Really liked it....

Matt Damon plays astronaut Mark Watney, crews Botanist.

While on Mars his group is out getting specimens when a huge storm suddenly develops.

In the sudden howling Martian winds, Damon is struck by a flying piece of equipment and is suddenly gone....his biometric device is destroyed and he is presumed dead.

The crew and ship are in imminent peril and not seeing his life signs, they reluctantly take off for Earth.

After the storm passes, dusty, shaken-up and pierced with an antenna, Damon is alive.
The missions buildings and resources are available, but he has no communications.

The movie chronicles his struggles to survive till the next mission several years later.

Damon, inventories food, realizes he must grow potatoes on Mars, and ration, easier than it sounds?

Mission control realizes there have been changes at the supposedly life-less abandoned landing site.

The views and vistas of Mars are incredibly realistic.

Damon uses the rover to find the remains of a previously deployed probe to contact Earth.

Now what? See the movie, you won't be disappointed.

It is almost 2.5 hours, be prepared.

Very good movie, ending really cool.....:popcorn2

I thought it was good maybe average...6/10 at best.

For fucks sake they rescue him and have a 400+ day trip back to earth and the movie just ends ?

I was left wanting much more...As far as a space movie Gravity kills this.

Nolan's review

Nolan's review

Leering over my keyboard while attempting to write a movie review of ?The Martian,? one senses the same confusion upon gazing at the controls a spaceship.
One isn?t sure exactly which button to push or what lever to pull.
Undoubtedly, this big-budget science-fiction thriller is destined to become one of the year?s blockbuster mega-hits. That?s because it has simply too many things going for it ? an innovative film director, cool special effects, patriotic themes throughout, popular movie stars, and the requisite 3-D viewing experience, which is now imperative in attracting a younger generation of moviegoers with the collective attention span of a fidgety toddler posing for a baby photographer. But gadgetry doesn?t necessarily make ?The Martian? anywhere close to being a great, nor even a good film. Actually, it?s pretty mediocre. I?ve been on airplane rides that were more suspenseful. Anyone who?s booked a ticket on Spirit knows exactly what I?m talking about.

One persons very reasonable response to Nolan :

Nolan,
"I guess I don?t understand a critic?s job?I went into the movie with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised by a fun and entertaining movie.
I suspect most people will approach the movie in the same way?I found the disco music perversely funny. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the diverse group of NASA employees because in reality that is what we have today. I especially like the solution coming from the lowly engineer?ingenuity is everywhere if you tap into it.

I found little to dislike about the movie, it was factually very reasonable. I was amused by the Chinese connection?which I saw as a bit of a political statement but that?s ok because it was not drummed into your head.
Overall it was fun?I worry that you invested too critic and not enough relaxation in the film?but that?s you by nature.. you?re very intense with your writing which you pour your soul in?I can appreciate that.
Take a couple of bottles of good wine next time!"

"the bunker"
not much of a damon fan myself...but that`s me..

sounds very similar to so many other movies...tom hanks in "castaway"...redford in "all is lost".... Adrian brody in "wrecked" and james franco in "127 hours".... man in jeopardy schtick with a lost in space theme and high budget special effects...............matter of fact, sounds very similar to Sandra bullock in "gravity" and that was fairly recent.......

don`t always(usually) agree with Nolan but I think I`ll defer to him and take his advice here(doesn`t mean it isn`t solid escapist entertainment...different strokes).......

enjoy....

Solid 7.7 out of 10 for kickserv.

It looked like you were watching a movie that took place on Mars, top notch job done by the crew making "Mars" look like the characters were actually there.

Damon is a great actor, he nailed this performance.

And it is way way way better then that fake shit in Gravity, Gravity was laughable how far fetched it was. This movie is actually plausible and much better then that overhyped Gravity flick.
