find the information somewhere on the web I'm sure.

hogman 14, actualy at one time it was 300 to 1 that funded it for the one retired. Soon they expaned it to let others in that at first were not allowed. Then they borrowed form it over 60 years around 7 to 8 trillion dollars. In other words it could still be healhy. Have at least 50 years left in it. That would allowe planing for a system to meat the needs starting in 2050. But greed and spending by our elected officials screwed it up. Things like if you were a married couple and you had kids and you died at young age say 35. Your 4 & 5 year old would get SS money till they were 18. Why?

Hmmm.....
Yeah, this whole Greenspan thing I really think was just used as an example about how the government has been spending money like nobody's business, and...hate to say it...really there is no check & balance anymore....As much as I really didn't enjoy Clinton's presidency, it was the Republican House and Senate that kept him in check...Enter G. W. who is spending money like a kid at a candy store....and I understand that a lot of this money was necessary....but all the pork must go...I think few people realize how much the fed spends on junk. They are, in fact, the largest contributor to the nation's economy. Ever see that commercial with that guy Matt Lesko...the really geeky looking guy who says "Get a government grant to mine for gold," or "Let the government pay for you to teach pig latin?" That's the real pork that we should be concerned about. Many on the left will always bring up the 87b. W. used for Iraq....trust me, have an argue w/a liberal about his spending, and this will be brought up. Then though....show them their/your pay stub. Show them their GROSS and NET pay...I know this is all very elementary, but it's an example to show how much the gov't takes out...then ask them if they want less $$$ in their pockets...

OK, that started to just ramble on towards the end, but I think i got my pt. across....
