Today in MWC Hoops (11-14-08)
Last Time Out: 0-0
Season Record: 0-0
MWC Record: 0-0
Another season, another opportunity to make some cash!
The 2007-08 season in the MWC featured coaching changes throughout
the conference. A total of 5 of them ? Reynolds at AFA, Miles at CSU,
Alford at UNM, Boylen at Utah, and Schroyer at WYO. It should have
been no surprise that 3 of the top 4 teams were BYU, UNLV, and
SDSU. Only TCU enters the 2008-09 season with a new coach, having
replaced the embattled and beleaguered Neal Dougherty with Jim
Christian.
A few top players in the league have moved on ? Plaisted of BYU,
Giddens of UNM, Anderson of AFA, Mad Dog from WYO, Bryant from
Utah among them. But there is plenty of talent back and here?s who I
see as the key players throughout the league.
Lee Cummard, BYU ? 2007-08 MWC Co-Player of the Year. A solid
player who benefitted from having a solid big man in Plaisted, Cummard
will have ample opportunity to demonstrate that he can be the man.
Wink Adams, UNLV ? I thought he was the best player in the MWC
last year and I think he?ll be the best this year. There isn?t a better
perimeter defender in the conference and he might be the best in the
nation. He plays bigger than his listed height of 6?; that?s because he
has no neck.
Brandon Ewing, WYO ? No more Brad Jones as his partner, this year
he adds Sean Ogirri, a transfer from Wichita State, as his backcourt
mate. Kid Dynamite will lead the league in scoring and free throw
attempts. He?ll also lead the league in minutes played. WYO is so
limited in the backcourt that he played 39 minutes in the Pokes first
exhibition game! I don?t think he?ll win MWC POY but make no mistake
about it; he is the league?s Most Valuable Player.
Luke Nevill, Utah ? the biggest of the big men, he returns for his 13th
and final year with the Utes. He has NBA skills but hasn?t shown any
heart. Boylen made some progress with him last year and it will be
interesting to see whether Nevill can make a bigger leap from decent to
dominating.
Kevin Langford, TCU ? Solid, strong, tough in the paint. He?ll have to
be. The Frogs look to be dreadful on paper and he will have to carry the
load.
Today?s Games
A total 6 games on the slate today. Sometimes its silly to bet on early
season games. But oftentimes, there are some tremendous values to
be had because the oddsmakers have to rely so much on last year?s
performances. College teams can change so dramatically from year to
year that the wise guys in Vegas will miss one badly every once in
awhile.
TCU (+10) vs. Western Michigan (at Charleston, SC) - A neutral court
game being played locally at 12:30PM. This one has all the makings of
a root canal without anesthetic. Western Michigan returns 3 starters
and 8 letter winners. They are picked to win the MAC West division.
The Frogs return Langford and are picked for the cellar of the MWC;
they?ve already dented 3 rims during practice layup drills. The Broncos
base colors are brown and gold, giving this game the makings of a
sordid Pokes-Frogs match-up. Take the Broncos and the under. The
Frogs couldn?t score in a Jenna Jameson video.
Cal State Bakersfield @ Wyoming (no line) ? The Roadrunners of CSU-
B are coming off an 8-21 year, their first at the D-1 level. Leave it to
Heath Schroyer to schedule such a powerhouse for his opener. WYO
did not look good in their exhibition vs. Colorado Mines. But they have a
huge advantage on the ?Runners who haven?t played any pre-season
exhibitions. If Kid Dynamite and company can avoid the falling Acme
safe, I like the Wile E. Coyo ?.ooops ?Pokes over the Roadrunners.
Montana @ Colorado State (-4) ? A return match-up from last season
when the Griz rolled the Rams by a score of 75-39. The Griz return two
really good players in Jordan Hasquet and Ryan Staudacher; they also
have a couple of transfers including Jack McGillis from Oregon State.
They are picked for 2nd in the Big Sky this season. CSU has a brand
new team this year with improved depth and athleticism. Guards
Marcus Walker and Willis Gardner lead the way and transfers Andy
Ogide (Ole Miss) and Harvey Perry (Washington) should bolster the
frontcourt alongside returnee Andre McFarland. Montana is a solid and
efficient half-court team. CSU has never lost a home opener since the
MWC was formed. You should never bet your own team but if you
must, take the Rams.
Southeast Missouri @ New Mexico (-23) ? The Lobos are starting to
load up with talent and its just a matter of time. They are tough in The
Pit early in the season but this game is one to avoid from a bettor?s
standpoint. The Lobos are young and Alford is trying to get them ready
for a road game at Creighton on Sunday afternoon. Lots of turmoil at
SEMS; they?re lucky to be fielding a team. Look for the Lobos to rain 3-
balls from all over. Look for the Lobos to win big but it won?t mean
anything if they don?t; they will most certainly have visions of Bluejays
dancing in their brains. Take the Lobos but keep it sane.
Western State @Air Force (no line) - These two teams met in an
exhibition game last year. The Mountaineers fell 73-49 which impressed
AFA coach Jeff Reynolds so much that he scheduled them for his
home opener. Western State is so bad that they were CSU?s last
regular season win ? a friggin 40-point margin. The Flyboys should roll
in Clune and the local pundits will relish a huge victory in the place
where college basketball was invented.
Long Beach State @ Brigham Young (-20) ? A possibly interesting
game. BYU is still solid with Cummard and Jonathan Tavernari on the
floor. But they are a team that relies on chemistry and a strong post
presence, neither of which might be there early. Big man Chris Miles
and G Jackson Emery will be looking to make an impact. The 49?ers
are now coached by Dan Monson, he of both Gonzaga and Minnesota.
They are a middle of the pack Big West team but with a coach like
Monson you might see a bit of an up-tick. Former CSU G Steph Gilling
plays for the 49?ers now. Last year the Cougies beat them by 40.
Since they?ve fallen off a bit, they should win by only about 30. Take
the Cougars.
