As if things aren't unsteady enough right now...this happens last night....

I was home watching the Tarheels get smacked around. At halftime, Samantha went to the grocery store, i stayed home of course. About 30 minutes later, she calls me with some urgency in her voice, she tells me to come down to the car asap. I didn't ask questions...just sprung up and went. When i got there, I found her beside an elderly gentleman who had fallen. We live on the third floor of our apartment building and he lives on the bottom floor. He was beside his car. This gentleman is a former minister in his 70s. As I quickly took stock of the situation, I called 911. I noticed that he had a very bad head wound, just above his right eye that was bleeding a good amount. He was sitting up and was concious, but was very disoriented. To the point of when I asked him how old he was....he didn't immediately answer and said, "about 74....hundred."

Anyways, I also noticed that he was completely naked. Samantha went upstairs to get him a robe. When she got back, I ran upstairs, while talking to 911, and got a towel for his head wound. I brought it back, and had Samantha sit with him and keep pressure on the wound. It seemed like forever, but the fire dept and paramedics finally got there. Surprisingly, they didn't really ask too many questions. They wanted to know where he lived and that's about it.

What i think happened is this...since it was 11pm, and he was naked outside beside his car, I think that he either was in some state of dimensia or had taken some meds that disoriented him. The only thing he had with him was his Bible. He fell because there is a curb to step down (about 8 inches), and I'm guessing he didn't take that into account and fell forward onto the concrete. Again, this is just my speculation.

We weren't told where they were taking him...but i called around just a bit ago and found where he's at. They told me which hospital and also told me that he's in intensive care. That's all we were able to be told though.

I won't disclose his name, but just keep this gentleman in your thoughts. He's a very nice man who's always on the go...and he's always been nice in passing. We've stopped and talked some here and there, but nothing substantial. When we found out he was in intensive care, it really stirred up something inside.

hope he's ok. Could be something as simple as a bladder infection. Amazingly, that can cause the elderly to become massively confused. I hope he doesn't have some kind of hemorrhage in his brain from the fall. Glad you could help him out.

He's lucky you two were there to help, could very well have saved the man's life. Good luck to you, that had to have been scary to experience.

Just visited "Father" at the hospital. He's doing well. It appears that he started taking a new med this past week and that didn't mix well with a current heart med that he takes.

After talking to him in the ICU for a little while, this is what we learned. He's from a family of 9....but he's the lone remaining member. He had a brother die in '76 and the rest died in the 80s and 90s. So he's been kinda alone now for double digit years. He spends a lot of his time at the local parrish, helping out. He's 79.

it sounds like he'll be at the hospital for a few more days, being monitored. He did have a little bleeding in his head, and that's the reason he's in ICU. He'll be released from ICU tomorrow and be kept in a regular room for a couple days after that, just to be safe. Unfortunately for him, it sounds like an assisted living home is in his near future. He mentioned that himself....and when talking to the nurse, the nurse mentioned it too. It's sad because I know how much he likes being on the go....but it sounds like he's been going downhill a little bit (his own words) over the past little while. So an assisted living home is probably the right move for him.

Anyways, just thought I'd share. He now has phone numbers to contact us, if need be. you can't ever have enough friends

If there was an internal bleed you and Samantha may very well have saved that man's life.

Regarding his holding the Bible while naked, it is odd the way the brain works during trauma for the elderly. During my grandfather's last weeks he would swat at the nurses, constantly pull his clothes off, and use words that would make a sailor blush. However occasionally he would look up at me and tell me something that happened twenty years ago (he raised me for most part) with perfect clarity.

The power of attorney of the Father called tonight. She wanted to know what we knew, since we were the ones there that helped out. Apparently, he's taken a bit of a turn for the worse and is a bit more incoherant today. He's going to be kept in ICU now for a few more days for monitoring purposes. We'll probably go and visit him again tomorrow. I'll keep everyone posted
