I don't know what to say.... Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers. It really means a lot to me. My Papa Dock would have been 86 this week on the 26th. He was a man of few words...who loved to be outside in nature. He could do almost anything with his hands.... He built every house that he and my grandmother ever lived in...and did almost all of the work himself from the electrical to the plumbing. He wasn't an educated man, as we think of education today, but most of us could take a lesson or two from the knowledge that he bestowed upon his family and friends.... He was a man that led by example. He lived a long and happy life. He was out working in his yard on Monday...put bedrails on his truck on Tuesday and walked two miles on Wednesday before passing on Thursday. Active up until the very end and he wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
Honestly, Beantown actually had it right.... It would have really bothered him and the rest of the family if he would have had some prolonged illness. He went the way that he would have wanted to go...quickly and without too much pain. He was the kind of man that would have been bothered if he would have had to have someone take care of him in some hospice, etc.
A special thanks to Anthony for the beautiful flowers.... They were taken to the cemetary along with a few others and placed at his gravesite. I have to tell the story that I left on your voice mail, Anthony. I hope that it's okay with you.
I got to the funeral home for early viewing with just the family (friends came at 5:00) on Saturday and my mother comes over with a smile on her face.... I inquired as to why. She said that when she got there, my grandmother (who had been married to my Papa Dock for 59 years) approached her and said, "Who is Dr. Strangelove?" My mother said, "What? Who?" My grandmother said that there were some flowers from "Dr. Strangelove and MadJack Sports...." Mom, having seen the website and the t-shirts, simply said, "Oh, that would be from Chad's gambling buddies." They each chuckled a little, which was very much needed and appreciated during this difficult time. My mother, knowing that I have not met many of you in person, said, "That group of guys that you talk to on the internet is really a special group of people."
I explained to my grandmother later that I had never met most of you in person, but that we were like a family and had known each other for 5 years or more in most cases...that we helped each other through the good times and the bad...laughed, celebrated and cried together...even fought like we were family at times. She told me that's what "family" was for and said that she wanted me to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers...and for being such good friends to me.
It has been a rough few days and I know that it will only get better with time.... I took off work today to work in my yard and to be out in nature, as he loved to be.
Thanks again from the bottom of my heart for all of the prayers and well wishes.... The family was so strong yesterday, especially my grandmother. The power of prayer is a wonderful thing...and I know that some of the thoughts and prayers from the fine people at this site actually made a difference. I assume that she was trying to be strong for her family, but I know that it will hit her hard in the days, weeks and months to come. My mother and her sister are going to stay with my grandmother for this coming week, so if you guys could keep her and her two daughters in your thoughts and prayers, it would mean a lot to me.
Papa Dock, I miss you...and I love you. Rest in Peace. :sadwave:
