Sounds funny I know but I was taking the puppy for a walk today and he licked a bat.

We live downtown and he was snooping around every nook and corner of one of the buildings like he awlays does..

Anyway he walked up to what looked like a rock. When he licked it the damn thing spread its wings and made a terrible screeching sound... scared the living shit out of me (and the dog) What a dsigusting creature.. anyway I dont think it bit him but I cant be sure..

Can a dog get rabies just from simply licking it? Or only if it is bitten?

What should I do

Thanks

I'd say it would have to have bitten him, but it wouldn't hurt to call the pet hospital.

Crazy man, when I lived downtown I never saw bats. Was this around the Katy Trail?

From my limited understanding of bats, they use the guano for mascara and eye make-up...

At the very least take it by Sephora and see if you can make merchandise exchange for the special lady?

Found a bat on our back porch one time when I was a kid. Was just out there sweeping. It was all kind of curled up. Freaked me out too.

I'm not a vet, but chances are the bat didn't have rabies. And secondly, even if it did, it's not likely to give your dog rabies just from licking it. The vet likely gave the standard answer that they need to do tests, because if they said no you don't have rabies, and the dog ended up with rabies, you'd REALLY be mad then.

Good luck. Hope you find that bat and hope your dog is OK.

I think you need to chill out.

Would a dog get poisoned by licking a snake?
Myxomatosis from licking a rabbit?

I take it you've never contracted HIV from licking a...(oh wait! :mj07: ;) )

But seriously, your dog will be fine. He's got as much chance of getting rabies (or anything else) as by licking another dog/cat/domestic pet.

[Now if someone was swinging the bat he licked there'd be more to worry about! :D ]

depends on the breed of bat.....if it`s just a run-o-the-mill vampire or fruit bat,the dog should be just fine...

BUT....if it`s the dreaded west coast moonbat,i would get the dog to the vet pronto....

warning signs:

1)eyes bulging, spit flying ,foamy lower lip(at the mention of the words "bush" or "cheney")

2)extreme smugness...

3)if it comes back from a run in the yard with a birkenstock in it`s mouth...

4)acting overly emotional...

5)..ganja breath(i.e. hippie stink)...

/one little moonbat licked by gibber`s doggie
first?... ask madjackers,
then comes the media
soon to be featured on wikipedia....

My god lads this has turned into a bigger ordeal than i could have imagined.

Let me catch you up.

So I walk out of my apartment looking like a complete douche armed with my shoe box and dust pan.

I walk two blocks to the spot and there the disgusting thing is.. Still lying there lifeless. I figure it had to be dying or something to be laying out on the ground in the middle of the day..

I threw a few pebbles.. no movement

So going in a felt pretty confident. However as soon as the dust pan touched that phucker he came alive.. Wings flapping and an awful screeching sound.. scared the bejesus out of me but I kept going. Thats when this flying rat snapped out of it and flew off! I tried to swat it with the dust pan but to no avail.

He flew right by my shoulder and I immediately had that feeling like it was in my hair.. you know that feeling like bugs are crawling all over you..

So there I am squirming around like an idiot with a dust pan and a shoe box in the middle of the sidewalk before i remembered I was in the middle of downtown in rush hour.

People were staring. It was not my coolest moment.
