Hudson Valley area.....NY
A wrote about this here many years ago..

On Sept 5th 1997 I was channel surfing on my TV when I hit the channel EWN... it is the catholic network channel....other then me watching their mass in Latin[ was an alter boy and still know all my Latin prayers} and sometimes listening to that nun in her brown habit I never watch the channel....
But there was Mother Teresa as a guest on a talk show....so i stopped surfing and started to listen to her...she was answering phone calls from people calling in the NY area...one person called and asked how he can help.."where to send money or a check". And in her broken English she said" where do you work in NYC". He said wall street..she then told him they didn't need money but we need you to be volunteer at a soup kitchen and she named a few in his area.. After several other calls she wasn't asking for money but for people to volunteer...never once did she say we need money for the poor of Calcutt,etc...she talked about how the world would be better if all people helped..I was stunned....after watching the 700 club, thousands of preachers on TV with their telephone numbers on the bottom of their screens asking for money for your repentance and many other things...so many are fake and millionaires...none of them like Billy Graham who is one of the few honest preachers that never lived in luxury.
I listened to her for the 1st time in my life..because I was one of those that watched SNL and watched all the spoofs of Mother Teresa dancing and doing cartwheels...she was more of a joke in my eyes...think Gilda Radnor played her...not sure....
So I was moved by Mother T....once the show was over the TV announcer said " we lost a great person today.. It was Sept 5th and she had died that day..the show was a rerun honoring her...of course I'm driving home from school listening to WFAN sports talk and never heard she had passed away...later on that night Mother Teresa was the big news on all the media...

I heard today Pope Francis is going to canonize her a saint...being a catholic I know you have to perform a few miracles to become a saint...verifying these miracles is really ridiculous in my mind...no diss intended to my religion...
But I did buy a book about her and read it...amazing what she did in the streets of Calcutta...she did get the nobel prize a few years back....
I think she really doesn't need to be canonized..she is already a saint in my mind...just watching her for those 30 minutes on the TV show way back made me a better person...that to me is the real miracle.

on another note..haven't been to a movie in so long..went the other night to see " Spotlight"...unreal..great movie....if you were brought up a catholic its a must see...the ending credits are so powerful...don't want to spoil it..think Rotten Tomatoes rated it pretty high...

good stuff Box, thanks for the info! Not many Mother Teresa's in the world these days, or maybe there are and we just don't hear about it. Great advice from her, we can all give the time to help others. Take a few hours and help at the soup kitchen or the homeless shelter and you never know who's day you'll brighten. When I look back in my life I could easily be the one out there looking for a warm meal or a place to sleep.
