thanks g. I am a little partial to Alvarez in that I feel he gets very little respect for what he has accomplished at uw.

get a clue. you of all people should be putting tresseel right up there with carroll for the reasons mentioned to gjn: they have accomplished damn near the exact same thing.

Yes OSU has a NC and impressive record under Tressel. But no way has Tressel accomplished what Carroll has.

Carroll plays and wins on the road. Take a look at ALL the home games OSU plays and the joke of a schedule Tressel plays compared to USC the last 4 years combined. NO CONTEST!

Carrolll in the last 2 years opened USC season on the road against Auburn and V-Tech. Won @AU with a QB making 1st career start.

Carroll dominates opponents and if i recall, in 4 years NEVER has won a game by luck or fortunate plays. NEVER!

Don't get me wrong, Tressell is great coach but he has it easier than Carroll AND doesn't get the same results in the same fashion.

scott:

i couldnt give two fu.cks about who ohio state plays non-conference.

bottom line is does tressel step up in big games against elite opponents?

answer: an unequivocal yes.

all your shit about usc being young means nothing.

ohio state started two sophs this year at qb in their two big games.

dominated michigan.
dominated oklahoma state.

this is unchartered territory for me (arguing pro-osu stuff.) you know i dont like em.

but facts are facts. youre big on facts.

So. Cal
tressel has nowhere near the talent now than when he took over for cooper...that team was loaded with nfl talent....a cooper trait.

however cooper couldn't beat michigan or a bowl opponent....tressel can beat those two teams, ocassionally loses to teams he should beat and keep almost EVERY opponent in the game...no matter how bad they are.

on the other hand carroll has increased the talent level immensly...runs the program with nfl talent and coaches and makes amazing halftime adjustments......they win games on talent and in-game coaching adjustments....an amazing parlay.

I guess I slept through USC's domination of those powers from Corvallis, Palo Alto, and Westwood this year, not to mention real inspiring halves against Washington and Arizona. SHit, USC got dominated by Cal - that looks real good right now doesnt it.

And, I hate to tell you, they were DAMN fortunate to beat Cal and Stanford and beat VT thanks to a not even debateable bogus call.

Quick note... couldn't it be argued that with Cal outplaying usc this year that the Trojans were at the very least "fortunate" to come away with a victory

Cal AT Usc

Rushing Cal 157 yds...Usc 41 yds
Passing Cal 267 yds...Usc 164 yds
Cal lost THREE fumbles
Time of Possession (sp?) Cal 37:11 Usc 22:49

According to the "facts", coupled with it was a home game for Usc...Who "deserved" to win????

if i had my pick,i might just take meyer....right now.....i`m trying to look beyond the obvious choices of stoops and carroll....

looking at guys that are doing it without the benefit of a bluechip program....lots of guys could win at usc and oklahoma...

it`s a little scary to think what meyer will do at a big time program....recruiting absolute bluechip talent.....

i know i`ll get skewered..and he`s not in the above named group......but,navy`s coach paul johnson could be the best coach with minimal talent in the country...

look at what the guy did at georgia southern....

navy`s program was a sham before he came....now he`s got 2 commander in chief`s trophy`s...has navy bowling on a regular basis....with the option.......

the guy is a master at motivating kids.....

i said before,if nebraska had taken johnson, they`d be a power again...

he`s underrated due to the option.....didn`t seem to bother tom osborne...

send stoops and carroll down to the naval academy and let them win year in and year out......

winning at oklahoma and usc isn`t exactly a foreign concept...

now,i`m praying that the ravens make some overtures to norm chow to be offensive coordinator....

not holding my breath...

one thing i learned was comparing coaches is about impossible ... my best pal used to love denny crum and was always down on Dean Smith (whom I loved) ... As John Wooden used to say, "Even the Mona Lisa has its critics."

How good a coach was Red without Russell? Would PJ have been without MJ and Shaq? Course you need talent, but to subjectively guess which players are better and who will get the breaks (Tressel's NC is def. tainted) is coin flipping ...

Who's the best? WHO KNOWS :)

By the way you can have Terry Shea if you want him. Not too much love being thrown his way after his first year here in Chicago.

While anyone SHOULD win at OU weasel, I think folks forget just how far OU had fallen - Blake, Gibbs, Schnellenberger - hell if I am not mistaken OU hadnt even won a conference title for somehting like 12 years prior to Stoops national title run. Anybody remember OU losing to Nebraska something like 69-7 in 97 or 98?

not denegrating stoops.....obviously the real deal.....just trying to inject a little context into the discussssion.....

just saying that turning the navy program around in a year is akin to ....say,vandy winning the sec.......given the service commitment and the obvious lack of access to top recruits.....and the putrid state of the program when he arrived....

they were winless the year before he arrived.....and with that horrible talent, they went to a bowl game in his second year....

i`d say as impressive an accomplishment as any recently in ncaa football...

the guy wins everywhere he goes.....i`d be shocked if nobody goes after him in the next few years....despite the option....
