Murray to have surgery, miss BCS title game

NORMAN, Okla.- Oklahoma Sooners running back DeMarco Murray will have surgery to repair a partial rupture of his left hamstring tendon and will not play in the FedEx BCS National Championship Game against the Florida Gators on Jan. 8.

Murray, the Sooners' second-leading rusher, was injured on the opening kickoff of the Big 12 championship game on Dec. 6. The Sooners initially believed Murray had suffered a bruise, but an MRI exam revealed the injury to be more serious. Surgery has been scheduled for Dec. 22, the university said.

The school said that according to head trainer Scott Anderson, it will be about five months before Murray is cleared to resume training.

Murray gained 1,002 yards rushing this season, just eight fewer than team rushing leader Chris Brown. He led the Sooners in all-purpose yards with 2,171, with 395 receiving yards and another 774 yards in kickoff returns, scoring 18 touchdowns.

"Obviously we're very disappointed for DeMarco," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "He has been an important part of our success this year and we will miss his contributions. DeMarco has had an incredible year. "

"With Chris Brown and Mossis Madu, we still have two very fine backs. Our team has a lot of confidence in their abilities."

Big loss considering he was 3rd in the NCAA in total yardage. OU will need everyone they can get when they take on Florida.

i am not up to their game but i don't think he was their leading rusher....

He was their second leading rusher by 9 yards and that was mainly due to the fact that it took him until about the last third of the season to get back to old form after coming off of a dislocated knee cap. He's by far their best pass catching RB and OU would split him out wide to try to get mismatches. Before the injury coaches were excited about being able to utilize his flexibility much like Reggie Bush (no I don't think he's as good as Bush was). The last few games he was starting to look like the old Murray. As far as skill players go, I would rank Murray behind Bradford and Gresham as the 3rd most important part of the offense.

Let's see Tebow finishes 3rd in Heisman which he deserved higher IMO, OU's best RB, Murray, is now out, and Florida is basically playing a home game... Sooners have yet to face a defense like Florida's defense... I LOVE THE GATORS -3!!!

OU's defense is beat up as well and unless Florida starts turning over the ball which they rarely did this season, the Gators should roll and give the SEC their 3rd straight title IMHO.
