my fishing tournament in Mexico

Pictures are forthcoming but that being said, this is the best trip I have ever been on and I have been on a lot. Anyone that knows me also knows that I tournament fish in several BASS and FLW tournaments and make a decent buck doing some years, horrible others, great once in a while. this trip was different. The top twelve qualifiers from the state of Texas against top twelve from Mexico and those twelve fish as a team and there is a team winner and an individual winner it is a two day tournament and Team Texas won by more than 70 pounds as we absolutely strummed them. I weighed in 88.87lbs for two day, ten fish total allowed, five a day. The reason I am posting this is that this is a little lake that is only thirty miles from the border of Roma Texas and if anybody that knows me wants to go catch the fish of a friggin lifetime this is the place to go. On practice day we saw maybe ten boats. rooms are nice and all inclusive at $70 bucks a day. Best time I have ever had fishing. Damn near every cast is a giant. I only have these three pics that myself and two buddies took on practice day. My other friend took a shitload of them just hasn't sent them yet so here they are. These all weighed in either over ten the heaviest being 11.85.

The best one is the top one and I know they are small but if you look closely enough you can see that my friend is dripping wet because when he went to lip the fish the lure came out of its mouth and he wouldn't let go and he, the fish, and his fishing rod all went into the water. He saved all three.

IMO this is where we have the next outing. I will be going back in four weeks and again over Christmas and again in January during the spawn when the big girls come out to play!!!!!!

FDC, what do you guys use for bait down there? Shiners? I suppose you have to use all artificial lures in a tournament.. I was just thinking about going bass fishing down south this winter to get away form the 20 below.. Is there a season down there or a time when you can't go bass fishing in the winter?? I was thinking Florida but now I am definitely thinking Texas... One more question.. Is there a place down there where I can get supplied.. I would fly and would not bring my own rods.. Just lures..

I would hook you up brother no worries. I was using a plastic lure that is called an Iguana its a 12" lizard about an inch in circumference and a 7/0 Extra wide gap Gamakatsu hook on 20lb fluorocarbon. The lake to go to is Sugar lake in Mexico and the spawn generally starts in January. No live bait allowed or available actually. If you want to stay in the states then just go to Lake Fork in Emory Tx. I am going back to Mexico on the 26th of December and it is about a nine hour drive. You need a passport and a Mexican fishing license ($50) and a shitload of beer and water. I would also consider Lake Falcon and Choke Canyon that are on this side of the border but much bigger lakes. Get my email from Jack and leave that Viking shit at home, wear a Bears visor and I will take you anywhere you want to go. I would suggest you get a passport and a couple of decent receivers:00hour

Great sounds good.. We use a 5 inch sinking minnow from Gulp and use it wacky style but that is probably too small a bait for down there.. I am not much for driving 9 hours but wouldn't mind fishing in Texas.. I 'll wear a Dallas Stars hat.. Were you just talking shit about the Viking receivers and who plays for the Bears?:shrug:

Oh yeah dude you can't take me too seriously on much of anything except football and fishing but I was just having fun with you. The nine hours isn't all bad but you have to have two drivers cuz you drive all night to get there at daybreak and fish all that day and you are absolutely wiped out but let me ask you this, when you are catching anywhere from 23- 43 black bass a day and none smaller than 5 lbs which is absolutely the case.............how does that measly 9 hour drive sound now. And its $70 bucks a night per man all inclusive with good food and good beer. 9 hours ain't shit. I am not kidding you bro, you will talk about this trip and go back every year for the rest of your life. It is amazing. Like nothing I have ever fished in my life...............and I fish A LOT!!!!

start saving and I promise you will catch a ten pounder or I will wear a Vikings visor for a whole day!!!! If you do though, it's a Bears visor for you for a day................deal?

SOunds ten times beter than my trip to Canada!

I have great success on Small and Largemouth, with Chatter baits, as well as Northern,and Walleye (although the Walleye are a little tougher)

The Chatter are tipped with items like this, I find this tail design to be the absolute best:

Awesome thread. Thanks for posting. I do a lot of walleye fishing up here but I always enjoy watching the bass fishing tournaments on TV. It looks/sounds like you guys had a blast.

The plastic baits of today are tough to beat. We have had great success with Gulp minnow grubs and Gulp leeches.

Judge, I remember you posting those pics a while back but never get tired of looking at them. Sweet Peacocks!

I will be going back during the holidays December 26th or so through the 31st and then back again in January mid to late and once again in February. The trip itself with gas and all for five days of fishing would be in the area of $550 and we would take my boat and truck. I would be willing to send you a standby ticket on American and you could fly into DFW or what ever as I pass through Austin and San Antonio on the way there just let me know when you want to go. The December trip, in my opinion, would be best because the fish will all be prespawn and feeding like hell and the fattest they will get. Let me know.
