Not that it means anything or anyone gives a shat, but wanted to try to give an objective view of Pete Carroll.

On the one hand:
You have a guy that has proven to be one of the greatest "big game" coaches of all time. Outside of the loss to Texas, this guy always has his team ready to play their bowl game. Also, out of conference, he has been magnificent over the years. When he has gone to SEC country early in the year, he has taken freaking names. Shutout at Auburn, rolling up 50 on Arkansas the year Arkansas went to the SEC championship game, just overall very impressive.

On the other hand:
Absolutely pathetic and indefensible losses at home to Stanford last year, to a Cal team a few years ago at home, with a chance to play for the NC against UCLA two years ago, and then last night against Oregon St. ALL OF THOSE LOSSES ARE ON PC. He did not have his team ready to play every game, and that is what it takes to win it all. They have more talent than any team in the country and that loss last night is pathetic.

So, USC fans, don't give me that Carroll is the best in the country any more, because if he is the best, he would have his team ready to play every time they take the field, period.

Have fun playing for another Rose Bowl PC, perhaps you can win the Dunkel NC and someone will give you credit for another meaningless NC:142smilie

skipper...

unless there are going to be a few unbeaten teams, usc still has a chance to make it to the championship game if usc runs the table...history has shown that it is better to get a loss in the beginning of the season than later in the season..

Certainly agree with you on backing in to the NC. I will also say this, if given the opportunity, I would probably play USC if that happens unless they were to play Florida, in which case I would take Urban Meyer.

Good to debate, and if you fellow madjackers are bored this afternoon, tune into 1180espn.com this afternoon from 4-6 eastern time. That is my radio show and would love to hear from you. Spang and Gman have called in the past. We have a good time

So. Cal
maybe the teams in the pac-10 conf are actually pretty good

or

maybe, like every other "tough" conference, it's just hard to win on the road in the pac-10

or

maybe the teams in the conf know how to play sc and arent as intimidated as non conf teams

however you want to slice it, it's been happening for years.....conf teams play sc closer than sc's non conf opponents (which usually include top notch opponents).

i'd have a hard time blaming carrol for his 8 losses in 6 years and saying he's at fault....ignoring his 65-70 wins or so.

Agree that the Pac - 10 is tougher than a lot of people give credit to. It's not the best conference by any means but its not complete cupcakes.

USC still has a shot for the title game because there's only going to be one undefeated team in college football this year imo and it will be either BYU or Utah. Oklahoma has an outside chance and the SEC boys beat each other up and Florida and Georgias schedules are tought. Not sure what that means in the grand scheme of things, but I can assure you that if USC wins out they will be in the debate to play in the title game.

Kind of agree about Carrol to a point. Any program in the country would about fire their coach immediately to get him except maybe Florida. The ND's of the world and the Tennessees would fire their fat men for him in a second. He's a GREAT 2h coach making adjustments and whatnot, but his teams generally play flat in the 1h and that's his fault.

We'll see how it all shapes out, but personally I think there are going to be a bunch of 1 loss teams georgia/florida/oklahoma/usc and a zero loss mountain west team and then everyone can piss and moan about there not being a playoff again. Happens every year.

Pete's the best overall coach in the NCAA and I don't think it's close.
I would have to agree that Pete is the best but as far as it "not being close", in their only head to head meeting Carroll was clearly outcoached by Mack Brown.

The only team in the nation to record at least 10 wins for seven consecutive years, Brown's squad has been the best in the country during the first decade of the 21st century. In that time, his Longhorns have won six of seven bowl games, including four straight for the first time in school history, and have recorded at least 11 victories on four occasions and have finished in the nation's Top Six four times since 2000 in addition to finishing in the Top 10 in five of the last seven seasons. Texas is also the only team in the country to post at least nine victories in each of the last 10 seasons.

Ouch...Mack Brown? That's gotta hurt the USC fans!!

Honestly, Vince Young won that game. Not Carroll losing it, nor Brown winning it.

This quote from Wikipedia says it all:
A [4th quarter] Texas timeout stopped the clock with 2:13 to play. Then, in what may have proved to be the most pivotal coaching decision of the game, Trojans coach Pete Carroll elected to give his number-two ranked offense (ranked behind only Texas), which had averaged 582.2 yards and 50.0 points per game on the year, an opportunity to convert a fourth down-and-two at the Texas 45-yard line. However, due to pre-snap adjustments by the Texas defense, who had failed to stop this same play three times all leading to USC touchdowns, caused White to only gain slightly more than one yard, and Southern California turned the ball over at the Longhorns' 44-yard line with 2:09 to play in the game.
I think we all remember what happened next. ;)

Heads up: Losing to Oregon State in Corvallis is not what you are making it out to be.

The Beavers might not be ranked, but they have won 4 straight bowl games, if I'm not mistaken.

As someone already pointed out, teams in your conference have seen you before and aren't quite as impressed when you show up.

OSU has played USC tough the last few years so that coaching staff has a beat on them.

I'd put USC as a favorite against any team in the country, despite this loss.

its the nature of college football, any team on certain days can BEAT any team.

tidbit: usc is 10-5 in conference last 15 games.

oregon st. manhandled USC on both sides of the line, like no other team has including Texas.

Any thoughts on Urban Meyer? He just shit the bed AT HOME against a team that had 3 wins last year (Northwestern St, LA Tech, Memphis). He shit the bed against Michigan in the bowl game last year.

My point is that you can't judge a coach on a couple of losses (no matter who they are to). Look at the overall picture and that should tell you that USC is the premier program and Florida is right behind them.
